What's the problem? People build railways in minecraft too, and that game has survival mechanics and it's fun.
Let me try to explain why this is absurd:
Minecraft is a building game. It's a game were people build things because its fun.
Minecraft has a survival mode. Survival mode is so people who enjoy building things because they find it fun can also play a survival game, which they also find to be fun. If people who don't find survival games fun, but do enjoy building things, they can play in creative mode.
Naturally, rail enthusiasts will build rails. So will people who enjoy experimenting with the game's mechanics. They don't build rail systems because it's a faster mode of travel. Rails take much longer to build than the time saved by using them. It's the building that makes them fun.
Star Citizen is aspiring to be the best darn space game ever. Which doesn't have orbital mechanics, properly scaled planets, a proper flight model, or very many game loops. But it does have
completely unnecessary commutes which will only be done
once by most players, and survival mechanics which lack the
supporting game mechanics that make survival games fun to play.
