Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

What do SC'ers who have kids tell their kids about SC? Does it sound like "Oh, you like that ship you're looking at a pic of? That's where your college fund got spent."?
Lol. 2x45€ to play with my son.
And your "college fund" reference is just something weird for me, I live in Europe where we don't ruin our children's future with insane costs for college.

Whereas I knew Roberts' track record meant there was no way in hell I was backing it until it came close to release.

Given how much has gone in to the game, how little has been delivered and how many shell companies exist, I would now only buy in if the Roberts name was completely divorced from it, and absolute £0 went towards Sandi's handbag fund.
Same here. Knowing his record I've stayed clear, and am pleased I have.

If a good game is finally delivered (and I sincerely hope one is) then I may buy it (assuming I'm still alive by then), but I'm not throwing good money into someone's lifestyle fund.

Interesting to hear two long-term YTers discuss the hype cycle vs the delivery cycle. And how they've noticed a big gap between the two

TLDR: Morph says he's now 'learning from the past' on deliveries and expectations. Has over-hyped things in the past, to himself and others. (He's still very hyped about the nav mesh addition though ). Is playing Witcher 3 for fun.

Some highlights:

  • They laugh about $500m but still no finished game... [25m30s]
  • Revisit the low expectations of gameplay loops anytime soon, due to SQ42 focus etc. [33m20s]
  • They both make some noise about derelicts being left until now. (And the excited vids they made at the time regarding future plans and concepts. "What happened to that stuff?". Morph is bothered by that.) [35m50s]
  • Morph v sceptical about what gameplay the cargo refactor will bring. Has expectations down at 'How well have carts worked?' level. IE try and use the feature and die... [39m25s]
  • Tomato says the thing that holds him back from being 'all about' upcoming SC future features, is the way no big feature comes fully formed. Cargo refactor just another 'T0' etc. And there's no comparable deep dives or detail on the big picture stuff (Server Meshing etc). Morph feels he over inflated hype in past, and he over hyped himself too. Is now looking at trends in past for T0 etc. And setting expectations accordingly. [39m47s]
  • Morph says CIG told him the reason Idris isn't in game is because they don't want to spoil it (which he doesn't believe), and because the Idris for SQ42 is a 'bespoke Idris' which has different internals than one for PU - set up for set pieces, and just for the NPCs use etc, and needing work on flight model, turrets etc (which he does believe). [47m45s]
  • What is Morph actually looking forward to? Nav mesh tech apparently, and has been for years. (Oh dear...). Think it will be a transformative, tangible change, because thinks will add both ship entry for NPCs, as well as the terrain navigation. (Thinks it all makes sense for SQ42 use too, so should come...). And will add fauna. Yetis. Will make the world live. (He's hyping himself up again ;)). He's sensibly less excited about T0 Salvage ;). [51m]
  • Thinks nav mesh doesn't have loads of other tech dependencies (like cargo refactor...), so should work out of the box. He thinks, from his experience toying with a basic nav mesh... (which isn't really the same as the CIG generated ones, but no worries...). And also they showed it off in a vid! So it's bound to work and arrive in a more complete state... [58m56s]
  • Isn't taking a break from SC videos. But does intend to play other games to relax. He's playing Witcher, which has hardly any bugs and he's loving it. Might do vids on Space Engineers. (Talks about how when can't even do a simple, gameplay-free, video tours in SC, due to falling through elevators etc, def wants to quit).
    [1h1m00s]
  • They get lost falling in love with the Banu Merchantman for a bit... [1h4m or something]
  • Imagining a live / complete version of SC, 15 years down the line, what does he want to do? Wants a fleet to push to New Armitage, Battlestar Galactica style. And the solitary experience, with a hut full of cool and exotic things on a distant desert world. [1h07m15s]

Bonus Prediction:

Found a great prediction in the comments from a particularly Blobers-esque YT regular:

I think they want 42 out by the end of the year, but at the same time have the PU ready for players who have played 42 to progress to. That means 6 systems, 100 player cap, quanta working, cargo refactor working, meshing working, scanning, salvage, repair, Planetary AI, procedural content, fire, and missions, Gen 12, Vulcan, Habs, Hangers, the BMM, Hull series, and possibly the Orion, as well as the Idris and the Javelin. That's a crap ton of work, so I imagine everything is a little frantic and scattered atm, but we know they have all the tech working in house, it's just a question of implementation and time. In another year we will be looking at a viable product and 42, even if they have given wider margins for their goals, I think that's what they're aiming for

Ohhhh dear...
