I mainly want Odyssey for FC interiors, and maybe the on foot exploration. Is it worth it for those 2 things? I will not be doing any FPS missions.

Thank you everyone. I will watch the forum and YouTube after the update and see how it goes. I can enjoy some FPS, I just like to fly more. I am Triple Elite, a King and an Admiral, I have a FC and an elite crew member, and I am hoping that the FC interiors, the new lighting, some on foot stuff and such will add some more spark to ED for me.
As a triple elite, king, admiral I suspect that EDO would add some welcome variety to the game. Some more ranks to go for if nothing else...

Firstly, wait for the release of the update to see what it actually brings to the table and how stable the entire thing is. FDev have had a lot of issues with quality control of their content patches.

Secondly, wait for a sale. I think I saw Elite and Odyssey on sale over at humblebundle, but not sure if the sale is still up. Frankly, I wouldn't pay more than 15€ for Odyssey at the moment (stupid me pre-ordered and paid even more to participate in the pointless Alpha 🤦‍♂️)
I'd agree with this on all points (and I'm saying this as a "premium" "Alpha" victim as well - I regret having opted for that even now still).

And will add that it also depends to quite a large part how beefy your PC is, and what performance you're used to in Horizons. You will experience a very noticeable degradation if you're not on cutting edge hardware, and on top of that various visual "quirks" and glitches (especially around shadows and lighting). Also, many paintjobs still look quite different in EDO compared to EDH, others are still downright broken. So if you're heavily invested in cosmetics this might be an additional source of frustration.

Edited for clarity

I'm also hoping for that long overdue new anti-aliasing system that they implied would arrive last year.

The Merc/ exobiology ranks are fine ( I have no interest) . I've been triple for 3 years and still play so can't really understand the thinking behind the prestige elite ranks at all . But again that's my small opinion 😃

I do not care for FPS games so would likely never even try most of the new mission content.

But I did see where you can fly to planets/moons and scan plants for their info or whatever so I might try that.

Other than that I would just be walking around in my FC, flying around outside my FC, going to a hazres here and there, and other Horizons type stuff.

Do you think that only wanting to have a FC interior is worth the price of Odyssey?

Also, is the UI basically the same as in Horizons or is everything different besides retaining ranks, reputation, and assets?

I hope everything is retained.
Thank you.
Yes. The planets can be really pretty and i would say its worth it. You even get a new SRV thar is better for exploration as it can climb steeper surfaces and handles much better in low G, it can sctually turn and not just slide around everywhere.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Odyssey if all your doing is plant scanning and walking around your fleet carrier. I've really enjoyed heading to colonia and stopping at every planet with 2 or more Biologicals on them. The commander in question is still 13,000 ly from the Colonia but I've found the new planets to be interesting (now that the frame rate is acceptable), I haven't seen the duplicate tiles which other explorers have reported and some of the sunsets/ sunrises on these planets have been breath-taking.

The gameplay itself is a little simplistic (eg, the exploration heat map is a little lacking and I would love to be able to do something extra with the plants , like mine them for mats) but when playing this way, Elite does have a laid back, relaxing feel to this game mode. There is a thrill when scan a planet and find 8 Biologicals on it. I've only found 105 unique biologicals so far so there's still at least another 200 to go.

If you just want to walk inside your FC and on planets surface, why not. If you expect more, wait.

I would like to add that you should at least wait for FDev to add FCs interiors. I mean, they also said that AA should be done last year and it still isn't.
And there is also some degradation with stars lightning compared to Horizon.
The surfaces are not the same, so don't expect to retrieve an epic location.

Check your current performance under Horizon. Planet surfaces are REALLY performance hungry.

How does it handle in high G? I was doing a Covert Heist on a 2.5G world lately, and had to leave my old Scarab SRV behind, it could not climb even a 20 degree slope in those conditions. I had to climb out of the trench I was in using my jet pack lol.

It basically makes YOU play the actual pilot, rather than playing the ship. The shift in immersion is massive. Changes perspective a lot.

And there are some non-combat missions too on foot. I would say it's definitely worth it!

If you're into exploration, then IMO it absolutely will be worth it. For months leading up to Odyssey's release, I was dead set on pre-ordering Odyssey the moment FC interiors were announced. Sadly they never were at the time, but I did end up pre-ordering anyway 2 days before release so I could play around with it while recovering from some recently-acquired injuries. I believe I made several posts about my 1-handed SRV driving adventures back then. 😝

Ever since it was announced that Fleet Carriers would be personally ownable, my endgame goal for Elite has been to park my FC over my first earthlike world and use it as a base while I fully map the surrounding area of at least a 50ly radius. By the time I acquired my FC, Odyssey was only 6 months away, so I figured I'd wait for that before heading out.

Once Odyssey released, I did in fact take my FC out there, but it quickly it became apparent that a FC without Vista Genomics wasn't gonna cut it. Going for joyrides in the SRV is one of my favorite activities in Elite, and the only risk form doing that in Horizons was losing the SRV itself (which I why I always carry 4). But now, one SRV crash and all your biodata is gone, which I knew would be too great a risk to take for any serious long-term expedition. So I went back to the bubble and postponed my expedition, in the hopes that someday Fdev would get around to adding FC interiors with Vista Genomics as an optional service.

Lo and behold, we're now less than a week away from realizing that dream and I couldn't be more excited. Not only are we getting big things like Vista Genomics and viewable jumps, but we're also getting a bunch of smaller, understated features that'll truly make the FC feel like a home base out in the void. I can't wait to come home after a long day of exploring, turn in my biodata, and have a drink with my actual carrier crew in the bar. Or just chill in my ready room, overlooking that beautiful, pristine earthlike world out the window.

It's the quandary I'm in and Frontier don't seem to be selling EDO to me , it's like they expect us to just buy it.

An expansion for an existing game is very much that sort of thing, in general the existing player base upgrades to the new version, players coming into the game usually just buy the entire lot as a package. Of course a bad explansion or one with a lot of bugs can often cause a break in that pattern, a delay in existing buyers upgrading, which is exactly what we are seeing at the moment.

Personally I don't like FPS games, my reflexes aren't as good as when I played Doom in the 1990s.

I have enjoyed the exobiology gameplay, and especially stealth missions - no shooting, but occasionally, just occasionally, some scavengers have come to a deserted base I'm at; I can run away, discretion is the better part of valour. It's quite exciting, a kind of hide-and-seek.

The galaxy map UI took a bit of getting used to but I soon adapted and find it easier to use now than the old Horizons/Beyond one. Similar with Outfitting though I do miss being able to see the cost value of my modules, since some are identical in size/performance but cheaper due to discounts (hence lower ship rebuy).

Odyssey is quite unique in the way it also conincides with a substantial change to various other areas of the base game - performance, visuals (for good or bad), UI (again, for good or bad).

Whenever I buy a DLC for the various other games I own (some of which do have substantial iterations of them, like Cities Skyline or the truck sim games, X4, Assetto Corsa, just to name a few) they add content, maybe new mechanics, but they don't have the kind of technical impact Odyssey had on the base game. Thankfully FDev decided to hold off applying the new engine client on Horizons only players, I wonder what that would've done to the player numbers.

The scorpion is awesome in low G scarab is better in 0.75-1.25 G where scorp is better in low and high

Then again such a gaffe would have really forced them to actually optimise performance. I can't even remember the last time they mentioned merging clients.

Also, European/American Truck Simulator. 👍

Yeah, the fact it's not even pencilled into any roadmap (remember those??? AWOL as well) or mentioned elsewhere makes me wonder if it'll actually happen at all now.

SCS are a great developer - they test their software, regularly patch and improve it, and add quality DLCs at reasonable prices, and so far I can't remember a situation where an update caused any grief at all for me. Which in turn means they're pretty much guaranteed my money on day 1 each time.
