Newcomer / Intro New Old Guy

Welcome from another CMDr who's not as young as they used to be (51 for me).

Just returned myself after some time away, and it's nice to see a lot of the 'usual suspects' who welcomed me back in here, too.

The folks in this thread'll not steer you wrong CMDR.

Though tey might pull your leg a little, from time to time :D:cool:

Like free Anaconda's and wotnot?

I try not to pull anyone's legs as I know I'll get mine own pulled. And if THAT happened, they'd probably fall off. My earlier sporting life is making its presence felt :D

Heh, nothing quite so wicked! Pretty sure I've seen most folks in here warn of the perils of Hutton Orbital!

I meant more that those here assembled are a good humoured and often humerous bunch - I should probably just have said that :cool:

Like this :D

I think we all agree that free Anaconda from Hutton Orbital is for p u s s ies who are looking for shortcuts... We old bards like to spend hard earned cash on our ships...

Welcome to the game, Commander... Im 49, most of my hair moved to my back in my 30s and I started playing Elite in 90s... :)

Quake III pft, we were networking 2 PC's together using serial cables to play DOOM ( the original) in multiplayer lol!
Same here, my first PvP experience was two PC's connected directly via LAN cable, playing Doom or Quake, I don't really remember... Then Q3A came and I spent a lot of time doing rocket jumps to get to the most unusual vantage points sniping with rail gun, using grappling hook to suspend myself from weirdest places etc... That was fun... :)

Im fairly new to Ed and am 45ish, loving this game, Finally a game i can just chill in if i want and see the sights. I choose to keep my sittle sidewinder and bought an adder. Make just enough money to let me enjoy life and explore. I didnt know ED started in the 80s until listening to a podcast the other day. Embarrassingly. Looking forward to chatting with you all and exploring the dark.
I'm only a few years younger, yes this game has a great heritage (played the original Elite back in the 90s, so much easier to dock at stations now). If you can remember when The Blue Danube originally came out then you're an old player

Without wishing to sound pedantic... Or perhaps I do wish to be a pedant :D ...

The original Elite was released in 1984.

I guess he is in the same boat like me: played the Elite in 90's, even though it was released in 1984. In my case it was because in 1984, I was 11, we lived in a communist country, you were considered rich if you had a phone line at home and two bananas for Christmas,. B&W TV was bourgeois privilege. Computer? We did not even know anything more sophisticated than abacus existed...

I'm 54. I knew of Elite back in the day. I didn't play it until 2017 though.

I was a 'simmer' -- racing sims, jet/prop/helo sims, sub sims and that sort of thing mostly. But I'm also a gamer, so plenty of shooters, sports games, RPGs and wargames too. Everything from Falcon 4, to the Grigsby games, to Grand Prix Legends, to Divinity Original Sin, FIFA, Subnautica, Deus Ex..... The works.

In 2017 I saw friends playing Elite, having a great time. I posted a thread in a different forum wondering which space game would be right for me. The concensus based on my criteria was Elite. So I bought it and really took to it.

It appeals to me on a number of levels. It takes advantage of my good kit (Cougar, Crosswinds, Track IR) which gives it sim cred. It's way different than the other games I play. The notion of space flight, true six-dimensional movement, was a paradigm shift for me after being subjected to things like gravity and uni-directional thrust for so many years.

I knew little of space, which is honestly still true, but Elite has taught me much. I won't go in to all of the things that appeal to me about the game, but the sense of wonder and scale was a big draw for me. And what I call 'seamanship', the routine operation of the ship, especially in portside operations, is infinitely appealing.

Not sure if I can describe it well, but I am in awe of the speed and acceleration we achieve in this game. The way the ships' speed continues to double over itself as you accelerate. Or watch a planet or star recede over my shoulder as my ship gains pace at a fantastic rate. I know it's just a game, but I don't necessarily treat it that way when I'm playing. I AM a starship commander, immersed in the world. And watching a massive planet or sun retreat the way they do is awesome.

Well said, sir!

I suggest you buy VR headset (I can recommend HP Reverb G2) and get Voice Attack plus HCS Voice Packs and the immersion is almost infinite...
