Groups: What's the point?

So after trying to connect with a friend in ED, and failing miserably due to horribly broken comms (we eventually just used Skype which actually worked) and an inability to switch servers, I find myself wondering: What would we actually DO if things had gone according to plan and we had been able to link up? It's not as if any of the available missions actually require teamwork, and while you may have the occasional 1v3 scenario you can generally boost out of harm's way and avoid action if you need to. As it stands, the game has virtually NO incentive for teamwork in any way. So why did they bother making it multiplayer at all? As far as I can tell, there won't be any real "story arc" in the game, and therefor no story centered missions to accomplish with a friend. ED, while being an amazing example of procedural generation and boasting an immense galaxy to explore, is beginning to seem a bit shallow on the mp side. The only reason I can see multiplayer being implemented at all is for PvP, but with the universe being so incredibly large, the chances of coming across another human outside of the hub worlds seems remote at best. Are there plans for coop missions once the game has been released? Will there ever be an incentive, or is it a case of "it is what it is"?

Hmm, me and my friends haven't had problems (since beta-2) to e.g. meet, and server switch (if even required) has been as simple as relogin... MP's clunky, but it's been improving (the far me and friends have noticed) every iteration - don't give up hope, they'll nail it sooner or later for us all.

Co-op missions would be grand! I don't know of the plans (DDA's a hecklot of read...)... but I'm inclined to think such are in the pipeline, among other co-op'able stuff (mining, bounty hunting, etc).

I second all of your concerns. I hear people go mine together, but that is about it. And with the current interface it is extremely hard to interact with other random players in any meaningful way other than with your guns. Which is not always the most productive way to go around things. :)

none of which addresses the OPs comment. There is no valid reason to call this game a multiplayer game at the moment. the islanding/grouping of players to make the really poor P2P networking even work is not a valid reason to call this a multiplayer game. there's no tasks to perform together, no multiple-player PVP (its just one on one unless people have randomly met up with friends). The code is laggy, broken, stutters the engine repeatedly. its just a dog's breakfast.

That the game is MARKETED as a multiplayer experience 'of the grandest scale' is nothing short of nonsense.

the game is reduced to rooms-in-space (not one big universe at all!) and the instances perform poorly even with the very small number of players currently in them. the game is further divided into 3 modes/speeds of transport and 2 of those almost entirely preclude multiplayer, and the one that doesnt (in-system) is also very very low on multiplayer interaction.

its looking pretty bad if we are honest.

Funny... I've met people out there, not just my friends. That makes it "multiplayer" for me, as I'm not soloing.

So you're out there with your friends. Good. Everything works and you all got together just fine. Awesome.

But what did you actually DO together?

Not much, didn't really even try (aside mining) - we're usually "doing our thing" - one might trade, another concentrates in combat, yet another exploring - it's testing ground atm. We'll see about the "do together" later, when everyone gets their proverbial asses to same systems (atm far spread out).

If you don't like it - don't play it. Nobody is forcing you to.

Nobody is forcing you to be so passive-aggressive either. . .

Tone it down a bit, please. This isn't reddit. Nobody should be trying to whiz in someone else's Cheerios just because they express displeasure with an aspect of the game. This "either you like ALL of the game or else don't play it at all" black-and-white-mentality has got to go.

Hypocrite.

Respectully - I'm positing nothing of the sort. Play it all, play parts of it, or don't play any of it - it's entirely up to the individual - and that freedom of choice is absolutely crucial. I simply want to see that freedom of choice remain.

I've done pvp/pve combat with friends in the excavation sites, but it is a bit quirky at the moment still. Still needs a-lot of work for co-op gameplay. We certainly do need an active group list of cmdrs either on-screen or on a side panel option so we can see it live with what they're flying and other data. It would also be best if we could have those in an active group a seperate colour from the rest on radar so we know where they are. We did tend to get lost and separated from each-other in the asteroid field and finding each other was a bit difficult. I'm confident it will all be made right, soon. ;)

Shok.

To all intents and purposes real "groups" do not even exist yet.

The original DDF proposal regarding grouping https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6300 is entirely to do with limiting the pool of people with whom you can possibly be placed in an "island". ie, when FD talk of "grouping" it is in reference to the instancing mechanics, and not "groups" as most people imagine them.

The things that most players familiar with online multiplayer games think of as "group" related (moving as a unit, shared bounties, no-fault friendly fire, no-penalty scooping of jettisoned cargo, etc) were all part of the "alliance" (now apparently referred to as "wing") system, which has not been implemented to date.

But what did you actually DO together?

Every time i play elite i pretty much always meet up with my friends in game...

Had almost zero issues with meeting up since beta 3 and if you do not know what to do when you meet up with friends i cannot see why that is anyone's fault but your own.

For me i'am enjoying bounty hunting at the moment and with all the commanders about with trigger happy fingers i find having an ally to help out when i'am being attacked is pretty useful ;)

Everything is improved for me when i'am with friends in this game, from sharing some amazing scenery or taking out a particularly nasty wanted Anaconda to having each others backs covered when mining.

We chat over voice coms have fun etc... If people want to have the dev's dictate what fun is to be had as a group then i really do wonder what gaming has come to, it would break "immersion" for me to have "multiplayer/group" missions.

If i need help on a mission to say take out an anaconda NPC then ill go find that help..i don't want the devs explaining it to me.

Do you always watch a film alone or sometimes with a friend? What do you gain from watching the film with a friend?...its called a shared experience and the benefits of sharing it are obvious surely...

At the moment, there are no multiplayer co-op features implemented at all. The only multiplayer aspect of the game that is currently implemented is that you can meet up visually and chat, but that's about it at the moment.

As Mr Hellhawk points out tho, there is a planned feature (aka "Wingman"), but it seems that nobody knows how far into the feature it is before we see that implemented.
