A gentle reminder that...
The vast majority of SC's promised features are not currently in the game:
Listing everything in its entirety would be a fool's errand. But
this tracker, despite not being maintained for over 2 years, still documents many of the absurd pledges sitting on CIG's slate. And lord is the list long...
Numerous fundamental technologies are still not in place after 9 years of production:
The networking, the expansive game world, the background simulation, an engine performant and specialised enough to support capital ship combat & interiors at scale. Etc etc. Almost all of these aspects have been scheduled to arrive in earnest way before now. None of them have. Because CIG are clearly struggling mightily with all of them.
On the key issue of networking they still don't even know how the first version, slated to arrive around their 10 year anniversary,
is supposed to scale. They literally don't know if it can support the above scope. But you've got to start somewhere right...? Or some decade
Many of the existing gameplay systems & services will need to be significantly altered (or rebuilt) due to the introduction of the above:
Teams as diverse as AI, to Vehicles, to Audio, to UI are all reworking
their systems as part of the 'Tier 0' server meshing rollout, something
underlined at its announcement.
It is also hard to think of a glossier alpha build with more low hanging fruit for
'tree loss' style downsizing if required. It's happened before. It would hardly be surprising if it happened again as they add more to the alpha...
With so many radical changes planned for the game's infrastructure, and so many extensive additions intended to be supported by it, assuming that what exists now is 'already made' would be a daft assumption indeed
Conclusion:
Most game fans don't understand game dev, and that is fine.
But the most excitable end of SC's fandom
really don't understand game dev. Because navigating the demo tier architecture of the game (while beguiled by its consummate art), and guzzling on the perpetual power hose of dev chat aimed at their faces, ironically convinces them that maybe they do
There's nothing more dangerous than a little bit of knowledge, as the saying goes.
And there's also nothing more precarious than something that's only half built. (Even if it is sitting on a great wodge of cash

)
