ED on Consoles just died official

Whilst I appreciate the disappointment that console development is being shelved, as a multiple PC account, as well as an XBox account holder, I feel it should be pointed out that Horizons IS most of the Elite Dangerous game. Elite is NOT being shut down, and critical updates etc. will continue.

Yes, there are areas of Odyssey that many console players wanted to get involved with I'm sure. For me, although I have tried some of the Odyssey features, in truth I still play almost exclusively using Horizons-only features. I got yet another PC account at Christmas - for the CG - and that is Horizons only.

It is a shame, and I would like to have seen greater interaction with the console players, (as exists on games like Fortnite for example), but there really is no need to feel that console players have to pack it all in. There is still influence with the BGS, the CGs (?) and there is still the central Elite and Horizons game, which is what it is really all about.

I don't care if Elite's servers are shut down, I'll never give my time to a dead game again. I will never support Frontier again in this game or in others. I threw away 7 years of play in a game buried with no future. Frontier disrespected the entire console community but wanted our money. Horizon can slip it where the sun doesn't beat

You certainly don't speak for me and many other console players I assume.
Elite isn't going anywhere anylonger on console, no progress, no continuation of stories, no new items like ships or whatnot.
I've put over 4000 hours in this game and spent quite some money on items from the store thinking I'd be in for a long ride but it just abruptly stops here for console players.
All we can do is watch pc players getting more and more content while we just keep flying in circles because there's nothing new to look forward to.

I don't regret my time and money spent on ED mind you but the loss of any future with ED as a growing adventure is leaving me gutted and highly disappointed.
Frontier just shoved thousands of players under the bus, they've lost all my respect.

Unfortunately, knowing Frontier's track record of their "promises" and "plans", this is where you are almost certainly wrong. Now they say this, but it will probably change in the near future. Console players will never get any communication anymore, there will be complete silence, then one day a statement will come saying Elite on consoles will be shut down completely on this and this day. And when you ask they will spread their arms and say "our plans changed", and "moving forward" and "providing the best for our fans" and "hard decision". For many years now, Frontier has been in a downhill regarding their promises and delivery. Remember, the whole story started with "The New Era" of Elite, arriving at the end of 2020. It ended up being the death of the console versions and a dumpster fire on PC. After all this, there is sadly no reason to trust their promise that the console versions will be maintained going forward.

On the other hand Frontier showed themself to be quite unique, I don't recall any developer ever pulling a stunt like this.

Well... you might be mistaken tho. Seems that for certain game types, consoles are not quite good.

Mechwarriors 5 Mercenaries It was launched on PS last year.
And this lead to a significant operational loss - significant enough to basically lead to abandonment of any further plans for Mechwarrior 5 and the studio that was developing it being relegated to support duties for another title. So PS basically killed any future plans for MW5
MW5 still running, but any dev was stopped. (Pretty much like Horizons)

PIRANHA (this happened last year)
Piranha celebrated the return of MechWarrior 5 on PlayStation for the first time in over 20 years.
Net revenue and adjusted EBITDA for the quarter came in at SEK 47.6 million and SEK -8.4 million,
respectively. Although the community reception was very positive, the overall sales on PlayStation
had low impact, resulting in an operating loss for the quarter. Piranha has largely finished its
development on MechWarrior 5 with limited residual effort for future maintenance. In Q4 2021, as
the team further ramps down on MechWarrior 5, the plan is to fully utilize Piranha’s talented team
to staff various key projects for the group such as the Lord of the Rings Online update.

I didn't know that, I stand corrected.
Still quite a unique accomplishment imho.
One to be proud to of......

They can definitively transfer the accounts from console to PC with all the unlocks, ships, mats etc... probably it will take some time, but at least a % of the players will not lose what they've achieved, built and invested in the game. I have also a PC account, may be a merge of the two is possible who knows... no reason to keep two at this point.
Yes send all my xbox cmdr credits, rep, and ships over to my PC cmdr. Don't scratch my Corvette shipping it either.

I think there are now too many software developers who are trying to spread the availability of their software far beyond the scope of what they are capable of providing. Those who do so usually end up diluting the content because they require so many resources being allocated to each project, rather than one.

My thought is they should concentrate on one platform, and like me, they’ll change platform to play a game if it’s good enough to play.

There would be half the anger if FD had, had profile transfers ready or confirmed.

They announced it and then gave us no hope that we would be able to save our profiles if we want to continue our journey to new places.

Yeah we just got totally screwed over with no option to transfer to PC.
I’ve literally spent hundreds of pounds and played hundreds of hours on this game just to have it completely abandoned after a year of patiently waiting for Odyssey.

Probably won’t be coming back here again either as I’m certainly not going to buy a gaming PC and replay/repurchase everything from the last 4 years.

I guess that’s the end of my ED journey...
I feel sorry for the 3000+ hours and the Frontier Points / Arx i invested in my XB account.
Sure, i'm well aware it's not going anywhere... but that's kinda the point, isn't it?
Well that’s it no more Elite, not spending any more money or time on this, feel very let down by Frontier on this news. 😩
Yes, yes. I've got my PC account that I haven't touched in years with 6000+hrs in it.

My PS4 account has been played since 2016 and I don't know how many hours I put into that.

Luckily I didn't spend any real money on ARX and only on buying the game on both platforms.

So much for following this franchise and playing this franchise for decades....... what a waste.
We've waited a year for news of Odyssey on console and now we have it. It's not the news we wanted but there it is. All we have to do now is wait another year for info about transferring accounts
We'll get info in a year that the console servers are being pulled down and the game killed entirely on consoles.

The PC version will be financially unviable by then so don't expect transfers.....

I have a PC. Again, I've had the Xbox CMDR since 2015 and asking me to just delete it and forget it if I want to play Odyssey is such a kick in the teeth.
Both console communities have made a huge contribution to Elite and asking us to forget all that and just start again isn't acceptable.
It's not enough for Frontier to simply say they care about their communities, they have to show it.
Everything back as a clone Cmdr to PC and a .....

BRAND NEW ANACONDAaaAAA

A two year old PC has problems with Odyssey, why ever believe it could perform satisfactorily on PS4 or Xbox?
Odyssey runs much better relatively with a faster GPU and new PC and would probably improve on a new gen console.

The marketplace fact that there has been a complete scarcity of next gen consoles to purchase for two years, let alone develop for, kind of makes it unprofitable.

It was always a shoehorn into consoles, there was always compromises. No more distraction from single codebase dev now..
Tell me none of the console players haven't had their money's worth 10 times over again.

Some consolation: I think the Horizon servers will be there for a while. Its costs pennies to run a P to P network.
Once separate, Horizons also could be come moddable eventually

I’ve been allowing the dust to settle in my own mind before posting here. Here’s my .2 CR for what it may, or indeed, may not be worth to anyone. I could in the past have been seen to be defending Frontier. However this time is different. In the very, extended long term I feel that this may turn out to be an error in judgement by them, but that will only become clear in the fullness of time.

For my own part, I am as bummed out as anyone by this announcement from FD. I’m not going to try to pretend that I’m not feeling a little hurt, betrayed, cheated, disappointed, failed and ultimately let down by Frontier. There was a glimmer of hope still left that Odyssey might make it to the console platforms, this has now been extinguished. There’s a flip side there, which is, that they have finally called it. It’s bittersweet. A code refresh was originally touted as a part of ED Odyssey from the get go. There was always the chance that this would include dropping support for non PC, essentially Windows OS, Direct X centered platforms. Which in strict terms of a project and it’s development does make some sense.

Just as many others have. I’ve paid real world cash for cosmetics. I’ve not added it all up but probably more than I paid for the original base title and horizons initially as a cash value. But, I do feel that comparatively to some other titles in my library, I have had my moneys worth out of it, at least from the perspective of DLC content.

Just like my fellow CMDR’s, I’ve put many hours into the simulation. Built and engineered a fleet to meet my needs. Done the horrendous slog of the rank grinding, eventually maxing it all out.

I’ve been out beyond Beagle Point, to Sag A, the Great Annihilator, Colonia, gallivanting around the galaxy, and all the other galactic sightseeing that we’ve all enjoyed. I have a folder of some very cool screenshots used as desktop wallpapers taken around nebulae, and other sights, etc.

I’ve made first discoveries while exploring. Battled with a faction in conflict zones. Enjoyed popping NPC piratical types at Haz Res sites and CNB’s. Run missions as a mercenary, aid relief, merchant, etc. Visited and interacted with an extinct alien race’s structures. Participated in the Human vs Thargoid conflict. Contributed to community goals. Been a successful commercial passenger enterprise. Mined planetary rings for precious resources. Hooned and boomed my way around vast geological surface features on far away planetary bodies. And so on. I believe there's still a mountain on a rocky body somewhere in the Col-285 sector with the imprint of the front of my ship on it.

I’m not sure this is the end of ED for me, I may drop in from time to time. But I am going to take a step back from it. I’ll never be buying any more arx, that’s for sure. I’d also think twice before investing in any Frontier products in future. I’ve met some totally awesome people, some perhaps not so awesome. Whom I hope to keep in touch with.

I do have a hobby PC account, but I have neither the means, or the desire to build a super-duper gaming PC. It’s unlikely that I’d want to bulk transfer my Xbox account over, unless console ED is nuked completely. I was once looking at a GPU upgrade of a 6700xt or a 3060ti, but until the market settles down there’s not much point in trying to save up the pennies for it. I was lucky enough to land a Series X last year, which is next gen enough for me. There’s also still no native Linux ED client, though that’s another kettle of fish entirely.

In closing, I’ve been disgusted by a small fraction of users, not necessarily from this forum. In their choice to become abusive to others including, but not limited to, fellow CMDR’s and FD staff regarding this recent announcement. Abusing others is never okay. There’s no available excuse for it. Frankly, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

O-bloody-seven, my fellow CMDR’s!

Edit: The typo fairy had struck again.
