The new Protect missions

I managed to configure and jump my carrier before the rush, so I decided to check out the new protect missions. I had to try four stations before I eventually found one in Omicron-2 Eridani (currently in Bust state, not sure if it matters).
Essentially these missions require you to fight off waves of NPCs delivered via dropships, stopping them from reaching the object you're protecting and sabotaging it. In the mission I tried it was three waves with two dropships each.
If you're good enough at on-foot combat these seem no issue solo; I did it using both a Scorpion and G3 gear. You do get some friendly NPCs to help you out but they don't last long.

Oddly my Scorpion's paintjob disappeared, and the client crashed when the mission started (probably just AMD Relive recording, that makes the game unstable as hell)

Can you use your ship to shoot the baddies or do you need to be on ground ? Does the objective take friendly fire from, say, dumbfire missiles ?

Air support should be able to take them out yes. What I'm not sure is if the mission would trigger unless you get out of your ship. You might have to get out & then back in again....give it a try!

I'm a few thousands LY away from any settlements right now :) I'll try in a few days

Foot mission payout is...
Fdev is unable to balance payout properly. It's not new.
For example, right now, I'm thousands of LY away from Sol. Exploring. I've been there for days, and according to EDSM, I have about 150m of exploration datas. I was lucky to have a lot of water world, a few ammonia world and even some earth like world. All the most valuable you can have.
Meanwhile, I could have done that amount of money in 1-2h bounty hunting, or 3-4 trading run with decent payout (like the last CG, where I did 33m/load).

It's even worse for exobio, since it pay less, but you have to 1/to find a planet with it 2/scan for it 3/find them 4/scan 3 of them.

Or take bounty hunting vs space cz : bounty hunting is much easier, yet reward a LOT more than CZ.

And then you have plenty of other mission with very poor reward for time invested.

The only probable reason to take such missions is the material reward.
Yep. Now I'm done upgrading and engineering suits and weapons, I really feel at a loss as to what else to do on foot while in the bubble. I'd open an on-foot materials shop if the game would let me lol -- 100 max mats over all three categories, what a bad joke that is!

Or because it might be fun.....
Some missions are, most are not imo. They are tolerable while gindin...er...diligently gathering...upgrade and engineering materials, but after the first 100 or so they get more than a bit tedious. Some of the covert missions can be fun but the risk/reward ratio is so low, why bother?

So the "protect" mission type is only for foot gameplay?

I was kinda hoping these were also acting like precursors to escort missions in space. Maybe starting out with stationary ships that are disabled or wrecked that you can jump in and protect against a few enemy ships trying to scavenge it or capture occupants, etc.

This would eventually evolve into full escort missions where you have to protect ships moving from some station in system A to some station in system B.

I tried one. The helper npcs all ran away. The baddies dropped basically on top of the box we (I) had to protect.
My scorpion got blown up and then they took the box without much problem while the rest of the baddies spammed me with grenades. I managed to get the shields off of two of them.

Once I lost, the npc "helpers" came back.

I kind of thought these might be ones where waves would come in from the edge of the settlement toward the goal rather than dropping right on top of it.

I've found it is useless to do anything on foot between G3 and G4... not even bothered about reaching G5.

I was drawn to the thread title, after suggesting 'Magnificent Seven/Mandalorian missions' in the anarchies thread. Now, if peasants/NPCs, as well as chemical containers could be protected...

Exactly. Why should we even bother with them? Killing a wanted NPC ship is usually done roughly in a minute or two and yields at least 400k-500k. Killing a conda+ yields around 800k...

The only probable reason to take such missions is the material reward.
Taking a mission to kill wanted pirate rewards you 2-5 mil plus the bounty. Thats easy money compared to on foot. But at the end it is personal choice of prefered gameplay and fun. At this moment I dont need more credits as I have a FC and around 15 bil in cash. I need fun gameplay and engineering mats.
