It seems that there has been song and dance to explain away the way the game works in regards to your pilot and their near immortality.
The explanation behind it is almost irrelevant, because the game plays the way the game plays. It would just be nice to have the reasoning make sense.
Telepresence is inconsistent and clunky, and does not jive with the way the game actually plays.
You get killed on foot, and you either respawn on your ship or in a facility. (Weird)
You get killed in your SRV, and you teleport back to your ship. (Also weird)
You get killed in space by blowing up your ship, you get teleported to an appropriate facility with a chance to buy back your ship. (That's incredibly fast!)
Again, not that this NEEDS to be addressed, but having a consistent reason would just feel better.
I suggest "It's a clone body."
They can be manufactured at any station. Your ship can manufacture them on the go.
They can be sent with SRV's and SLF's, and justify on-foot exploration. (And landing SLF's!)
Your consciousness and original body would be safely stored/backed up somewhere, and used to start a new clone body.
If it was truly a telepresent body in your spaceship, you would have no reason to have life support. A clone would require air.
If you were telepresent in your SRV, what's going on in your suit that it can get out and walk around? ("Hey, who turned out the lights?")
If it's truly your actual self, and your ship explodes on the far side of the galaxy, someone magically rescues your escape pod and instantaneously takes you to a station? Thousands of LY away? (Well then, I want the craft responsible for rescuing escape pods!)
Should this be implemented, you could die without worrying about the dizzying craziness involved with explaining some of the death mechanics. It's easy: It's a new body. Boom, done.
Again, this doesn't really matter. It's not going to change gameplay mechanics, just the story we get when we get blown up as to how we're still able to play.
Just ret-con it, say it was always this way. Fiercely ignore anyone who insists on that there was a crazy thing called telepresence. Make up a story as to why Commanders have it and other people don't. Or maybe everyone has it available, I don't know. It's only a suggestion. Do with it as you wish.
