Console Update

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
And I’m a poor man I spent countless dollars on those stupid micro transactions and I want every penny I spent back or I sue

Hey OA, we have no plans to develop Odyssey for next gen consoles.
This is what bothers me most of all in this. I would get it if they said "we have no plans at the moment", or "this might be something we look into in the future, but there are no plans at present", but why say such an absolute no.
This sounds like Odyssey is the last feature update we will all see (PC included).

Elite was never FPS - this seems to me too far from what I know I wanted from this game. Yes I want to walk round ships and bases, but that would have been enough - and it wouldn't have meant ditching a large percentage of a loyal player base doing this. Horizons (on PC) is still the better version of the game, graphically and performance wise, is this going to ever change?

Odyssey seems to have been an expensive error and they are just getting out of a hole with those that have paid for it - why burn your bridges and not want to expand to next gen consoles? More money means more staff are able to invest time and effort on the game.

Sad to say I think this is just down to firefighting now, and once the firefighters have put out the fire they will go.

It's not an absolute no.

They said the same thing last year in August when people were asking if Cretaceous Camp will come to JWE2 - we have no plans to
Here comes March 2022, JWE2 update 2 brings in... Cretaceous Camp
But that is more of a case of them having no plans, people ask for it and they realise Camp Cretaceous is a great idea for a DLC considering how popular this series was.

This is not a case where they have not thought of doing this on next gen console (surely not!)

Since all games they launched since 2020 (except Planet Zoo) were also launched on NexGen consoles, launching Elite on nextgens seems quite a normal thing to expect.
Also since PC and XB are really similar, having Odyssey running on XB Series doesnt seem to be much of a Port.

So to me, no plans is a figure of speech with a very limited valid time-frame.
As in it's always true when you say it, but at the next monthly dev meeting plans might have an opportunity to change.

FD have been (justifiably imo) flamed for their wishy-washy statements leading to false hope in the past. Personally despite the news sucking and despite imo it being a worrying sign for PC as well that they are not announcing for current gen....... the one thing I will give them respect for is that they were very clear on the matter.

I don't think this is the right thing to have a go at them for and personally I would take them at their word. ED:O on console is over. anyone hanging on now I think is setting themselves up for dissapointment.

best chance now is for console folk to hope for ED2

I guess the "at the moment" is implicit to any statement from Frontier. Nobody knows the future.

They've used phrases like "at the moment" or "not at launch" and people took that as meaning "later", which is not true.

I've always considered "We have no plans at the moment" meaning "Almost certainly no" when it comes from anyone.
The "not a launch" does heavily imply that it is planned to come later - being the cynic I am, I assume this is done to keep up hope even if there's absolutely no plans for it at all. But technically it doesn't say that.

sue on what ground?
You have litterally no legal basis for any claim here.
You bought Horizons as is, and cosmetics as is.
You can not proof any claim that you bought elite dangerous only for odyssey, as you, obviously, played the base game and bought cosmetics in it.
You can not proof any claim that Fdev broke any promises to you, the consumer, the announcement of a product for a platform does not constitute a promise, it constitutes an announcement of plans.

The question could be: It will be Elite playable offline in consoles in some way after shutdown? Doubt it unles there is some local files/database to store all "server" data
What i assume the will do at most is make the simulations playable offline(if they arent already)

and there you haev it, playabl eoffline elite

DB did promise that as a counter to dropping offline and to appease those who wanted it for the longevity of the game..... but I really would not assume anything.

just like Gabe N promised if ever valve went bust and steam went down they would release offline installers for all their games. it's a nice sound bite but really not legally enforceable.

I wouldn't sue either as there is no ground, so why must you jump on it lol

Since when did you make the decisions here?

He never said he bought Odyssey

That's none of our business either, so why even reply on it. Just an FYI, playing Elite doesn't make you elite lmao

Did not FDEV advertise Elite on PSN and Odyssey expansion?

I don't think DB ever promised that. He's only said it's a possibility.

That's how you get disappointed and then throw "but u prooooooomiiiiiiiiised!" tantrums... (well, not you personally)
