Console Update

I don't think DB ever promised that. He's only said it's a possibility.

That's how you get disappointed and then throw "but u prooooooomiiiiiiiiised!" tantrums... (well, not you personally)
This is what he said in Newsletter #50 regarding offline being dropped:

What is Frontier's plan for when the servers shut down?
We do not plan to shut the servers down, but understand it is a reasonable question. We are at the beginning of the game not the end and are focused on creating a game that we hope will be played for many years in the future. We do plan to take regular archives of the game and the servers, to preserve the game for the future.

Could the server code be released publicly some day when the servers are shut down?
Yes. This is something we would do if for whatever reason we cannot keep the game going.”

Fair enough. I still personally wouldn't read that as a hard promise.

They said "it will have" about a Polish language in the game when it was still in beta and yet here we are 7 years later...

hmmmm whilst promised was maybe a little strong - and i dont have the time or energy to go digging - i am pretty confident it was more than a possibility.

i think it was more of a we will be able to but be warned it could be a significant amount of data.................... which sure..... with "we will be able to" you (not you personally) could weasel word it to argue just because someone is able to do something does not mean they WILL do it... but that would be being obtuse imo, i always thought the meaning was quite clear.

edit.... ninjas are out today ;)

I think i was pretty accurate then, not bad considering it was 9 or 10 years ago, esp as i cant remember what i had for tea last week!.

I know that the forum is in love with the idea of holding Frontier to things they said near a decade ago but I really wouldn't hold out much hope of them sticking to this plan if/when the game shutters.

Did not FDEV advertise Elite on PSN and Odyssey expansion?

Can someone get some form of an update on the first part ?Cause it seem like this the end of the road for console.

you are right i too am not confident either ..... but that said .... that is seriously some "having their cake and eating it" letting them off the hook right there.

person says "please give us lots of money to make this product......... it is going to take us a long time with updates coming over 10 years so you will need to be patient, but trust us , join us for the journey and we will deliver"

10 years past and customer says "erm, there seems to be a disconnect between what you said and what you delivered.... can i have an update please".

person replies............. say what? that was ages ago you cant expect us to stand by that".

The entire premise was based around having to wait patiently for years...... ask too soon and the reply would be - we told you it would take ages........ now you are saying because we waited ages then that is also wrong?... besides the question of sunsetting the game really had to be something which would be expected many years down the road.

imagine if i bought a car with an 8 year warranty, 7 years in you try to claim on that warranty and they said sorry sir we only honour commitments we made less than 3 years ago.

In the terms we sign on joining the game (those we never read) there are some clauses about discontinuation of service, maybe someone could dive onto it and check how much time is specified about communication of "end of service" and the shutdown.

EDIT: Found this
View attachment 296566

The question could be: It will be Elite playable offline in consoles in some way after shutdown? Doubt it unles there is some local files/database to store all "server" data
Just because they put it in their terms of service doesn't mean that they aren't legally required to provide some sort of lead time before actually turning the servers off. But again this is UK law, which apparenltly has allowed Frontier to get away with stuff they would most definitely have gotten sued for if they were a US company, so the idea of "reasonable amount of time" might not even be a thing in their legal system. I don't know.

We (as in the Polish community in general) have been asking every year, but the answer was always "cannot confirm nor deny", which is the worst, as it's a Schrodinger's reply.

We got used to it by now I think.

A part of me really wants to continue playing. And if I could have all my assets and achievements transferred from PlayStation to PC, I totally would. I would purchase Odyssey, continue to buy Arx and support Frontier (in spite of how livid this situation has made me)...

But as I said before;
I 👏 am 👏 not 👏 starting 👏 over 👏.

Regarding transfers FDev recently said:

"Whilst we don't have any information to give you right now, the team have been listening and noting the questions you have, as well as your requests for a more substantial platform transfer of commander data."

And this is where having gotten used to the Schrödinger responses comes into play.

When I read that statement, my take-away from that is;
We're gonna say "we don't know, maybe, no comment" for about a year now, only to then tell you "we were gonna do it, but the sun was in our eyes and new phone, who dis?".

And how could it not be?
Insofar as Frontier still has any credibility, it's pretty infinitesimal.

Not holding my breath for that data transfer.

servers are still on. all this is a DLC which they never took money for which is now cancelled. it sucks..... but to suggest it's illegal is bonkers imo
back in the day half life was advertised on Dreamcast. it never came out.***
bandsrsnatch never came out on the speccy and closer to home elite FFE was cancelled on the Amiga. it sucks... but it happens.

*** an aside I got to play half life on the Dreamcast. insane it never came out. visually in some areas it was better than the pc. Frame rate was a bit janky... but I have played worse (that is not saying much I played wing commander on the A500)

To be fair to Frontier, they gave macOS users a fair amount of notice.

Oh ,how so ?new content, nope, new features, nope, and further development ,nope.Kindda seems like the beginning of the end to me .

The end of the road is when they stop the servers and the game is no longer playable on Consoles.
Could be 1 year from now on. Could be 2 years.

"Yes, your honor, I would like to complain about a non-existing game for my console, for which I havent paid."

"Err, I see. What exactly is the nature of your complaint?"

"I wish it existed, your honor."

"..."

"So I could buy it."

Would you consider porting Elite Dangerous Odyssey to stadia? So we console players would not have to buy expensive hardware and could still enjoy the game as we wish.

As someone who had just started planning an expedition that would end in March of 2023, the day before the cancelation announcement, it would be nice to know this. I’ll finish what I started if there’s a point.
