Canopy breaches need to be more common

Like why is this so rare for some ships?
What do you mean?

My ships I take out to CZs routinely have their canopy shot out (corollary: Why I always pack A-rate life support).
My ships I use for non-CRCR shipment of Thargoids also regularly drop canopy, because that's how corrosive damage works.

But my other ships? If I'm not slamming them into suns or getting into firefights when they aren't kitted for combat... well... why would their canopys burst?

I know I've been away for 5+ years but I remember taking my Eagle in CZs and having my canopy burst within moments of engaging a target and then giving it everything I can to destroy them before hobbling to the closest station its one of the smuggest moments but there are also times when you can keep going for a period of time
the majority of time the breaches were at my own fault from not being careful on who i target and engage and not paying attention to friendlies around who can support

I have had this happen a few times in the past, sure is a hair raising experience getting back to a station and getting through the slot.

It's not rare if you configure your ships without shields and plenty of armour. Or if you fight Thargoids, they aim at your cockpit and life support.

Short stubby ships that have their cockpit more or less on the centerline of the ship take more hits to the cockpit because NPCs aim for the centre of a ship. For instance: the Federal Assault Ship. I flew a hull-tanking FAS for a long time and lost the cockpit so many times it became routine (carried a small AFMU to repair it between fights). No need to die because of a breached cockpit. You'll be amazed how far you can travel in 7.5 mins (D-rated Life Support is all you ever need). But nowadays you can synthesize oxygen. Unfortunately that took away the tension and slight sense of panic that a cockpit breach used to cause. :(

Engine flame outs, control thrusters should get damaged and stop working.
Landing gear should have issues it you land too hard.

Ed meant to be a sim, its like and arcade game.

I fly into stations, ram in to parts of station to slowdown and stop.

No consequences for abusing your ship.

Dam shame, there should be

I think it tries to be both. But its poorly designed in many places. Likewise it tries to be scientifically accurate in some respects (planet geology, stellar forge etc), yet has harmless black holes and an entire galaxy that can be buckyballed across in a few hours, not to mention nonsensical things like magic bags of synth mats that are omnipresent.

But yeah, I agree with the rest of your post. It would be cool if there were more intricate and in-depth wear and tear mechanics in the game. Not going to happen in Elite though, you'll need to see the other game for that kind of fidelity.

Because they have smaller canopies?

Not sure I'd be keen on the idea of canopy breaches being common, unless the game also had some way to mitigate the issue.

The ability to synth' oxygen means you don't really need A-rated life-support anymore, and you can make it home safely, but it's probably still going to force you to stop doing whatever you were doing.

If canopy breaches were more common there'd probably need to be something you could do as a temporary fix to prevent it becoming irritatng but, in that case, there wouldn't really be much point in implementing it to begin with.

Ok, but we have holographic HUD display. Our left and right hand panel are holo, but the canopy isn't, it's a screen thing that get removed if it's broken.
How does that make sense ? Why isn't there a safety ? Dunno.

Canopy breach is a "back to port" thing. Without any kind of aiming and limited time, there is little else to do. Which is annoying.

Also, canopy breach is not RNG. Canopy have HP, if they are hit they lose HP. When it reach 0 they breach. Like any other modules. Some ship have BIG canopy, and get canopy breach often. Other less so.

Finally, there is the whole issue of making shield tanking superior (no risk for breach).

The Vulture is very prone to get its canopy blown out, but you can avoid it completely if you fit module reinforcements in the two big optional slots, like this:

Bandages you go out and put on yourself
