The moon in Sol

The moon is a Generation 1 planet - texture. And a low-resolution one at that.

It has been a number of years, any chance on some communication over how it remains none-Landable inside the games lore?
And what are the actual real world reasons(?)

or are there plans to make it landable(?) in the future(?)

My guess would be that it's currently just a sphere that's been wrapped in a "moon" texture and we're not going to be able to land on it until it actually gets a proper 3D surface map.

Shame really cos there are already 3D maps of the moon surface available on sites like Turbosquid, although negotiating for commercial use would probably be expensive.
Dunno if NASA has any open-source data that could be used.

The other thing is, the moon has quite a bit of human junk on it and I'm sure FDev would want to add a lot of it so modelling the junk, and positioning it all, would be a fairly big job.

We had a rotating real map of Mars back in Red Faction for the menu. Or was it doom 2016 ? Been a while, but I remember because I thought it was really cool and tried to see if there was a way to extract it.

I'm sure a real map of the moon in 2022 is something we can do :D

Wouldn't it be good if The Moon was a land-able and drive-able testing ground for SRVs without the possibility of interdiction / pirating due to the high security status...

Maybe it is not land-able because it is not safe from Earth generated space-junk crashing into the surface... just maybe, perhaps.

Real-world reason? They don't want to go to the trouble of making the Appollo landers, and then all the other stuff that's up there (ie Chinese landers for example) and have to keep updating it. This is speculation, I don't work for Frontier and have no idea what the actual reason is.

In-game lore reason? I don't know, maybe the moon is a theme park owned by Disney (as in Futurama)

And don't expect it to ever be landable.

To have proper craters in the right places you'd need to generate them procedurally from data somehow, a turbosquid bump/texture map isn't going to be even vaguely high enough resolution to let you land there.

Sorry....but I must make a whooshing sound.....the reference to "they aren't real" was to the fact we are also playing a game in which the moon isn't, well real...and neither are our in game characters.... (y)

I thought the moon was a studio set in Area 51? All the conspiracy nutjobs insist it is. Are you telling me the moon is REAL?

I think they wanted to use the set in Area 51, but Neil and Buzz insisted that the fake imagery be filmed on location to make the charade look more authentic. I guess they were right, as people are still falling for the moon-landing hoaxes to this day.

IIRC It (along with that moon in Lave) were declared 'locked' as the technology at the time wasn't able to represent what is supposed to be there, with intent on making them available once it was (based on a snippet of an Allen Stroud conversation on Lave Radio).

Yes, like comets.

Still waiting, any day now !
