Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club Presents: The Aquarian Job (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 2)

So many failed runs, so many obscured jumps, so many insurance claims, but good to revisit a great BRC course before the Horizons universe is possibly lost forever. Thanks @Brother Sabathius :)

After messing up three more runs tonight (plus another where I lost 80% hull launching) I'm off to bed.
I'm uploading my least terrible run, with a dreadful 12min SRV section, but the best I managed and at least managed the 1% hull bonus. I'll submit the run in the morning.

I had what would have been a better run last night, but unfortunately reviewing my video I found that I'd landed 7.9km from the settlement, so that one went in the bin.

An unexpected RL issue decided to consume my planned early morning session, and as expected, my afternoon and evening were rather busy, so I never had an opportunity to take out my Regulation Cobra. Mental note: plan ahead for the next race, so I'm not (re)learning the course as I go. ;)

Thanks, @Brother Sabathius, for hosting this revisit of a classic Buckyball Race.

Well that was a fantastic weeks racing. Thank you @Brother Sabathius .
I came into this racing knowing that my SRV skills were at best hit & miss. Having got to grips with some issues I was having and some sound advice from @Alec Turner & @sgurr , it all started to make sense. While I could never claim to be good I can claim to be "able" now. My best single SRV section came in at 7:30 which for someone who was SRV challenged I felt was not bad at all.
Had a great time watching those scoreboards and again a fantastic number of entries.
Well done everyone and hope to see you all at the next one.

Just submitted my best run in the Cobra, with 12% hull left and anonymous access only. The next and final run, started at 10 to midnight, wasn't nearly as exciting, or as fast. Plenty of room for improvement, if only the race could run for another month or so!

I've had a great time with this race, thanks @Brother Sabathius, and I've learned a new skill. There will be a lot of SRVing in my immediate future! Well done to everybody and looking forward to seeing you at the next one.

PS. @Alec Turner - I think that SRV of yours should be renamed Litterbug ;)

@Brother Sabathius

Thanks you so much for doing this. I wasn't Buckyballing when this was first run so to get a chance now was just awesome, it's such a good course and excellent choice to be Rebooted!
I had so much fun optimising this, planning ways around obscured jumps and slowly improving my SC approaches, learned a lot.

Brilliant to see folk out on the course and so many entries (sorry, not sorry for the work that mean Sabathius ;) )

A little highlights reel I put together:

What a fantastic race! Even if I was somewhat absent for most of it I really enjoyed being able to revisit one of my favourite Buckyball runs of old and am very grateful to @Brother Sabathius for hosting this and also for giving me the opportunity to recreate Tannick Seldon's legendary journey. Loving all the enthusiasm from the folks relatively new to all this and loving all the blooper reels too!

And on the subject of videos - here's my 23:32 0% Cobra run, edited, sped up (in parts) and with added music to pump up the adrenalin and make it play kinda how it felt at the time.

Absolutely. Who knows if or when FD will do a code merge that means Horizons planets are gone forever but I've loved the opportunity to revisit the terrain around Cooper which was just sooooo perfect for this race (other opinions are available ). While people are still in the area, you should go check out the terrain down on Kumay a bit more (that's the Bridger Town planet). In my opinion that planet has some of the best looking terrain in the entire game.

You drive over 2500km but do they say "you should rename your SRV to Worldbeater"?
No they do not.
You dump a few empty bottles ....
🤦‍♂️

Oh, and speaking of that drive, for completionists who feel robbed of the ending, here's the final 62km (it turns out the first 62km WAS the hardest!).

@Brother Sabathius the google form is disabled now, so I've PMed you my "best" (least rubbish) attempt from yesterday. I hope you'll still accept it.

Definitely need to practise a lot on SRVs, I did enjoy the SRV section more than in the past though. I tweaked my controller settings so that I'm not accidentally rolling (as often) when I don't want to and that helps loads. Now I just need to get things under control for when I do want to roll!

I'm planning to do Alec "roll - pitch - roll" adjustments when I bounce slightly off track, but at the moment I totally lose it whenever I try. I either go the wrong way or lose control of the FA-Off roll.

Would have been a lot faster I think if I hadn't lost my bearings driving away from Cooper Arena, I ended up driving into the hills before reaching 5km, which didn't happen on my other runs.

I'm going to watch a few other runs later to try and git-gooder, as I'm a bit embarrassed by being whupped by a boodly Federal Corvette!!!!

Also: sorry for not running in Regulation, I'd had less time to race than I'd hoped and was convinced that I had a much better run about to happen, but everything went wrong last night. This is such a great race course (although I remember at least seeing Cooper Arena in daylight last time), it's very challenging - truly the work of an evil genius don't you think @AkenBosch?

And there we have it! All the entries are in!

After a week and a bit of tough competition, we finally have our winners, with some amazing times being set on the course. It's been fantastic to see just how enthusiastically all the competitors have got their teeth into it and, in many cases, improved their times spectacularly.

There is only 1 time awaiting verification in Open, if @Cheetah can DM me their video/screenshots for that run I can finalise that one.

In Regulation there are 3 Honourable mentions. Alec Turners epic half-lap of the planet and triumphant return to London (via space-prison) to complete the slowest entry, and also two runners that made only one mistake. Their shields were switched on. I have included them to recognize their noble effort, but they cannot be placed or score points in the race.

Thank you everyone for taking part. Told you it was a fun race huh :D

I tried a few times throughout yesterday, but a couple of explosions and a worse time means I'm certainly not going to get any higher on the leaderboard. It's been good fun revisiting this race though. Thanks for organising and sticking with it Brother Sabathius.

10th place, going to have to get used to this with so many people running the regulation class this series :D Well done to those who were on the podium, and a special mention to those who managed to make it with 100% hull! That's more impressive than 0-1%

Thanks to Brother Sabathius for hosting this event, frustrating as it could be (all the best ones are). Nice to see so many new names getting on the scoreboard and putting in the effort to improve their time, hope to see many of you at the next one. :)

I'll list my best runs here for those interested in watching them:
Unlimited Orca, 17:14
Unlimited DBX, 16:05 (SRV section)
Regulation Cobra, 22:01 (SRV section)

Quick reminder for those that haven't spotted this ... the latest leaderboards can be found in post #2.
