Noob question about on foot missions.

Hi Folks,

With 435 hrs in EDO, I have a quick noob question that I have been avoiding asking for months because its just so frustrating and I haven't been able to locate any clear guide online.

As previously mentioned I feel missions are too risky and have too low of a reward. The time involved in traveling, patiently stalking the base, the myriad of possible fup's... I inevitably fail with 90% of on foot mission types and end up returning to base in the hopes of being a conflict zone rent boy in return for some shameless credits. However.. I have come to realize that to upgrade my gear I realistically need to do on foot missions for the needed goods & plus I WANT to do missions, I just find them frustrating at the moment as their mechanics seem a little vague in some on foot mission types.

My main frustration with missions (other than me being an impatient s***) however is that many missions, especially the assassination missions, come with the caveat that you must not set off alarms or be discovered. I love the idea of assassination missions, but what absolutely ruins it for me is that I am completely unable to assassinate a target without getting a bounty and having the whole base telepathically know about it. I have checked guides online and the rest of it, but I am still unable to find out the method in which to assassinate a target and escape without anybody knowing. I do know how to turn off the alarm, but its so tedious and the risk of getting caught just makes it a big waste of time.

I see that originally people were using their tool to zap enemies but it was stopped. I have managed to snipe people in the head and this didn't set off any alarm, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason behind why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

So my question is..... How do you (can you?) assassinate people on foot without anybody knowing.

You can still zap enemies as a silent means of dispatching a foe. Use this if you don't have any weapons with installed silencer mods.

The thing with the cosmic police telepathically knowing you offed a dude on the dark side of some planet at the rear-end of universe is just a "feature" and your observation about it being tedious and a waste of time is kind of just "how it is." So, you have to make do.

You can either be confident with popping the target in such a way you will not have any witnesses (other than said omnipotent bounty-givers) and can scoot your way off-base without crossing a guard's path, or you go the tedious route of disabling the alarms that way you can just eradicate anyone who looks at you. That's basically the gameplay loop, for better or worse.

Edit, for just in case it wasn't clear: You cannot avoid getting a bounty when killing a person who is in a lawful system and is not a target of your mission.

There are at least three ways:
  1. Use weapons with the Audio Masking (for outside) or Noise Suppressor (for inside buildings) to make quiet kills. These go best on weapons that can drop most unshielded enemies with a single shot, such as an Executioner or Tormentor (when upgraded); occasionally these weapons can be purchased at various Pioneer Supplies stores with these mods already installed. Be aware that other NPCs can still see you killing someone / see the body and retaliate / investigate. They won't set the alarms off if they just see a body... which, frankly, is a bit silly.
  2. Kill the NPCs quickly before they can set off the alarm. The entire Settlement won't immediately know that you killed someone despite the bounty notification - NPCs will hear unsuppressed gunshots and come investigate first. If they are alerted to your presence, then you are in danger of the alarms going off. However, you can tell who is about to set the alarms off by watching for an animated orange radio popup over an NPC; when you see it, find the NPC and either drop their shields, damage their health or kill them to stop the alarms from going off. If you're fast enough, you can drop an entire Settlement in this manner without needing to turn the alarms off first.
  3. Use an E-Breach (obtainable in Anarchy stations or on some Fleet Carriers - EDIT: also in Communist stations, per Rat Catcher's post below) to break into the building with the alarms, find someone with at least a Level 2 ID and rush the alarms panel. Once they're off, you are free to make as much noise as you like :D

Be more selective with the missions that you pick. Do shedloads of the easy ones and build up your gear (buying G3 is a start). Fetch/deliver items, salvage and reactivate/restore missions are the ones to do. Avoid the theft/heist/assassinate/eliminate settlements until you have better skills. Be free with dumb fire missiles and use a SRV. Listen out and be prepared to run at the first sound of an incoming ship.

Something cool happened when I took a taxi to an assassination mission. I managed to off the target but had to run on foot into the wilderness to call my taxi but it ended up parking about half a mile away and I was running out of suit power... What was cool was that when it ran out I thought, well that's that but then an emergency power kicked in and even when that ran out, I still had a minute extra and I literally was passing out but made it just in time to the taxi! Really nice mechanics, very immersive.

Thank you for the suggestions Guys! I think I'm going to stick it out with the easy missions and build up my gear, hopefully that will give me the edge to be more deadly / stealthy for assassination missions and so on. I'm going to try and get the noise suppressor which seems like it will help a good deal, luckily Siris is two jumps away from my home system where the eng is based to provide the suppressor.

Umm, you forgot to mention that 5-10 minute shuttle ride from detention back to your ship after most fails!
Talk about fun gameplay!

That's neither... :p
Just a single jump from the slammer to most systems in Colonia... The bubble is much overrated IMO.

Plus, of course, if you hand yourself in from the ship menu, you take the ship with you to the prison facility.

Pretty much every mission I do involves me cutting into the power centre and capping the tech (suppressed plasma pistol FTW).

Usually there's the alarms panel in there. If not, steal that guys creds and walk into the command centre. You can usually get to the alarm panel in most command buildings fairly easily once you know where to look. Or just use the screen with your L3 creds and flag it.

You just need to disable the alarms to ensure that they aren't set off. That way, even if you do get spotted something bad you won't fail the mission. Then either kill the one guy you came for and leave - or murder everyone and eat the notoriety, but get all the loot - your choice.

See, this is a problem because when you're starting out and trying to learn the game via trial and error and things go bad... that isn't an option.

I play games for fun, and EDO has made me realize that I also play games to PLAY GAMES. Being forced to sit passively and stare at the screen for any length of time is not playing a game.

This is a prime example of what people mean when they say FDev doesn't respect their time. I have very limited time to play games and I'm really not inclined to waste it riding in an Apex shuttle. I play this game because I like flying spaceships not riding in them.

This could be avoided by simply impounding my ship and sending it to the prison barge (at my expense) so that I can fly it back to where I want to be.
