Thanks Frontier

Just wanted to take a moment to say to the ED team at Frontier "Thank you for your efforts building this game for me to enjoy".

I have been out of the game for a few years and only just recently decided to play again. I had been keeping an eye on development of the game via newsletters and a bit of Obsidian Ant reporting and felt genuine sadness to hear about how bad Odyssey was at launch and at seeing the community of players and developers stressed in the ensuing negative atmosphere.

After installing Oyssey I jumped straight in without configuring or anything. I found myself on a planet being introduced to new mechanics through a polished guided mission. My frame rate was appalling but my god was I engaged.

After a beautifully immersive shuttled flight to a nearby planetary port I walked into my first concourse. The lift doors opened and "wow" directly in front of me was a pair of NPCs sitting inside each other on the same seat but the atmosphere was beautiful. It felt like I was in a reality halfway between Firefly and the Expanse.

Since this initial impression I have restarted with a clean save and really like the new character creation system and general on-boarding experience. I have had a go at some of the new mining and scanning mechanics—there weren't even limpets the last time I played. I've done a bit of Conflict Zone fighting, some trading, and started trying to wrap my head around the new Galaxy Map. I have also played with my settings a bit and now have the on-foot stuff performing to a more satisfactory level without sacrificing too much in visual quality—that said clearly this is an area that needs major work.

All in all I am loving where the game is going and the features added by Odyssey have really upped the immersion level. Keep up the good work Frontier.

Off the shores of Orion, the Pleiades, and so on while messing around in sci-fi spaceships. It's been good times regardless of whatever else that hasn't been polished, optimized, or implemented so far. No other game nor astronomy space sim has put a place to the names in my mind as well, and I'll always be grateful for that every time I look up at the night sky. (y)

Madness, I say, madness

Not-so funny funniness aside, I agree. Carry on FD, our wayward ehh developer. Beautiful game (on its best) and still after 6500hrs I amhaving a lot of fun doing everything there is to do here.
Key words : bugfixes and featuresmoothing

Now ,where did I misplace that spyware

That cannot be right!
I have been watching the night sky since I was a kid, showing planets, stars and nebulae to friends and family, while telling the names and some facts about them.
Since ED, however, I just point at the Pleiades and shout "Thargoids!".

Morning!

Having a great time in Odyssey. Finally got myself a carrier. Opened a bar.

A large number of us have been engaged in a pitched battle defending a bunch of systems against a marauding player group for the last 3 months. Across all platforms, from space CZ's to mission running to on foot Odyssey zones. A whole pile of player groups engaged on both sides in open, PG and solo.

Banter has been excellent, and the challenge has been hard work but rewarding (both financially AND in terms of combat ranks).

Between wars, been taking the time to sort out a bit more engineering for the weapons... And a smidge of mining to upgrade the carrier.

All in all, having a total riot still.

It's a good thing to be grounded by someone's nostalgia. And then to immerse themselves in the here & now. Playing oddity is a Gamers dream.... almost.
Oddity didn't go well at launch.
To date it's lost. Somewhere between 2 games.
I'm sure there's a huge chunk missing. Base building perhaps. Powerplay 2.0 too. And a revamp of the bgs.
A rework of multiplay/crew.
Open only mode for those who choose to do so once in can't change.
Too many carriers
VR no longer supported.
Consoliers kicked in the teeth too. No longer supported.
Let's not forget mac users. No longer supported.
Its been a long hard road...
Legacy issues still prevalent. Fdev silences still the norm.
I could go on and on....(must plug grappling hooks)
For all its bugs it's issues it's p2p crap so on so forth, l love this game. I play in 4k vr and its stunning 😍 ✨
No other game holds a candle to it.

Fair enough, but I mean in proportional 3D space getting a feel for where things are and traveling between them, Sol system planets not withstanding, leastwise since I don't have a permit in-game. 🙃

Tell me about that. One of the first things I did in this game was to draw the Plough (or whatever people call the famous asterism in Ursa Major) with my travel history on the Galaxy Map, to see how it looks in 3D.
I obtained the permit to Alioth specifically for this reason!

That's a little unfair, you have just as much VR as you did in Horizons/Beyond. In fact, they didn't want to put VR in Odyssey at all but they changed their mind thanks to people in the community. It's just you don't get it on-foot.

The external cam works perfectly in VR, on foot. Technically, there is no reason for 2D pancake, but well.

And the Horizons content in EDO VR is better than anything anyway. To me, playing Horizons is a definite downgrade since Update 10, it's too bright, lacks detail and looks washed out. YMMV.

O7,

Whilst we don't get it on foot that's true, I refer to their (fdev) themselves saying they'll no longer "develop" VR for oddity.
Which we all found a bit weird. Because it's as you rightly pointed out, already in place.
So we're assuming they won't patch it repair it or remove that Periscope thing in favour of a better on foot experience.
Locomotive aspect aside I get it their in a hard place there.
Anyone thats ever played vr on foot will tell you it's in no way an advantage in say pvp. In fact the opposite.
We cmdrs don't wanna have to get out of our chairs grab a couple of controllers and a plastic armour lite with rear n fore sights etc etc ..
If they cracked that walnut I'm sure vr on foot would be insanely good...pvp aside

Nice one OP.

It’s a bit dated now, but if I may shamelessly quote myself from 2014, I think this still fits…

Elite: Desiderata

Dock placidly amid the chaos and haste, and remember what peace there may be in the starport hangar. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all commanders.

Post on the forum courteously and clearly; and listen to others, even the new and the inexperienced; they too have their input.

Avoid impatient and aggressive players, they are vexations to the gameplay. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser commanders than yourself.

Enjoy your trading runs as well as your combat engagements. Keep interested in your own pilot career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of the game.

Exercise caution in your trade decisions; for the market is now full of fluctuations. But let this not blind you to what credit accumulation there is; many commanders strive for high profits; and everywhere gameplay is full of richness.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign comradery. Neither be cynical about Anaconda owners; for in the face of all envy and suspicion they are really not code hackers.

Take kindly the counsel of the Alpha backers, gracefully surrendering the things of noobness.

Nurture skills of power management to shield you in sudden collisions. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and constant interdictions.

Beyond constructive criticism, be gentle with the developers. You are a tester of the game, no less than the Alpha backers; you have a right to play. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the procedurally-generated galaxy is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with Frontier Developments, whatever you conceive them to be, and whatever your credit acquisition and mission completion rate, in the noisy confusion of the starport keep peace with your spacecraft. With all its bugs, ganking, and broken netcode, it is still a beautiful game. Be cheerful. Strive to be Elite!

With apologies to Max Ehrmann.

Ups and downs throughout the years, but no other game captivated me for around 5000 hours. No other game was good enough for me to buy it 4 times (damn you for no multiple Cmdr slots!). No other game provided me with such a realistic "being there" feeling in VR. And no other game allowed me to adventure in so realistically depicted Milky Way.

I mean, there are surely other games and programs that are better than Elite at this or that, but there are no other games that do everything that Elite does in this way.

Amazing piece of software engineering. Looking forward to what the future holds!

EDIT - Actually, one more thing - I've been gaming all my life, since the 8-bit era, and no other game allowed me to be a part of such an amazing and incredible community that Elite has. With one exception of the early days of World of Warcraft, where I've also met some amazing people.
