Lets talk Biom Packs

Sooo... One is not a series, but for the fun of it: Lets consider biome packs the new route. Wetlands seems a bit more unspecific than the biomes we currrently have in game, to be fair. And I'm terribly bad in naming others. Maybe we should better call them ecosystems? What do you think, what might we get?
I'm now guessing on a desert pack for summer, maybe.

Desert Pack sounds reasonable and a very logical continuation of this theme for summer. I can also really imagine them doing a Mountain Pack (with maybe some height tool additions in the free update) and a Tropical Pack. The one thing I would love about this type of packs is that it's much more difficult to predict and would grant us a diverse roster of animals from all across the globe.

I think easy bets are: Desert, Rainforest, Grassland and Taiga (Especially since PZ Taiga includes Mountains)

Maybe after all those one temperate to round up all loose ends

Rainforest: Almost certainly. Gives us gibbons, sloths, more monkeys. All things we desperately need.
Desert: Almost certainly. Fits the "summer" dlc quite well, and we still have few desert animals. Coatimundi, addax, hamadryas baboon etc.
Grasslands. Almost certainly. Just a really easy theme to make, and so many animals fit into it. Wombat, tassie devil, maned wolf, olive baboon etc.
Islands: Highly probable. A fun theme that people often ask for. Helps for any Oceania animals as well as the fossa from Madagascar.
Taiga: Highly probable. There are still some cold weather animals we're missing out on, and alpine animals we're missing out on.

Temperate forest and tundra: Highly doubtful. Tundra is too niche and temperate forest has gotten a lot of animals between NA and EU packs and has good representation.

The last one I could maybe see is coastlines. I would love it, but won't hold out hope.

Rainforest and/or desert are prolly the most likely imo, although I would love a savanna/grassland pack (maned wolves!).
Islands would be so neat and allow for a lot of unique species (I really want some New Zealand critters lol).

Either way I'm so excited to see what this year holds for the game, whether its more biome/ecosystem packs or not!

Riiiight? Makes the whole year quite more exciting. :)

I love all your speculations. Only thing I'd say, looking at the Wetland pack, they might be a bit to "strong"? As much as I'm happy about the ASCO and the Community Favourites the Capybara and PLatypus and the Crane. I also feel like the 120 antilope, the caiman and the water buffalo are not the strongest picks. So your animal picks are probably what we need, but maaaybe not what we get?
I'm super anxious about the monkey situation. Rainforest need so many, but I doubt we might get even two in one pack.

It is a bit interesting that this biome pack isn't based on a biome we actually have in the game. Makes me think that they are more likely to go for themes that can cover a few biomes at once. Like combining grassland and desert in one and call it the drylands (where have i heard that before?) animal pack or similar, making it the counterpart to this one.

I also think that the fact they didn't use an in-game biome means they are up to more "creative" pack titles and themes and I really like that perspective.
I can think of Rainforest, Desert, Grassland, Mountains, maybe also Islands, Forests ... But since they might not stick to biomes exclusively I can also imagine Nocturnal or something like that.

If there's any merit to the vague pattern of --
Spring - warm and wet
Summer - warm and dry
Autumn - temperate
Winter - cold (a bit flimsy since the Aquatic Pack had two Amazon animals...)

then next could be either a desert or grassland pack. Or they could do one more regional scenery pack with the Middle East, though that theming might overlap with what they did for North Africa.

I think one of the best news about this biome pack is that we'll certainly have other biome packs, imo AT LEAST 3 new ones to let the time to the "biome pack" to become a pattern. It's very exciting for the future.

Since "Wetlands" isn't an in-game biome, I think future "biome" packs will take a similar naming approach.
  • Summer- Scrublands Pack (Desert + Grassland)
  • Fall - Forests Pack (Temperate + Tropical)
  • Winter - Mountains Pack (Mainly Taiga, some elements of Tundra)

@Swjosdotschka dont you said something about frontier focusing on new mechanics after regional packs? All new animals according to steam use new bathing system.
I imagine tropical rainforest pack being focused on climbing animals alongside hanging upside down mechanic.

Something with a sky or soemthing to introduce flying would also be cool. Not only birds, but maybe sugar gliders (I know they don't fly) bats or some other good jumping / almost flying animals.

There was this rumour flying around, yes. But I feel like they all use bathing behaviour because it's the wetlands and they didn't choose wetlands because they wanted to introduce bathing. But for the sake of it, besides flying, what other behaviours might we get?

Came to my mind as well, I was just unable to name it. This principle could also work with a focus on climbing.
