OA's latest on future story.

I guess this sample was an reminder on why elite was so appealing in the first place.

The curiosity is how did this amazing theme turned into a clone of mass effect andromeda? It should be interesting to see the colorful suits and bubble guns merge into this. Without changing odd they'll probably have to give thargoids blue skin.

Also for the people who only joined in Odd and Beyond, when this was the latest patches in elite, you can imagine how the feeling in the air around elite was very different :)

tl;dr game was on a good thing, then FC's and Odd (coincidentally perhaps, i'd concede) seemed to derail it. Yep.

I guess this sample was an enjoyable reminder from not having seen this on why elite was so appealing in the first place.
I'm under the impression that FD was holding back on advancing the Thargoid storyline because of all the issues they were having trying to port Odyssey to consoles. Now that they've admitted that they just cannot do it, I'm hoping they can push this all forward (which is what I believe OA was hoping would happen). There have been hints here and there about signals and such pointing to a star system in the COL 70 Sector. It was as if they were trying to lead us in that direction but had to wait for Console updates to take place.

I do feel bad for console players, but at the same time I'm hopeful that FD can now move forward with the Thargoid story, possibly different types of planets to land on, etc. They only need to concentrate on PC development at this point, so it's just a case of raw computing power in the development department. Now, since FD only needs to concentrate on just one platform, it's time to put 4 pips to computing.

The Thargoid story was gathering pace then suddenly stopped.
It may save this game to advance onwards as the big story no longer exists.

We've had a "thargoid" symbol for a type of mission that never appear in Odyssey, ever since release. Claiming Thargoid are planned for ground is hardly the most dangerous bet possible :D

I don't know if it's just planned, or was a cut feature like many others, known or otherwise. As a reminder, nearly half the engineering material for Odyssey have no use. Some are only used once to unlock engineers.
For example, we have a few anti xeno related items. Or unrelated, a ship, srv and building schematics. Which is interesting considering suit and weapon schematics are used for engineering of their relative item, but those aren't used at all.
Do OA know more about what´s come than one can find under the News and Bulletins section of this forum? Or is this another attempt to regurgitate the existing trivia sugarcoated with a soothing voice and pre-recorded visuals from 2016?
OA when he was positive toward ED : "I like that guy"
OA when Yamicks was refused an odyssey key : "I like that guy !"
OA when he is afraid for ED future and the direction it's turning : "I really don't like that guy".

I guess everyone's entitled to their opinion, but only if I agree.

I think you're on the money there Leadfoot. FD have brought in some new content since the derailed launch but I reckon it's been heck of a lot slower than they were anticipating to before launch. Hopefully the rest of what they have to bring to the game (including on foot Thargoids) is still on cards.

Honestly, I'm completely flummoxed about where the story is going right now. The PERFECT time was about 6 months ago. Salvation had just shown up, Aegis was collapsing, the NMLA threat was bigger than ever, the Alliance Election was a mess, and Hudson was causing a mess with Yuri Grom and his surveillance laws.

Cut to the modern day and Aegis is gone(But nothing bad has happened), the alliance is basically back to standard political drama, the NMLA are all wrapped up, the Emperor is back without fanfare, most of Hudson's drama is swept under the rug, and Salvation is funding peaceful mining operations. All the drama has been allowed to just peter out.

You could totally have brought everything to a perfect climax, before. Reveal the NMLA and the Lords of Restoration, but have them attempt to seize power rather than being effortlessly eliminated. This starts a civil war in the Empire. Hudson attempts to take advantage of this and starts an invasion of the Empire, but overplays his hand and his dictatorial tendencies end up with his own civil war. At the same time, the Alliance, politically divided, threatens to fracture, and amidst the turmoil, Aegis collapses as its funding is cut off.

In the midst of all of this, Salvation fires his superweapon, wiping out the Pleiades and calling down a MASSIVE invasion of thargoids into the Alliance. The Alliance attempts to fight them off, but with Aegis defunct and many members refusing to send help, they are rapidly pushed back. They appeal to the Empire and Federation, but in the meantime Patreus and Torval have launched a counter-invasion into Federation space, and with the various wars going on, neither Superpower has the ability to reinforce them.

THEN you can bring in the missing emperor; have the players move to find her secret location! Every week, narrow the possible location a little bit, even as the thargoids push deeper and deeper into the bubble. Only she has the power and will to end the ridiculous war.

Of course, even with her returned, it will take time to work out a treaty that will allow the various Powers to agree to contribute much of their might, leaving their home systems defenseless. At the last moment, with the Alliance Armada under attack, you can have the Empire and Federation swoop in to save the day! Drive the thargoids back and emerge victorious!

Of course, if the players fail at too many things, it might seem hopeless. In that case, players would need to supply Salvation with enough thargoid materials to build a better superweapon, obliterating the thargoids but also wiping out all human inhabitation from the infested systems. A pyrrhic victory, by any means, but at least humanity would remain, licking their wounds and waiting for the next attack.

Hm, can't be bothered to watch a video. Is there some other way for him to communicate his doom saying? Like an open letter of some sort maybe?

This most recent phase of GalNet has done a good job of properly utilising the stuff that's already in the game, but yeah, it's still pretty bad without proper dev support like it used to have.

Hell, I probably overrate their reuse of assets only because it's a bit better than when GalNet was in a managed decline or just shutdown entirely. Remember the Lucifier Device plotline? Hoo boy.

Are you sure these 'quotes' are coming from the same person?

There is no future for elite... DOOM!!!!one11!!

I'll hazard a guess that OA's video is the normal fence sitting, which is not an issue, but as he is at least a uninformed as anyone else outside of the decision makers at frontier, the best he might do is consider what might be, without - at any point - giving the impression that 'something specific' will come to pass.

He's amicable enough, for sure, but that is all.

and Salvation is funding peaceful mining operations
...admittedly, as cover for collection of yet another vast pile of Guardian materials. Hopefully that goes somewhere interesting.

I suspect part of the problem with putting together that sort of dramatic story is the fact that - collectively - the players tend to act in the direction of stabilising established powers and defenders. So if you want to set up some giant crisis, it's very difficult to involve the players along the way because they'll tend to act to stop it. But if they're not involved along the way, they're less likely to care at the end either.

(The recent events in Reorte I think are interesting in that perspective, though - Sirius involvement in the Alliance is clearly going to cause problems later, but the only way players could have stopped it would also have been bad for the Alliance. More of that sort of choice might be able to get players to contribute to setting up a disaster as well as resolving it)

I suspect the delays have messed up quite a lot and not just the Thargoid story.

The story started up again in September 2020, at a time when Odyssey was going to be released in December 2020 (or maybe it had been announced as early 2021?). Then it slipped to mid-2021, then mid-2021 (consoles autumn 2021), then consoles sometime later, then finally just now consoles never.

Capabilities that they expected to have for in-game events by a particular date have probably repeatedly failed to arrive.

Honestly, the game was 'on a good thing' until they decided to chase the console cash. That's where it all went pear shaped from my POV.

They'd put a lot of placeholders in the game in the first instance which we put up with early doors, because we presumed they had every intention of fleshing those out (& they probably did, to be fair). Then they did the console thing which fragmented development/priorities & there weren't enough resources/bods/hours in the day to do anything justice, really.

There's not an ounce of doom saying in his video, imo. Here's a summary (probably not a very good one):

The story in Elite used to add significant in-game content such as Guardian sites, Thargoid bases, and all that jazz.

After 2018 this seemed to tone down, likely because of Odyssey development.

Nowadays the story in Elite is exclusively text based and revolves around GalNet articles, and community goals.

David Braben's statement after console development was canned was to say that Frontier needs the games story to move forward.

The question is, does this imply that console development was hampering the progress of significant story additions like we used to see? Now that it has been canned, OA hopes that we will finally get long awaited story additions, such as Thargoid motherships, and on foot Thargoid troops etc. He then asks for his viewers opinions on the matter.

That's pretty much it.
