Do Rare goods still suck?

Limited purchase potential on any given visit. Have to be carried far from where they generate. Significantly take more time than just schlepping a quick Python/T9 load a few jumps over for huge profit.

Are they still sucky? Fdev probably haven't touched them in a while
I did the math recently, and rares could have their profits buffed 10x and only be competitive with other trading. So yeah, they're pretty bad.

Rares trading was how I got my start as a trader in ED (in the second half of 2016).

It would take you all over the Bubble, following "London Underground" style maps that players had published. I built up my stake in the game till I could afford a T7, at which point loop trading became more profitable - but, frankly, far less fun.

Frontier can't really be blamed for the death of Rares trading. Just as players' "London Underground" maps made Rares trading efficient, so players' publication of Road to Riches route lists saw that replace Rares trading as the meta for early-game credit earning.

Same for me, begun trading about the same time in a Cobra doing the 'Rares loop'.
I may even do it again just for the memories (it certainly won't be for the credits). :)

Shame FDev don't add some new more profitable rares at settlements for cmdrs to discover.

Yes.

For trading, your best bet is either to use EDDB or Inara for a good place to trade, or the PTN discord/reddit, the various FC discord/reddit for unload and loading said FC.
Be aware that you don't get trade xp for selling to a FC, but you get it by buying from it and selling to NPC.

The credits you can make from rares are simply outdated by a few orders of magnitude. The "balance pass" that was going in late 2020 hasn't been resumed yet - I think it would've been a great opportunity to address rare trades.

As others have said, rares pretty much suck for profit.

Still, there's something much more appealing about having a hold full of Geawen Dance Dust instead of "narcotics" Lavian Brandy or Eranin Pearl Whisky instead of "liquor" and so on.

So i still fill up the Bliss with them sometimes and do the 7 or 8 jumps jumps to max out the resell price.

And I'm sure you went to school every morning in all kind of weather and had an orange for Christmas. I heard those stories already ^^
I had Scalextric and Lego for Christmas most years (and don't particularly like oranges) but I can tell you that in the North West of England (in the Pennine foothills, not an area noted for clement weather conditions) my school was closed for exactly one day due to weather in the seven years between 1982 and 1989. It's not a meme, it's hilarious that they close the schools as soon as three flakes of snow hit the ground these days.

As for rares trading though, it's still viable right at the start of the game - it's what I did to earn the credits for an Asp on my alt account and that was only about a year ago. With the way the game throws credits at you these days though, it's something to do if you want to do it, it's certainly not the most efficient way to make credits at any point.

I really enjoyed the Rare runs when it first came out. It was the first thing that made me really venture across the bubble. But they nerfed it pretty quick and I've never been back to rares aside from the odd few needed to unlock engineers.
