Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Having limped back to the bubble in my banged up DBX, I handed in ~7.5 mil of exploration data plus another 6 of genomics, and wound up straight to allied with Nagii Union, so now I need to do some research for who to turn data over to next because they were the last on my list of big player factions!

Meantime, I pulled this old girl out of mothballs and gave her a fresh coat of paint and a bit of an overhaul...

The Lonely Ghost, now re-christened to the Argent Traveller to line up with my python Argent One, courier Argent Lance, and cutter Argent Shield. Not totally stripped down like some people fly their phantoms; went for a twin SRV bay for a bit of redundancy, size 3 AFMU, and a research limpet controller just in case I find some molluscs. And some cargo space to synthesise limpets.

Choosing between collector limpets or docking computer, I actually opted for the latter because, frankly, I may well get distracted and accidentally spend several weeks in the black - at the end of which the last thing I want is to get home drunk and crash into the mailbox because I forgot how to pilot. Since I have no collectors, I've dumped the mining laser, since it's original job was to get the odd bit of iron from asteroids if needed.

So the Argent Traveller is as toothless as they come. Although she does run away quite well, since I gave her 6D engineered thrusters. Mostly these are so I don't have to give up on planets above 1g - as long as I'm cautious 😸

With a whisker over 67ly range, she doesn't quite jump as far as my DBX, but honestly, it doesn't really matter. Exploration (for me) in Odyssey is much more about landing on interesting planets than it is about going far, far, far away. Taking 1 jump out of a chain of 20 isn't important. Having thrusters big enough to handle larger words, and enough juice to boost; that might be.

Today I decided I was going to tackle the BGS. Not fix any of the niggles, oddities or leaks experienced BGS’ers may know of, just get to grips with it myself. It’s been on my list of ‘ED: Things I really should try at some point’ but I’ve always skirted around the edges of it. Today, I decided I’d try and flip a system.

Unfortunately I’m still in the research stage of finding a nice small, quiet system that seems amenable. I’m also trying to research whether flipping it into Anarchy is the least sensible option. Searched YouTube for an Ian Doncaster channel filled with ‘How to’ vids but came up empty :)

That's actually really good in my book.

Honestly, over 50 should be considered good enough. If I was choosing between 50 and 65 based on a minor QoL feature like dual SRVs, I'd choose 65 of course. But if you're choosing 64 vs 66, take 64. It's fine, have the QoL. If you aren't planning an expedition to the galactic rim where actually you might just find the next jump is 1ly beyond you range, it doesn't matter. Taking 2% less jumps to get to Sag A* doesn't really matter. It's a big number either way, and there are so many stars you won't get stuck.

I was tempted by A rated thrusters, but big landable planets in EDO tend to be vacuum worlds, which I'm not very interested in. Might do them if they have a cool view. I'm not actually sure I've seen anything above 0.5g with life on it...

Having a carrier - not exactly a thing for newcomers, I'll admit although this thread now seems to be acceptable for discussing them in the new players' zone - has changed the face of exploration for me.

When I bought my first proper exploration ship, an AspX, I went all out for jump range. I did the 5,000 lys in it to unlock the engineer. Heady times.

These days, I jump the carrier, explore stuff that may be of interest within 50 light years, go back to the FC, then jump it again. It's not very often I'll even make a 50ly jump in my ship so I can get away with a non-meta explorer. This opens up the possibility of using non-traditional explorer type ships.

I loved having a Carrier for exploration for exactly the reasons you state. My favourite build became a Cobra MKIII chock full of HRPs, x4 SRVs, and a 4A shield. Perfect for careless landings on higher G worlds (ok, not that careless) and wanton hooning around on planet surfaces.

The Carrier allowed me much more freedom than I expected.
