Guide / Tutorial Don't forget a cargo rack before collecting your Meta-Alloy for engineering!

I learned this the hard way. I didn't realize that any collected items of weight with your SRV, get transferred to the ship when boarding! So if you have no cargo rack in your ship, then you can't board with the SRV!! This doesn't appear to be the case with "normal" minerals you scoop up though (Sulfer, Iron, Carbon, etc. . .)

But don't panic, as frustrating / annoying as it may be. Before heading all the way back home to pick up a cargo rack, use the eddb.io website to locate a station close to your current location. You can even filter the search for stations that have cargo racks for sale. I happened to find a station just a bit over 9 Ly away from me, and I'm now currently waiting for one of my cargo racks that I had in storage to be transferred (45 mins. I didn't feel like buying something new that I already had in storage).

Anyway, just wanted to mention this for anyone just getting into collecting items to unlock engineering. Carry on. . .

The reason why you can't keep cargo in an SRV when it is on your ship is the SRV folds itself up to save space in its hanger so the cargo space goes away.

The materials minerals etc are not stored in the normal way on your ship or SRV but are somehow always with your commander wherever they are it is said by some that the technology of pockets has become sufficiently advanced others say it is magic, who can tell.

As modules are always sold at the price paid for them I generally by new and sell the old remotely unless they are engineered or awkward to obtain.

Yep. Important tip. Fit cargo racks if you want to carry cargo. Fit CR cargo racks if you want to carry corrosive cargo (hint: this may be happening soon)
