Elite dangerous forums - robbing you of discovery joy?

I think everyone would agree that ED as a game is about exploration, discovery. Finding new planets, stations, new races, landing into the uknown. Looking for that one upgrade and finally finding it.

What I realized is forums actually rob us of this experience. Someone comes along and says "Hey, I've just been to SOL and this is what I have found". Or "OMG I just met new alien race!" On one hand I do enjoy reading people discussing the game development, etc, but sometimes I feel that by not reading them I would be rewarded/be surprised by the game more.

What do you think?

I know what you mean we need to use the spoiler tag more maybe to keep some mystery while sharing

but im sure come release we will all have enough space to make our own discoveries and bring them back for bragging rights without spoiling it as there is more than even hundreds of thousands patiently scanning every thing they come across can exhaust any time soon:D

Yes, it would be nice if there was a spoilers forum to post such things. But I tend to avoid reading such post in any case.

We're meeting fellow commanders in the space-station bars and swapping info. RPG imagination, geezer. ;)

Oh gee. Big surprise. You ascribe personal responsibility that you should command yourself on others.

Don't want to know, don't read.

As another poster remarked, personal responsibility.

Why are we responsible for you?

This. Personal responsibility.

Yes, but there's always subject lines which you read anyway - they're unavoidable

I do not ascribe personal responsibility onto noone. I am trying to raise awareness that sometimes a tag "SPOILERS!" would help.

Not needed, neither is your snark. Go complain about life parameters everyone else can manage unlike yourself somewhere else.

Thank you Commander. Your inabilty to recognize what distresses you is a telling story. As is your hostile tone. Need help undocking?

I'm guilty of ruining games a little by reading up on them too much. I'm trying to stop, it's a bad habit! Totally killed Skyrim for me. :)

Bit rude.

I don't see this as being an issue once the whole universe is opened up. Quite the reverse we will never be able to see everything so I would welcome information on particularly interesting sites.

The size of the playable area is literally totally unique feature of the game and will completely knock this issue on the head.

Yes, subject lines are unavoidable... they are also often your spoiler warning. Yes, 'spoiler' tags might indeed help those who are not capable of making their own minds up about whether to carry on reading or not. But this is where personal responsibility comes in... instead of making others responsible for protecting your galactic innocence. Finally, no need for the snarky comment at the end.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the forums after the full release. I would imagine it will be full of people at first but after that will the user base drop off as people actually play the game, rather than talk about it? I guess we also need to see what form the in-game media takes and by that I mean stuff like gal-net and message boards because that will also contain "spoilers".

Really? I am not his mum. I am not his keeper. Nor butler, nor nanny or even a paid janitor. Remind me, O wise euclydian why we as internet perusers must champion and guard someone from being exposed to something they might not like?

In fact who am I to decide what Mr. Helpless may like or not? Are you suggesting that I should decide what they should watch or read. Maybe instead they can decide for themselves.

His initial post is questioning at the end if he should read the forum, nothing to do with you using it. Reading comprehension? :)

If there's something I want to explore or find out about myself, I avoid threads about such content.
Sometimes the thread title says too much already, but that cannot be avoided.

To OP: don't read stuff. It may have been mentioned but the forums are more akin to the pilot's lounge at an airport where you may sit around and share tales about places you've been, or cargo you may have carried.

I worry more about solo offline and crackers

How many crackers can you fit in your mouth and still talk though? It's not so bad with cream cheese on them as they add moisture, but completely dry is a great challenge! Ruins your voice attack though.... Anyway, I'd be more worried about having enough hobnobs for the Journey to the centre of the Universe... Hobnobs >> crackers!

Thread titles with 'Spoiler Alert' in them and posts using the spoiler tags will all help, sure you can avoid certain threads/titles but sometimes they can be cryptic to say the least. Would be nice if the mods could chuck some spoiler tags/titles around too as and when but I realise they have their hands full already. Of course, nobody is 'responsible' for what I see/read but I do get the impression that some folks enjoy revealing things that they know should be encased in spoiler tags, they enjoy that 'I was famous for five seconds on the interwebz moment', some even strive for it, don't get it myself, but each to their own.
