ObsidianAnt: Frontier - What The HECK Is Going On With Elite Dangerous?

I doubt anyone at edcd who make your favourite tools got an egg either.. i will check. Not that I actually want an egg.

I want an Easter egg, but only if it's quality dark chocolate! But yeah, FDev generally only seems to recognise the work of the most popular YouTubers. Yet, arguably, it's all the folks who build and maintain the third-party tools, databases, resources and wikis who've contributed most to the community.

A fairly reliable indicator of the state of a game is usually hopping on the forums and see if there's mainly singular focused toxic people left on them.

If this thread is anything to go by then sheesh.... :(

The vid; he makes decent points, nothing toxic, rather a sum of all actions explained nicely.

OA living in the forum nerds heads rent free. Typical, they only turned on him when his videos became more critical and don't suit the whiteknight narrative. Fdev are bad at communication compared to other companies and anyone that thinks otherwise is clearly deluded. OA has remained fairly neutral over the years, it's the whiteknights that hold the obvious bias.

No criticisms are allowed by anyone. Fdev are held as this god-like entity. This forum is becoming more and more like the Star Citizen subreddit and I'm not liking it.
The righteous indignation of a certain few has become downright comical. Almost makes me want to rename my fleet carrier to Obsidian Orbital just for the reaction 🤭

It has been refreshing to see others finally pushing back against the vitriol and cyberbullying that this little motorcycle SRV gang has been getting away with for way too long. That alone has made this thread worth it.

OA's video seemed to summarize the situation is a pretty balanced way to me. I think he's doing the community a service here - certainly, opinions expressed is a calm and measured are likely to get FDev's attention far better than, say, Latvian histrionics.

Balanced?
When he spends 11 minutes criticizing FDev and spending 30 seconds mentioning that Elite and FDev is not actually without a praise (new srv, carriers interiors, streams etc)? Right!

I'd rather have FDev being mostly silent, but maintaining Elite so i can still play it whenever i want, than going CIG ways of verbal diarrhea while selling a mess of an alpha game for the last 8 years

But the community managers are not maintaining Elite, so how would an increase in communication on their part stop the game's maintenance?

FWIW, the only communication I'm personally interested in right now is regarding the future of Horizons. I think that's a pretty big deal (whether or not Horizons will become Odyssey Lite), right up there with the console announcement, because that decision directly affects "maintaining Elite so i can still play it whenever i want".

Not mentioning the new streams is an act of mercy.

Poor Arthur had to apologise yet again for the complete lack of any news on account transfers or upcoming features and with fear in their eyes the CMs had to move onto yet another explanation of how Twitch drops work.

I removed my subscription to his doom and gloom video's six months ago. The only reason i see this one is because someone promoted it on here for him. The only videos i am now subscribed to are those from the Burr Pit
What you say is, for me at least (for example Buur for me is more of a friend of frontier, and friends never criticise friends) , a confirmation of my personal belief that youtubers are not as much "influencers" as people might think, but more of someone who give a somewhat coherent speech that people can rally or identify with. Which makes this thread, and many more, a simple debate of two groups of people : those who think the game is in bad shape and those who don't all you need is to rally whomever "influencers" speak your mind. Of course, in every group there are people who goes a bit further into subject, being more or less "passioned" of it. I mean it cant be that 300k people that watch OA are all pending to buy odyssey and he influnces them into not to buy.... People just choose the voice that resonates with them.

Seeing Frontier sent the Ant a lovely Easter Egg with a lovely thank you note, it's fairly obvious that Frontier think OA is a valuable friend.

I've been a supporter of ED since the kickstarter campaign (I contributed then with a few hundreds Pounds) and LOVE this game that is now a part of my life.... but I must say I totally agree with OA... I hate that we tend to think that everyhing in life is about picking a side, you are in the Doom side or you are a white knight. Life is more complex that this two sided simplistic view of things. I think OA exposed very well a very complex situation. I want to feel optimistic about the future of this game again!! PLEASE FD, BE MORE OPEN AND SHOW US REGULARLY REASONS TO KEEP DREAMING!! Everytime they used to announce plans I'd go and buy ARX to say thanks, but that's something I can't do these days.

So how exactly do you form opinions without input and information, that being from Youtubers, reading books, talking to other humans etc.? You could answer that the ability to form opinions is coded into our DNA, which it probably is, but it still needs a few bits of information to work with.
Normally I'd read a product description, wouldn't you? Pretty much sums it up - but then, I have lived the majority of my life when 'social media' and youtube, twitch, etc. wasn't even a gleam in their creator's eye, it is amazing how well I have done without them.
You are wrong.
Really?
Just because you understand his service as forming opinions for others, it does not mean that it is so.
Doesn't it?
And by stating that you do two things:
1. you devalue other players, most you dont even know (that I am sure of). Implying they cant think on their own. Thats just arrogant.
Really? Are you certain I think this way?
2. you show your own prejudice and preformed opinion.
Sorry, Mum...
I always took OA videos as a nice summary of the recent development of the game and still decide on my own if I agree or not.
You do you, I'll just use my own grey matter, it works for me!

ETA: It isn't as if the youtubers are currently only regurgitating information about the game that is common knowledge... (Or spouting financial data, which again, over which the average player has no control - unless they have a few £million invested in shares, of course.)

This comes down to a few things ;-

1) Lack of communication from Fdev :- Before Christmas the communication was much better and people were reassured that despite Odyssey's bad launch, things were improving. The CM team should be commended for helping to 'change the sentiment' of the player base because combined with the update progress, things really felt on the way up. However since Christmas, the lack of communication, the bad news about consoles and the 'Odyssey Tiling Issue' have started a Doom Vortex, where if you search for any news about Elite, you just get the impression that there are unhappy players, bad mechanics and that Odyssey is not worth playing (which was true at launch but not since update 8).

2) Future content :- The thing about online games is they need to avoid the perception of being in maintenance mode. However, due the the above that's exactly what the main perception seems to be. In the restored (thankfully) livestreams, the subject seems to be about content generated by the community. It gives the impression that fdev have given all they're going to and it's up to the community to keep the game going. They keep on saying there are great things coming and they're making all these hard decisions for future of the game but then they don't talk about these future plans. A lot of people are waiting for them to put their money where their mouth is.

but it's not about that, nor is it that black and white unless you need to simplify it for yourself to that point because otherwise it makes no sense to you (signifies an underlaying problem).
