A bit off-topic but the discussion started here...I'm pretty sure it's random. With a salvo of 11 limpets i've had between 0 and 6 returns. I estimate the probability of a single limpet working as about 1 in 3.
You can see on the radar which ones are carrying something on their way back to you.
If I have another go tonight I'll keep proper statistics.
I actually wonder if this is "intended"; if a dev once thought, "Sampling Thargoids should be harder than molluscs, so I'll put in some RNG at extraction". It could be one line of code that's hard to spot, and people trying to fix it since have focused on limpet behaviour instead of noticing it.
Here are 6 consecutive results today of using a salvo of 11 research limpets (one universal controller and three size 1s). Again, I noted that you can see which ones are carrying samples on the radar. Samples are therefore lost at extraction rather than arrival back at the ship.
- 7/11 Medusa samples
- 9/11 Cyclops samples
- 5/11 Cyclops samples
- 5 /11 Cyclops samples
- 9/11 Cyclops samples
- 2/11 Cyclops samples
There may be another separate bug. Occasionally all extracting limpets fail with a message saying they're "out of range" even though they clearly aren't (I stay within about 1km).
Lastly, a "gotcha": be prepared for a Thargoid to scan one of the samples being carried back to you by a limpet. If it completes the scan it gets very angry, even if you're silent running. Well, it's understandable really.
