Is ED nearing the end of its lifespan?

I've played ED long enough to get used to the bugs. Yes, they sometimes made me rage-quit at times (invisible solar exclusion zones, etc..). I always returned after quickly calming down, so no biggie. Along with getting used to the bugs, I also developed a method of navigation in supercruise. My way of navigating relies heavily on orbit lines, which are broken on my new hardware. See https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/46983 for details (RX 6900 XT in my case). That particular issue affects all curved lines seen in space during supercruise, not just orbit lines. Instead of an occasional missing solar exclusion zone, all of them are now broken.

I did my best to adjust to odyssey. Everything (except performance) was going smoothly for me until I built this PC last summer. Although I no longer had the performance issues (compared to a pair of GTX 770's in SLI), I just couldn't deal with this last issue. It was time to move on, but I still try to stay in touch.

I've turned them all off, after years of playing I find I don't need them, planetary landing, no problem, stars, no issues, it's almost second nature now.

I don't think so. Many new players every year are discovering ED and many of them wonder and ask why this game was never mentioned by others before for such an astounding new "honeymoon" experience well worth the transaction of the pricing of the simgame now. The steamchart numbers on average not really worse than 2, 4, 6 years ago as we know the player numbers seem to sinusoidally fluctuate, and peaks higher whenever there's a new update or in anticipation of one (and many "rage-quit"-"can i haz yer stuff" cmdrs still come back anyways to see the new udpates, whether they really uninstalled, or quickly reinstalled to see it).

Maybe after 15 years of the like of Star Trek: online, or Star Wars:Galaxies(?) , it might be considered more "dead" and obsolete, but ED is effectively only 7-8 years from it's launch, so in my opionion, the "new era" of ED beginning with Odyssey has basically started since last year and I expect it to continue with whatever new updates and/or DLC's until 2029-30.

I don't remember where I saw this, but I believe Braben mentioned they have committed 2 years to bring EDO up to the standard they envisioned.

The first year is ending soon.

Any chance you can find that quote?
Yeah, that would be handy.

However, it all depends on how much income EDO brings into fdev. If the sales of EDO and it's related ARXs (ie the space suits and weapons) are positive then fdev will continue to develop the game, hopefully in a direction the community would like. Otherwise expect it to get sunset / maintenance mode in a year or so.

It's difficult to be positive when fdev themselves don't want to talk about the future of this game. But look what happened after the leak a couple of years ago, everyone was expecting full star citizen style walking around space ships and planets, NMS like base building and fps combat with thargoids. It's hard to counter that kind of expectation without spoiling what you do have lined up. Some of those features may have been dropped because it was a case of 'we'd like to but can't due to technical limitations' or simply the whole remit was too wide.

On the positive side, fdev were advertising for a new designer specifically for Elite Dangerous, they wouldn't do that if it there was no future

Honestly, who knows? Only FDEV could possibly answer that and as we've come to expect, they are saying very little.

As long a people keep playing and buying ARX, ED will continue.

I do agree with the earlier statement that it's best days are probably behind it. I can't really see another expansion / DLC on the scale of Odyssey being developed. It must have been a chastening experience for FD to have poured nearly 3 years of dev time into Odyssey given the performance / quality issues and reception it received.

Being a long time player, observing the development of ED since launch has been like watching a slow motion car crash.

For oldies, who still like physical media - I can recommend that on 4K Ulta HD Blu-ray - It has Dolby atoms etc, and is bloody marvellous
EDIT: Obviously you need a 4K Blu0-ray Player, 4K TV, Dolby Atmosphere supporting speakers etc - but even with the potentially huge outlay this can involve, I still recommend it.

I heard a ship actually take off, and go above my head !!!
EDIT:EDIT: Be prepared to suddenly re-buy a lot of your existing DVDs/ Blu-rays - If you do, make sure they / you have atoms, it's a winner

The developer has taken three or four years of work and s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d it out over eight years so looking at the game today, does it look like a game that has spent EIGHT YEARS in development? DB only ever said they wanted to go ten years on this thing, how much more development do you think they will offer over (likely) the next TWO years?
Is the game dead? Maybe not yet but is it bleeding out all over the floor?
