Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club presents: The Wiccan BeWare Race (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 3)

This was your first?? Bloody well done in that case! (y)

So here are all the occasions when some evil piece of starport vindictively jumped out in front of (and in one case behind) my poor innocent spaceship. Mr Turner you are of course free to use any of them in your forthcoming Greatest Hits (see what I did there?) compilation. :)

Thanks to everyone for a great race, and see you all next month. I'm now off in search of some unsuspecting pirates to blow up.
Good god man! You've single handedly trippled the length of my compilation!!! 😂

I was going to use the end of the 1812 finalle for the music but now I may have to use the entire damn overture!

Just wanted to say huge congratulations to the winners and podium placers. I will take 7th, again :)

A massive thanks to Sulu too for organising the race. It took a few years, but we got you into the hosts group eventually ;) You did a brilliant job!

With massive thanks to everyone who uploaded their blooper videos I'm delighted to present:

70 explosions in 12 minutes - I know right! 😂
Yep sums up Buckyball perfectly.

Cobra and the surprise Dolphin was the best, who was that? But the Anaconda and Corvette going through the tunnel was very impressive indeed!
And the ending 😅

Magnificent and hilarious. 'Surprise Dolphin' has got to become a term of reference now :ROFLMAO:
OK, here you go - as promised a fully annotated video of my best regulation Cobra run presented as something of a general guide to Buckyball Racing.

Hope folks find it useful.

Very useful, thank you. There were a couple of things that could have shaved a few seconds off for me, but one massive 'Doh!' for not manually plotting the last jump and taking two instead... 45 seconds! Can't believe it didn't cross my mind to try it... Lesson learned.

The Cobra - Dolphin Tango may have been Mine in Ninky-Nock,

Of course all expertly planned just for the video- :ROFLMAO:

To be honest it took me half the week (and some heavy hints) to do it myself. Typically if the final jump of a multi-jump route is like 5ly or something then I'll think "uh huh, I bet a manual plot with low fuel can skip one of those jumps", but here I was actually quite surprised just how much a very low fuel Cobra could skip that way. I should have known something was up with just 1t of Domestic Appliances. That wasn't in the rules for no reason.

The 'Surprise Dolphin' was me, on my second run, and first trip to jail. I watched that video at the breakfast table with my wife this morning, "Oh look, that's me. Oh, me again. And again, and another one..." :ROFLMAO: Definitely the official club video!

And thank you @Alec Turner for the Zen guide, too. I need to push my supercruise approaches harder, and now I've a better idea how to do it, so I'll jump Whippet back to Gateway now and try some unofficial runs round the course.

As far as plotting and deciding where to get the items from goes, I was reasonably happy with my rather hurried selections for the Consumer Tech, there were going to be 2 jumps to Soholia no matter what. I didn't think going to the outpost there would save much time over Kyoto Orbital, but it looks like I was wrong. It was quicker finding a profitable item to take back to Dublin Citadel (Clothes in my case) but not enough to make up for the longer flying time.

I think from watching the Shame video @Darkfyre99 had the best choice for Domestic Appliances - McAllaster Terminal in NLTT 34715 was 20.5ly from Gateway and then 16.5ly to LP 131-66. Single jumps and no shenanigans with fuel required.

There's been lots to learn from this race! :)

No-one ever said the plotter was the best option, just an option
In fact when I set the race up and working out options I never once used the plotter as it is not that intuitive. I worked out each leg using 80% jump range thus realising there was actually plenty of fuel. This then gave the option of reducing the jumps. Then I calmly set about saying nothing. Its seemed only fair!

I'll do the championship leaderboards today (been a bit busy making videos up 'til now).

Well, shame on me for thinking I had to start the race with full hull and fuel. Videos/tutorials like this are really helpful for those of us who still don't quite grok all of the little details.

Actually I think full hull was required but we quite often allowing tinkering with fuel levels for a bit of added route plotting "optimisation" fun and strategy.

The forum thread for the next race is up!

Race starts Saturday.
