Steam or direct from Frontier? - the demise of an Xbox player

For me it's really about just making things more intuitive. If I run the game through steam I have to open steam to open the launcher to play the game. If I use the standalone launcher I just have to open the launcher and run the game. It uses less resources. And by the way, as a console gamer, I was totally unprepared for the idea of what a launcher even was. I have to open a program to run a program? It still seems a little silly.
Thank you.

Another advantage is that one less company will have your credit card information, and considering how many times companies I do business with (Sony, T-Mobile, etc) have been hacked, I go out of my way to limit who has my personal data.

The major disadvantage is that if the Steam network goes down (very rare, but it happens), then you can't play your games. It's too bad that the Frontier launcher no longer works independent from Steam like it used to.
Yes good point there, key hacking is prevalent, Steam has been hacked multiple times.

I prefer to buy from frontierstore as 1) all revenue goes to FD, there is no "cut" paid to valve and 2) you don't need to have Steam running to play Elite (I have several commanders, I would need to log in and out of different Steam accounts to chose which commander I wanted to play, without steam I just use renamed copies of the EDLaunch.exe file).
As I am already using Steam, if I make another Steam account for another CMDR, does that require another game installation or can I use the same installation?

I think it just uses the same installation. Switch Steam accounts but then you might need to go through the verification part on the launcher, I am not sure as I only have the one account that needs to use steam so I can't check this at the moment.

Steam will just use the same installation (as long as you tell it to!) and will keep track over multiple accounts as to whether the game files are up to date or not. You just have to log into the correct Steam account in order to use the right Cmdr.

I also have separate Windows user accounts for each Cmdr which keeps all of the journal files separate as well, but that is optional.

admittingly I have grinned a cheesy grin whilst logging in via FD whilst steam had fallen over quite a few times in the past
and the forum steam cmdr's not so happy they could not play...……………….
and as for Epic well the word fail comes to mind
( even if you do end up looking like a simpson you'll still look kinda kewl in those focal's ;) )

I originally bought on Steam, but stopped using it when various log-in issues and update problems started happening. Those seem to have been solved, but still. Why bother with another vendor? Just support Frontier and buy direct.
