What is the safest way to rank fed to Petty Officer

Can you do Sothis runs for this or are they all illegal passengers.

It's for wife who wants to visit sol but uses auto Dock so is therefore at risk of scans. (Am I right in thinking popping a heatsink breaks a scan?)

not all sothis passenger missions are illegal passengers, so yes, you can do it. there are also data courier missions between sothis and ceos.

alternatively i recommend simply looking for a system with some federal factions in outbreak/bust/famine and do those donation missions. it is rather quick and does not require going out to sothis (which is worth a visit though)

Not all vip tourists at Robigo are criminals. At least half of them are legal passengers. Proper attention is required when accepting missions.
Dropping heat below 20% does end a scan but only when the scanning ship isn't too close. The distance depends on the size of your ship.
Also try if you can pop a heat sink during autodock anyway, because you don't have full control of the ship controls then.
But there are many more and more effective ways to interrupt a scan or better yet avoid them. Speed is one of them.

The question seems to imply a voluntary grind, though. Any fed mission anywhere will contribute to the rank. Try to always choose max rep as reward.

Just a tip, if she gets to max rep with all the factions she will almost never get scanned, I flew in 7k tons of illegal goods and never got scanned once!

There are rescue missions from burning stations at the moment. you can go all the way to King/Admiral in no time. There's no trouble with police or interdictions - just go to the station pick up stuff, land, take the passenger missions and go to the recue ship. The whole thing takes only a few minutes. You can complete more than 100 missions in an hour. An un-engineered Python or Anaconda is all you need and both work as well as anything. I'd use a Python unless you do very short play sessions.

I recommend 2 heatsinks doing that one, one as you approach the pad and again as you launch.

Exactly, but there isn't such good eating when dining on criminal VIPs, which I was under the impression plagues Sothis / Ceos / Robigo, hence the question.

Hang on a minutes, you lot don't eat VIPs to gain rank?? Nor do we! It was just a phone typo... honest!

I don't think autodock works for the rescue passenger missions but we could defo try the other mission variant where you collect the debris floating inside the stations.

I'm not sure I understand that. Are you indicating that you're unable to land without the docking computer?
