A bug.

It's an artefact related to wing targeting, if it's intended it's not working in an useful or decipherably useful way.

So either a bug that it's there at all, or bugged in it's implementation. Fortunately it causes no problems other than a minor distraction so I guess it's considered a low priority.

I believe that will tell you if you're looking at wingmate #1, #2 or #3.
In this case, I believe that'll show you're staring at #3.
