Steam or direct from Frontier? - the demise of an Xbox player

I go with Steam a lot simply because you can buy used games for a fraction of the costs.

I got ED Horizons for 6 dollars. I got Odyssey two weeks later for 15 dollars.

Just Google Up Elite Dangerous and click on Shopping.

Right now, ED Horizons Steam key is $6.66. ED Odyssey is $16.16. Both at G2A which is who I like to deal with most. Just make sure you check the region before you buy.

just for your information - G2A and similar sites are unauthorized key sellers. If there is a problem with a key (i.e. key already redeemed, wrong product or outright scamming) Steam support is not going to help you.

Odd. I've never had an issue at all and I've bought from them for years.

The only problem I have ever heard of is someone not paying attention buying a Steam Key for the EU zone and trying to activate it in the U.S. That, they will not help you with. Everything else, Steam fully supports.

After all, they get a cut of the money as does whoever made the game.

From that article:

"Hundreds of developers earn money from selling their keys through marketplaces such as G2A," head of communications Maciej Kuc told BBC News.
"We don't plan on taking away that possibility anytime soon, as it would be hurtful not only to our customers but also to the many developers who use our platform to their benefit."
He added that G2A already took measures to tackle illegal sales.
And he said developers were partly responsible for some of the scams on its site because of the "thousands of free keys" they had created for giveaways.
There are people who try to scam people on any platform you care to name, including Steam. G2A is absolutely no different. In fact, they sell games in the EXACT same manner that Steam does with one exception: they don't support the game itself, only the sale of it.

Edit to Add:

I've made 47 purchases from G2A over the last few years. Never once have I had any issues at all with them, Steam or any game.

Ok, so I’ve taken delivery of a gaming PC that exceeds the spec for Odyssey, so hopefully no problems there.
Someone in another thread said “when I say PC I mean Frontier and not Steam”.
If I purchase Odyssey through Steam at some point in the future do I run the risk of being ditched like I was as an Xbox player?
Do I purchase through Steam or Frontier?
Get the game direct from FDev, games on STEAM take an extra day to get updates and if you buy from STEAM you are locked to STEAM.

as such, only buying from Steam (note that trades which involve items not available through their trading system are unsupported), the devs directly (if they offer sale by key) or legitimate sites such as Humble (which only sell keys they obtained from the devs) is safe.

Whatever.

I've never had an issue. Nobody I know has ever had an issue. Pay more if you want.

I use steam 'cause my teenagers recommended it, and last time I bought a game they came in a box. I keep content with it partly for convenient single point of distribution (now that I am even a multi-game owner..) and they also have a decent consistent return policy. I have returned about as many as I kept. Finally, I can play Elite with my friend who uses Linux due to their efforts on the windows emulator, Proton. And finally, also gives you a library page gallery view showing you your titles, that is just a bit like the old days having a bookshelf for your boxes of disks and manuals. You know?

I’ve started spending all my ARX on xBox and have to admit to buying more

Why not wait until you're EDO'd and then spend on ARX? You might like to own some of the snazzy ARX suits for virtual photography purposes, or arm variation. 🧐 The weapons all have a ton of ARX skins each too, so I assume they must be popular with Cmdrs also.

I’ve also now connected it up to a projector and use headphones so I’m really immersed and just lose myself in the play. I jump out of my skin nearly every time I get interdicted now.

🤣 👻 I've never used a huge projector for games, but a mate used to swear by them when holidaying ⛱️ to avoid lugging his monitor with him. I've seen cinema screens rented out too, so I can see the appeal. I too use IEMs, and so don't forget to enable and try "DTS" in EDO audio settings @CMDR Theolan as its explicitly coded and works great for a wider 3D soundscape. If your "beast" is jacked with a DTS:X enabled soundcard you may also be able to configure locally between a 'balanced' or 'spacious' spatial mode etc... just wait until a ship unexpectedly zooms past you in proximity... base guards open fire... the "illegal download detected" claxon roars... or the new 🚨 999 searchlights 🚨 focus upon you with update 12 (as per today's Frameshift Live #8) ... it'll not just be your skin you need to worry about :poop:

ps - exact same game server & same update release times too ime.
pps- always backup any custom binds.

If I am intending to buy a game for long term I always try to but it direct from the maker, while at times it may cost more, I think they should have the money rather than some of it going to a third party that provides little more than a game launcher and problems.

So yes I am for buying it from direct from FDEV.

I went direct with Frontier simply because it removes an unnecessary third party from the equation. It just mitigates my risk - in the unlikely event anything goes wrong, I know I can just approach FDev directly and not have to worry about which company to speak to.

I always go direct where it’s possible, but still have a load of games on Steam as well of course.

I also have an older system that has an SSD for the system files and VR set-up, and I have an HDD for storage, where I keep all my games.
But by going direct I was able to add Elite to the SSD to make it run as quickly as possible (and I have no problems with Odyssey frame rates by the way, running on VR Ultra), whereas my Steam games run from the HDD, which is obviously slower.
This might not matter to your system, but I’ve put it out there as it might be a factor.

As a PC gamer, you will have Steam on your PC anyway, it’s inevitable. You’re going to end up with a load of games on Steam, so either/or is fine really for ED.

Personal preference…

Direct from Frontier is the best option.
  • it does not depend on a 3rd party service provider
  • it undercuts the 3rd party so all the money goes to Frontier
  • it can be linked with Steam later on (and will allow further purchases from steam) while allowing the game to be started from either Steam or directly from Frontier

Not at last, if you already have an Elite account on Steam, getting another account directly from Frontier is basically the only simple option to have a second Elite commander (unless you get it from Epic)
