Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I said that to you previously, and put in a link to https://www.spansh.co.uk/fleet-carrier which can calculate fuel costs for your route (assuming you are going somewhere known). Carrier fuel use is by distance and weight of the carrier (and all services and cargo, but not ships that are docked).

It can still be expensive to take long trips :)

Yes I did look at it and could not understand fuel use from it, but will try again. I'm only jumping the carrier a few light years right now so didn't bother with route plotters or fuel calculators.

Oh right. The spansh website isn't great with small portrait screens on smartphones. The fuel use is off the screen and its not clear there is more to the results table than you can see.

I was getting a little burned out yesterday grinding Federation ranks, so I figured I would do something else. I know from my reading that the Corvette is notoriously bad on jump range, so I figured I'd go ahead as a change of pace and get the Guardian FSD Booster out of the way.

I am here to tell you all, I had rather drink molten lead than do one of those again. That was the most annoying, tedious, Mickey Mouse, tedious, head scratching, tedious, boring, tedious thing I have ever done in any game.

Oh...and it was tedious as well.

Well, to make things simplier the rule i'm using myself is that carrier consumes between 70 t empty (it's a bit less, with a margin) to 140 t (again less, margin) per 500 ly jump and every 1000 t cargo added to carrier will cost me 3 more t tritium (again less, margin) per every jump starting from 70 t. Smaller jumps are much cheaper.

That will make it easy to decide, if you're ok with carrying another module/pack/anything. If staying in/around the Bubble you'll likely won't be even thinking about your fuel costs. Like even a luxury of jumping in a carrier to that one system with a 2nd star that is too far away to escape a long super cruise would cost me 12 t (less than a million) if that system is 35 ly away. In-system jump costs 5 t.

For exploration though indeed, 20k+ tons do have a cost.

Good morning from Heaven's Lathe, a mere 2434ly away from Sol.
Earlier in this thread I posted pictures of several ringed neutron stars that minded me to pay HD 175876 (Heaven's Lathe) a revisit. When I left the bubble to visit Sag A* for the first time last year in this Phantom, Heaven's Lathe was among the first sights I visited on the way. I've never seen its equal in the 450Kly+ I've travelled in the game since. Bathed in the light of a blue-white O class star 118 times the mass of our own sun, this celestial disk is clearly seen 4000ls or more away. There is a tourist beacon here.

That's very cool. I remember the first time I dropped into a system with a neutron star and almost crapped my pants while burning to death. I just wasn't expecting it.

It wouldn't be so bad if you weren't forced to quit the game and log in again to reset the pillars so you can get 21 guardian tech components.
Guardian shield reinforcement is really good and you have space and power for them on a Corvette. I don't think much of the Guardian ship launched fighters - Taipan fixed beams and a good ranked NPC pilot is fine.
Honestly my Fed rank progression is not grindy. Quite a few rep+++++ missions readily available outside of data courier.

Well I am more talking about how precise the surround stage is when listening via stereo headphones to properly recorded binaural audio. Stick your cans on and watch this for example:

I never really played Elite with headphones but I got some decent little HyperX for another game and should probably try it. It's just that one of the things I liked about Elite is that I could have it on for hours and chill out while catching up with podcasts on my phone. I'll have to put my thinking hat on to see if there's a balance to be struck somewhere. I know I did try headphones at least once and it sounded nice though.

I heartily recommend a decent set of closed-back cans (open backed are not spouse friendly :D ) and playing with "optimised for: nighttime". Mine are a pretty basic pair of JVC's but they have a great frequency range and sound quite nice. I was toying with the idea of some 7.1's... not sure.

On another note, the mat requirements for suit and weapon upgrades is... quite a lot.

The HyperX Cloud II have a fake 7.1 option but I've never really used it. It might be great but I was advised not to use it with the game I was mostly playing at the time.

I also have some great bluetooth JVC headphones for maybe £30 or less. It's just that I started using these nice bluetooth JVC earphones (also £30) in work and it coincided with a slight impairment of my vision on the left side where the earphone was so I got a little paranoid. That's why I went with wired for the HyperX. Although I'm now back to using the JVC earphones in work so that was a load of unnecessary information. 😌

I was actually only responding to ask what "optimised for: nighttime" is?

There are audio settings in the game options one of those is nighttime it allows you to run at lower volumes without losing the quieter bits of the soundscape so you don’t disturb peoples sleep.

Bought a grade 2 Artemis suit for 750,000 today. It might have a bit more battery and air than stock, not sure. It's the only suit I have any interest in improving for now, so might as well. Maybe I'll get more into personal equipment engineering when the fleet carrier is fully outfitted and the novelty of it has worn off.

The mat requirements of personal equipment is outrageous. Just to prepare you :D

Manufacturing instructions... oh, how we need to be able to trade data at the bar!
Yes, it's a strange oversight/decision. I feel like they forgot everything that was learned from ship engineering when they designed the on-foot engineering. We can't trade everything. We can't remove/replace engineering. We have fixed cap limits on overall storage rather than individual items, and etc. I get the impression that a new team designed the stuff for Odyssey and didn't really understand the history of engineering.

Oh well. Do more missions! Sometimes you can get 5 MI's for one mission. I was able to get the ones I needed mostly by doing that.
