I have seen the ads on YouTube and after playing over the last few days Im baffled as to how anyone could present the current experience with any sort of proudness that those adverts seem to portray. The current playability of the game is the worst Ive seen for years. Heres some of the issues Ive been hit with over the last couple weeks or so,
  • Desync still a mess so all combat is a super janky experience that is far far below a minimum standard of playability.
  • C2 elevator teleporting again
  • Station elevators not spawning in
  • Station elevator doors opening and being presented with a wall
  • Clipping through walls and floors seems to be more prevalent
  • Inventory system is a chore, moving items is unreliable with rubber banding everywhere, buying and selling unreliable. Quick sell is the most ironic button in gaming right now
  • Ships randomly exploding
  • Star map seems to be degrading again
  • Client crashes are a thing again now, for some people they're an hourly occurrence (lost a 400k load of diamond just this evening)
  • 30k's, while not as bad as they have been, are very much back
  • Trading terminals for cargo running don't work reliably
  • Package missions dont complete with packages vanishing mid travel sometimes
  • Cant deposit boxes into terminals reliably
  • Bunker missions still dont work correctly, cant complete missions
  • Bunker enemies still teleporting around
  • Cant reliably equip or switch weapons. Rubber banding or items getting stuck in your hands
  • Looting mechanics dont work reliably
  • Sometimes cant consume food or drink
  • Mining still having issues with various elements of the mechanics
  • Landed ships can "spaz out" and flip over, float, or do all sorts of weird and wonderful things
  • Several ships have issues with internal systems not working properly, like elevators or weapons racks.
  • Millions in aUEC randomly vanishing
  • ASOP terminals unreliable, often cant claim ships or retrieve them
  • Global chat completely not working
  • Friends list vanishing
  • Cant create or maintain parties
  • Party pips not showing up
  • Getting random crime stats
  • Being scanned by security and getting an incorrect result that Im carrying illegal cargo
  • Being scanned by security mid combat
  • NPC ships ramming all the time, and ramming is now a tactic used to help ships like Auroras defeat any other ship in 1 hit.
  • Cant adjust missile count so can only fire 1 at a time
  • ATC requires multiple attempts to give me a landing spot or let me take off
  • The landing indicator often doesnt appear, which makes landing a places like Orison difficult and make PO a wonderful game of dodge the parking fine. #
  • Elevators smacking people through walls, killing them or punting them out into space
  • Ive seen complaints of headless people again, and loss of hud
  • People have spawned in klesher without a multitool
  • People have spawned in klesher in full armour
  • Fan code in klesher not working properly
  • Cant hold hacking chips in your hand properly
  • Walking out from hab in oustposts causes the player to "take a hit", which can cause a downed state, steps can still be an issue.
  • Internal ship elevators not working, 400i and raft are 2 notable offenders (luckily both have a side hatch you can jump from, coincidence?)
  • Cant interact with weapon racks in ships, or weapons dont stay in these racks when you store them
  • Cant equip missiles from inventory to ships.
  • Bunker turrets incorrectly firing at you as you approach, sometimes this is invisible meaning you dont notice unless you happen to spot your shields taking damage
  • Character randomly dropping dead
  • Cant reliably spawn more than 1 ship at a time.
  • If leaving a parent ship in a vehicle, the parent ship often incorrectly despawns, potentially leaving you stranded.
  • Get thrown through the wall when attempting to leave a bed in a hab, most notably at microtech
  • Cant dock to refuel with Starfarer
  • Tractor beam not retrieving mined minerals correctly.
  • Long waiting queue to get into servers
  • Load into the game and all your money has gone.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but this is the 3.17.1 experience for me. A lot of these issues are far more game breaking for new players than veterans that are somewhat used to this sort of stuff. Ive been trying to assist new players in the verse with mixed results. There is literally no part of the game untouched by multiple bugs that make sustained playing sessions impossible for me. I keep dropping in and out, but man its a tough play. 3.17 in general has probably been the worst patch in recent memory, so bad Ive not even talked about it amongst friends as they would laugh in my face if I managed to convince them it was worth trying.

Just goes to show, the backers wetting their pants over CR's recent letter either are new or have conveniently erased from their minds every previous time CR has said persistence or SM are coming soon... let alone any mention of SQ42 release dates.

I'm sure there are backers out there who'd see that vid as proof of CIG's steely determination to achieve the impossible ;). (Rather than the hapless results of them not having settled on a networking architecture for nearly a decade...)

The Chris Persists...

That's the thing, even the short list of tasks that were possible to complete in previous patches, while carefully avoiding known pitfalls, is now compromised by multiple show stopper bugs. TBH my 3.17.1 test was short. Logged in, wake up from bed, fall through the floor -> dead. That was it for this patch for me ;)

...so.... otherwise... ...all's good yeah?

listening to this I could be listening to a DDF chat back in the day about Elite npc crew etc.
I just hope CIG do a better job than FD have done so far with npcs. As a complete single playergamer unless playing with real world friends but still wanting to try all the toys npc crew is a huge deal for me, on a par with VR (which makes it my 2 most important things)

Mike. It's 2022. And the same source that guy is using revealed the real skinny.

This is how close CIG currently are to NPC ship crews:

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKhBrT6fh7w&t=34m22s

To properly manage, uh, expectations we are shooting for the moon with this thing. And, and, and, when, when it is complete, and when it is, uh, fully developed, it'll be a thing unlike any other.
NPC multicrew is not a 'soon' thing

Nowhere close. So let's look to what we do know.

This is how their most complex existing NPCs function when the servers are under load:

Hell, this is how janky their combat NPCs generally are... (Something that can be compared directly with EDO, if that's what you want to do).

In CIG's latest large announcement from the Chairman they notably drew back from saying the 2023 networking changes would help with all that overt dysfunction, as they had claimed previously. Instead they said the next major networking changes would help with that. The impossible 'dynamic server meshing' changes. Scheduled for, (I kid you not): "Future".

This is the lesson man. Believe none of their chat. Until it's in the game.

(And even then, expect changes ;))

on a par with VR

Good news. Star Citizen had native Oculus DK 1 support in the hangar module in 2014 for at least a couple of months. The eyes were the wrong way round and it was horribly dark, but Chris said it was support none the less so stretch goal ticked off cash in the bank.

But the excitement never stops, they then said in the VR press that 2016 would be the year of VR focus so that's as good as having it done I suppose.

Not sure what's going on since, I think there was a junior developer that remarked that he would like to do it, cash in the bank again I guess, as good as done etc

Who knows what VR association CIG will make next without all the hassle of actually delivering native support

It's been nothing but solid progress for ten years straight huzzah

Will Jackfrags include any of these off-camera upsets in his next vid? Who can tell ;)

Really incredibly little has happened in this stream, aside from general glitchiness. Struggling from the off, it took them an hour to meet up at the Invictus bling parade. They did manage to do one mission in a hired ship, where the mission icons confused them and then they 30ked.

The AngryGamers guys have been generally grumpy about the performance and stability if somewhat amused by the perpetual scuffedness of it all. Jack is also unimpressed by the FPS at Orison etc.

Jack is baffled that SQ42 seemed to be done in 2018. And thought the Sandworm sounded likely. He's also been gifted lots of credits, which is nice.

How much is Chris Roberts using Wing Commander lore in Star Citizen and is he actually allowed to use it? You would think there must be professional writers involved in the game now seeing as the have half a billion dollars, but then we are talking about Chris Roberts ego here. Why would he feel the need to hire professional writers when he feels the stuff he comes up with himself is pure gold

A lot of Elite was retconned for Dangerous, and it's better for it. The way the Thargoids was drip-fed into the game was brilliant. I do miss the edible poets though <sigh>

Have you read the lore page, if it's gold then it's just paint on excrement! And no can't see anything from Wing Commander in SC.
Personally, what I've seen so far when it comes to the "lore," is a lot of it is stuff from other franchises, including Wing Commander, with the serial numbers filed off. Which I personally find rather... distasteful when it comes to worldbuilding. It's like biting into an apple, and finding half a worm.

Granted, it's difficult to come original ideas, especially in this day and age, but there's a world of difference between having an homage to something, and outright ripping it off. At this stage, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there isn't a red headed ace pilot in Squadron 42, of Russian descent, with the first name Natasha, and the call sign Black Widow. ;)

Wasnt Wing Commander very derivative to start with ? I recall a "top ace" wingman whose callsign was "Iceman", and other complete rip-offs (IIRC even the Kilrathi were lifted off sci-fi books) like Mark Hamill flying down a canyon to drop a bomb on a precise spot in WC3, some ship designs 100% taken from Star Wars or Galactica, etc . The whole thing was a collection of cliches.
TBH I couldnt care less about the lore in a MMO. As for SQ42, I reserve my judgement until I can see anything, at the moment it's still vaporware.
