Whether this is fair or unfair i am not gonna argue, but for me i have different tolerences for different era of games.I also very much enjoy playing retro games still and I wonder if that's part of why I am less focused on these types of details if the overall feeling of the game is 'good enough'. I used to play Frontier on an unexpanded A1200, when I got the 030 accelerator it really made a difference, and much more so when I got my 040, however, I would imagine the FPS was still more around 30 something rather than 144 that I'm hitting in space these days in Elite.
I still play shoot the bull, a game from the early 80s very regularly (great game when there are 4 of you playing for penalty shots of booze) same with shuuz, world class bowling etc etc. I have almost zero expectation of visuals from those games.
but modern games where i spend significant amounts of money I do have high expectations, esp when i have spent a hell of a lot of money on extra hardware specifically to get the most out of them.
(I bought 2 VR headsets and multiple graphics cards upgrades primarily for elite dangerous for instance as well as a high end racing wheel and pedals for Assetto Corsa and Dirt rally game... as such I do expect a certain level of visual fidelity as well as general feature quality......)
I do sometimes wonder how anyone ever played wing commander on an A500 however.... it ran appalingly on my unexpanded A1200. Frontier Elite 2 was not as bad but even that was barely playable imo....... (much better on the A1200)... mind you F1GP ran at 8fps iirc and i played that a lot and stunt car racer (one of my all time favourite games) was not much better.
