Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

... and the beta was announced in the last letter from the Chairman (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/18696-Letter-From-The-Chairman)

Our current goal is to introduce Server Meshing and 4.0 as an early technical preview to Evocati testers in PTU at the end of Q4 this year, allowing our most ardent players to help us start testing Server Meshing so we can refine and polish it for release. But this is heavily conditioned on how well / easy the Persistent Entity Streaming roll out goes, so be warned this has a high chance of slipping into Q1 next year. Once Server Meshing starts to see real-world testing with thousands of players in PTU, we will get a better idea of how much time it will need to cook in PTU before it can make its way to LIVE. We are aiming for the end of Q1 2023, but again, we really will not know with confidence until it hits testing.

Such lulz

Changing topic a bit, on this. I know it is not your case but that paragraph sounded a bit like the dreams.txt we often seen posted by backers that really do not know better. Do we really think this has a remote chance in hell to actually be a thing? Especially given the AI "progress" and the miserable state and roadmap for server meshing?
Probably not, but at least you know I'm as sceptical as you are anyway :D

The big ships aren't really my thing...with the exception of the cargo haulers of course. Horses for courses... I do have an Odyssey sitting in the hangar, but the chances of seeing that in my lifetime are leaning toward being unlikely :)

Anyway...I melted the BMM and got my Corsair out of buyback with the store credits. The Corsair is set for flyable sometime during 3.18 and it looks functional enough...plus it has a decent loaner in the meantime. I had enough left in store credit to buy a Raft, a space forklift and a few new paint jobs for my ships...left $100 bucks in the store in case I need it :)

Given what they have at the moment - Turrets "work" generally speaking (doors leading to them not so much, but that's nor specific to one ship), the hotel thing could work by re-using existing systems (maybe re-using the room assignment system from hospitals), the onboard shopping mall seems to be possible now that they changed the inventory system (so I suppose the sales terminal would show the ship inventory ?) so that's not "out there" for CiG. Compared to some other ships like the Caterpillar or the MSR where a lot of functions are still place holders with nothing on the roadmap indicating they'll implement them, I'd be optimistic for the BMM at least for its core functions.
Of course given the laughably small "universe" of SC that kind of ship is ludicrously oversized.

I dunno, the Merchantman’s spec is essentially for a portable city. And you’ve seen how SC’s stationary cities behave right ;)

(That’s a lot of NPCs for a start. More passive than the 890J mission probably, but probably greater in number in the name of fidelity etc. Feels like there a fair few hurdles they could run into there. And that’d be prior to any quanta hook up for the market, and all the curveballs a player-run station might throw into the mix ;))

Bonus lol, found this while checking up on the BMM’s spec:

Nov 2014

The concept pass is complete, and as you can see we have designed both the interior and exterior of the ship. The next step is bringing the Merchantman itself into the engine. We intend to launch the Merchantman (and similarly large ships) with or shortly after Arena Commander 2.0, as we head towards the persistent universe alpha.

“I guess I'll wait

So I bought a bundle yesterday. Always planned to, after the free week I finally committed.
Today. I start up a delivery mission. Seems easy enough, first mission to get the hang of the game, no sweat. Except for the bug that removes the marker when you land at your target destination. But no issue, the contract description tells me to drop of the package at the "front desk". After crawling around the station with my delivery in hand, I found it: The reception! I talk to the cleark, he tells me to "drop the package". Only problem is that he doesn't tell me where. But after looking around a bit with the Inner Thought system I find the "use" interactable next to him. I drop the delivery off, talk to him again, he tells me to "drop off the package" again. So I remove the delivery and place it again, but to no avail. This repeats 2-3 times until I'm hit with a 30k, the package was never delivered. But oh well, no big problem, looking at my contracts list shows that the initial contract is gone, but another one just like it is up. So I accept that, get the delivery, fly to a different station, full of hope that the marker will not despawn this time. Alas, it does despawn just the same and after crawling around GrimHEX for half an hour in search of the reception, I got hit with another 30k.

Oh well, helpful folks pointed out that mercenary work pays out better anyways, so I try that. After first foolishly accepting a contract to take out pirate ships, which I luckily never encountered, I accept a ground base support contract. I'm in high spirits, got my shotgun ready, but given that this would mark the first time I attempted to land on a planet, I come in way too hot and crash into the surface. Now slightly annoyed I reclaim a new ship and head out again to reclaim my stuff. After all, those were the very first items I bought and I'd like to hold on to them a little longer. After landing now gracefully next to what should be my crash site, I am greeted to 4 landing legs protruding weirdly out of the surface of the planet, as well as a single, dysfunctional access ramp marker. But at least my stuff is packed neatly into a box next to it. So I pick up the box, carry it back to my new ship, open it, and find out that unfortunately the box only caried what was stored in the ship's inventory, but not what I had on me. Which included all my weapons. After searching for another box to no avail, I make my way over to the complex to simply steal a weapon off a guard or an enemy if that opportunity presents itself. And it does. I now possess multiple new weapons and a new armor. With high spirits I carry my loot to my ship, unload, and head back to the complex to carry even more loot out. That is when another 30k happens. After relogging, I now have lost again all my loot, both on me and on my ship.

I think I'm done for the forseeable future. While I look forward to playing the finished product, I almost find it arrogant of RSI to not give players easy access to at least get their stuff back when bugs that literally strip you naked are numerous and ever-present.”

Clearly FUD of the highest order! When certain people play they never encounter problems like this. Probably their own fault, they didn't install it on a SSD or have a 50 Gb page file set up on their SSD.
