The Star Citizen Thread v 3.0

@RC-Plorer - Just read the Erin Roberts piece.

I found the following statement rather unfortunate and presumably a misquote.

Joseph: So will there the FPS mechanics be used in Squadron 42 or will it purely be dogfighting?

Erin: Oh no, the way to look at Squadron 42 and Star Citizen on a whole, it is basically an FPS game where you’ll use vehicles. So you’ll be in first person all the time, but you can use third person.

So instead of running around holding a rifle you're holding a hud?

That's what I was afraid of. I didn't back an FPS game. I'm telling yer, it's going to be a AAA version of Mace Griffin : Bounty Hunter :(

Ya that is not good.

But it explains why CIG went with the Crytech engine.

Y'know, I'm starting to feel that the comment by Erin Roberts may well be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me :(

The whole answer (I don't like picking out specific sentences/mine quoting and those stuff... :p ):
Erin: Oh no, the way to look at Squadron 42 and Star Citizen on a whole, it is basically an FPS game where you’ll use vehicles. So you’ll be in first person all the time, but you can use third person. The whole idea is it’s not like Wing Commander where all you did was fly your ship, land and go to a little room go to or a cafe to talk to people. You’ll wander around in “first person” you could choose to get into a vehicle like a space ship, you could fly a multi-crew vehicle or larger ship, that’s the whole idea behind it. It won’t be split up and you won’t be loading between these areas. You’ll seamlessly start in a location and walk around, get in a vehicle and fly somewhere else, then come back. That’s how the whole system will work.

They're still leaning too far towards it being an FPS game with vehicles.

Halo, CoD and the Battlefield games got there first.

I wonder how stupid all those people who backed SC because "they were tired of FPS games" would feel now.

That would be my concern. But then, looking back to ED Alpha 1.0 you would be forgiven for thinking the game would have merely been a collection of tinned scenarios to explore. SC is further behind ED in development terms, perhaps as much as 18 months to two years. It's a bit early to write SC off at this stage as an FPS in space.

I don't think it was the original plan, but it's what they can pull off within the limitations of the engine.

It wasn't the original plan, which is why everyone went "meh?" when they chose the CryEngine at the beginning, but it looks like they're concentrating far too much on what the CryEngine does best, and that's making FPS games.
-
True, I had a feeling that this was where it was going with all the work they were doing on the FPS part, but I still hoped that might have been like a bolted on module that you could take or leave, like what Elite will be doing with it's future expansions.

I'm gutted by this revelation, I am. I'd start a thread about it on the SC forums, but I can't be bothered dealing with all the ers on there right now :(

No, I want SC to be a Sci-Fi World "sim", everything should feel/"flow" naturally and not bolted on. I don't a "Hey, some guys borded your ship, please buy the 20$ FPS module to defend yourself with bolted-on FPS mechanics..."

I don't see the problem. ED will get FPS part to. For them it isn't that difficult to as there engine was probably also use to run The Outsider content on.
As for FPS it makes perfectly sense as a pilot you are a char. But if you want pure space craft gameplay and be that your in game char.
As spacecraft is the gamer. You can take this as a fictional solution.

As in CoD you have excosuit. But in this case of space game, it could be as large as a spacecraft. So the Pilot is intergrated into the ships system as command unit.

So with that there is no need to planet side landings as it need surgical attempt to extract you from the space ship.
unless your space craft has transformer capabilities as change in something with wheels or tracks or walking mech.

Or unless you are inspired by the many scifishows you just want as captain Reynolds of the firefly walk into your space craft.
Or as Commander Crais connect with Taylin in farscape.
Or as wingcommander get mission briefing with a guy that looks like a walking lion.
Or as SG1 go on missions.

But I think it will be more a space game. With a stong FPS genre mix.

which is really perfect to me. I enjoy FPS games. I rather avoid anything third person.
I looking out for the boarding gameplay in both games.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I can't quite understand the problem here?

When I first came across SC and watched their early videos the impression I had was of a game where you were able to get out of your ship and walk around. I fail to see why controlling a ship from what is essentially first person is any different from the likes of the implementation in ED. So for me this "revelation" is simply stating the obvious.

Whether or not that was what was originally promised (I came across it shortly after its KS ended) is another matter, but unless I'm missing something I don't consider the aforementioned statement remotely surprising.

@SuperG
For me it was the way it was said. The choice of language suggested the emphasis of SC was now on FPS. I have no problem with that, but that isn't what the KS suggested - I thought it was a space flight game with an FPS element. Certainly my estimation was that SQ42 was a space flight mission based experience. ED because of the huge galaxy that has been simulated will always be a space flight game with an FPS element, also those are also not words that DB would ever utter, so the fact they were articulated like that for me is telling. I have previously reflected that I believe SC would eventually be known as the best FPS based space game and this rather re-enforces that reflection.

It comes down to what you want to play and I can understand a lot of gamer's really liking the kind of balance Erin was suggesting. In fact I would suggest from a marketing/sales perspective it makes absolute sense.

Ah I see. I didn't read it quite like that. I suppose it boils down to the %age of the time you have to spend playing the FPS (literal interpretation) portion compared to the space flight portion. I read it simply as "it's FPS technology essentially, so whether or not you're in the pilots seat or not, you're viewing everything just as you would in an FPS" as opposed to "it's an FPS game, and you can fly some ships. But mostly FPS."

I don't think that is what he really meant with that comment. If you want to build a more "immersive" (god I hate that term) game, then it makes sense that there would be a lot of FPS parts to the game. I mean you walking on planet side, going to different shops/getting equipment and all that. If you want to board your ship, you would have to walk to it etc, to interact with ship components in bigger ships you need walk to them and etc. When you look at it form that perspective, yeah FPS does play a big part and an important one.

But if your deal is only to be in your ship, then yeah, you will probably not have too much FPS going on.

To be honest, I am not worried about the FPS at all, cryengine was made for it. I am still worried about the dogfighting, as it's been close to 1 year since delay, close to 6 months since release of AC and little changes have been only made, especially to the feel of flying.

Not excusing the delays, but I'm quite enjoying dogfighting after the last big controls patch. It finally feels fun with my x52, which is very welcome. If they keep this momentum up in making improvements to the experience it'll really be something special. Time will tell.
