New 25 essential habitat animals META-WISHLIST

Their sexual dimorphism, the different coloration in particular is also pretty cool. I would really love to see them in game, of course I would also like the essentials like Golden lion Tamarins and Squirrel Monkeys, but chances of getting alot of primates are quite low if this is a last year of support.

Definitely, we need more new world monkeys with its prehensile tails like howlers. They would make nice chorus, too.The case of spider monkeys is very interesting, because they have both brachiation and prehensile tails. It may be interesting for future animations.

Mostly people want the howler because the generic monkey sign in the base game is howler-shaped.

That said it could utilise the chorus behaviour pretty spectacularly, so it will almost definitely be one of the next primates we receive.
I want howlers because of their vocalization and because they are iconic as a SA monkey. I would love spider monkeys as well. And small primates like tamarins and squirrel monkeys.

Also, the reason people are thinking howlers might be a given in a future pack is because of the chorus call thingy not because of the brachiation system. But if they could pull off something for prehensile tails like they did with the brachiations would be really cool. Spider monkeys move in a very different way than gibbons though. Their tails are essential in their locomotion and pretty much serve as a fifth limb. And they are pretty much exclusively arboreal, but well so are orangutans for the most part and they are ground dwelling in the game sooo... lol

After roughly half a year, and following the requests made by numerous forum users, I'm setting up this thread in order to start another 'Essential animals meta-wishlist' where I record users' animals wishlists and put them all together on a meta-wishlist. Given that we've gotten 3 DLCs since I started the previous thread; this time around I ask you all to please post a list of just 25 habitat animals.

The more people participating, the bigger the sample size will be so better conclusions can be drawn. I’m writting down every user who posts their list in order to avoid having repetitions. I intend to keep this updated as much as I can. Last update: 20th June, 2022

Since December 2021:
#Important note 1: Everyone who has submitted an initial list with 20 animals is allowed to vote for 5 additional animals now!#

Since April 2022:
#Important note 2: After every announced DLC, everyone who has submitted X votes to animals that have been added in said DLC can now re-submit an equal number (X) of additional votes ONLY if they quote their original post*1. This 'rule' has a retroactive effect*2; meaning that you can re-submit votes if your animals made it to the NA Animal Pack, Europe Pack, Wetlands Animal Pack or Conservation Pack*3.
*1 For people that submitted a list before 25 animals were allowed (so only 20) but then made an additional 5, both posts or a combination of both should be included in the quote. Same applies for those re-submitted votes after each DLC. QUOTING POSTS IS MANDATORY.
*2 If I find that any of the quoted posts have been edited recently, I will not allow re-voting animals to this user.
*3 Votes for a 'generic gibbon' and 'generic leopard' are allowed to be re-submitted.

The spirit and basic rules of the thread will be similar to those of the first one. Which means:
  • For the sake of keeping the same wishlist structure, I ask you to post your 25 essential habitat animals that you’d like to see in the game. Lists with anything above 25 animals will be discarded.
  • Exhibit animals will be omitted from the main meta-wishlist. Exhibit animals include arthropods, amphibians, snakes, other small reptiles (< iguanas), small fish and mouse-size mammals.
  • Flying birds and bats usually housed in aviaries will be omitted from the main meta-wishlist. Flying aviary birds include birds of prey, parrots, Columbiformes (pigeons), Passeriformes (small birds), Charadriiformes (gulls) and so on. Mainly ground-dwelling or semi-aquatic birds (mainly Waterfowl, Galliformes, Ratites, Pelecaniformes, Cranes, Penguins, etc.) will be added to the list.
  • Extinct species will not be considered.
  • As a general rule of thumb, animal species is the preferred category for animal submissions. Subspecies from already in-game animals are also accepted. Subspecies from animals that are not in-game will automatically be allocated to the superior species category. Specific domestic animals breeds are also accepted.
  • To simplify data collection, those answers that include several species in one slot (eg.: 1. Sloth) will be automatically treated as a single animal and added to the most requested species inside that generic animal group (eg. in this case: Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloth). This obviously leads to an underestimation of the total key requested animals.

As you can see, a total of 634 animals have been considered 'essential' by at least one forum user.

TL;DR: Post your 25 essential habitat animals wishlist here. I will record each wishlist and add it to the Meta-list. Aviary and exhibit animals won’t be taken into consideration.

PS: Check darthquell's and Reptomin's new thread for Essential exhibit animals, Spiderhawk's thread for Essential aviary animals and yoav's thread for Essential fully aquatic animals!

Mostly people want the howler because the generic monkey sign in the base game is howler-shaped.

That said it could utilise the chorus behaviour pretty spectacularly, so it will almost definitely be one of the next primates we receive.
I remember when I last walked through Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem, Netherlands.

They have black howlers, and the NOISE they made! Incredible. I've never heard an animal be so loud. They all hyped each other up and went louder and louder in a giant cacophony. They would be so cool to have in game.

1. De Brazza's Monkey
2. Tasmanian devil.
3. Great white pelican. (Would be okay with a general pelican entry, if that helps boost the ranking)
4. Bennett's Wallaby
5. Capybara.
6. Black Tailed Prairie Dog
7. American alligator.
8. Scimitar-horned Oryx
9. California sea lion.
10. Asian small-clawed otter.
11. Emu.
12. Helmeted Guinea Fowl
13. Pacific Walrus
14. Alpine Ibex
15. Hamadryas baboon.
16. Pere David's deer.
17. Moose
18. Collared Peccary
19. Lar gibbon.
20. American Beaver
Replacing the Oryx with:
Hawaiian goose

This applies to both posts above: I am sorry, but unfortunately I cannot accept your changes. I know that you most likely acted in good faith and you did nothing wrong by editing your original post was a mistake because now I have no way to check whether you made changes to your original list or not. I know you might find this 'unfair' but I ask you to put yourselves in my position. I can't just accept people to resubmit votes if I can't check whether they 'have the right' to do so.
The reasons for the edit in my new list is listed at the ended it. The og post only got edited to add the extra 5 when we got permission to do as such and to highlight any species that we got in dlc. I thought that would've been clear enough, but I understand that you just have to take my word for it. It's ultimately your choice.

This reply is quite late as I hadn't seen this message until now, sorry.

Oh boy, I only have 20 now? Well after picking 6 of 7 from South East Asia, I have picked none from the last two DLC. Gonna have to make some cuts and maybe adjust based on what we've gotten so far. New ones are noted via underline and *.

Reptilia:
1. Giant Girdled Lizard - would work in PZ - a grasslands lizard that lives in groups, another squamata that is not an exhibit animal or a monitor
2. Indian Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle - giant, mostly-aquatic freshwater turtle found in some zoos

Aves:
3. Red-crowned Crane - iconic crane species
4. Secretary Bird* - I find your lack of ground dwelling birds disturbing

Carnivora:
5. Spot-Necked Otter* - personal favorite, being more specific this time
6. Southern Sea Otter - also personal, but I'd say it has a greater case since we have a freshwater one
7. Leopard Seal - would be nice to get another Antarctic animal that is not a penguin.
8. Pallas Cat* - shifting focus onto small cats, and these are super unique and provide more central Asian animals, my next in line would be caracal

Artiodactyla:
9. Saiga - Asian plains bovid
10. Barasingha - Good for mixed species with peafowl, rhino, and elephant. Red Deer or Pere David's are good alternates.
11. Markhor - need to have more mountain species
12. Chacoan peccary - to round out pig species, preferred over other peccary due to conservation status, unique ecoregion, and physical features.

Perissodactyla:
13. Przewalksi's Wild Horse - most popular non-zebra equid.

Rodentia:
14. Capybara - largest rodent + another South American animals

Monotreme/Marsupials:
15. Platypus - this one speaks for itself
16. Short-beaked echidna - lets round out egg-laying mammals
17. Common Wombat - non macropod marsupial, personally prefer over Tasmanian devil
18. Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo* - an arboreal macropod, switched from Matschie's on last list

Primata:
19. White-handed Gibbon - need a gibbon species, picked over Crested due to larger range over SE-Asia Can I count this for Siamang? Don't think its needed as much anymore.
20. Black Howler Monkey - another new world monkey

Thank you @random goat for putting this together.

Adds:

Carnivora:
21. Fossa
22. Amur Leopard

Artiodactyla:
23. Gaur
24. Blackbuck

Monotreme/Marsupials:
25. Tasmanian Devil

Thank you Frontier for hitting 3 of my choices. :)
Adds:

Xenarthra:
1. Brown-throated Sloth

Primata:
2. Mantled Gureza

Aves:
3. North Island Brown Kiwi

Sorry for the long, multi-quotes, but I'm just gonna consolidate to a new list to make this simpler in the future. New ones are formatted this way***

Reptilia:

1. Giant Girdled Lizard - would work in PZ - a grasslands lizard that lives in groups, another squamata that is not an exhibit animal or a monitor
2. Indian Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle - giant, mostly-aquatic freshwater turtle found in some zoos

Aves:
3. Secretary Bird* - I find your lack of ground dwelling birds disturbing
4. North Island Brown Kiwi** - iconic NZ species

Carnivora:
9. Fossa* - round out Madagascar with key predator

Artiodactyla:
10. Saiga - Asian plains bovid
11. Barasingha - Good for mixed species with peafowl, rhino, and elephant. Red Deer or Pere David's are good alternates.
12. Markhor - need to have more mountain species
13. Chacoan peccary - to round out pig species, preferred over other peccary due to conservation status, unique ecoregion, and physical features.
14. Gaur* - I know we got WWB, but Gaur are the best bovid
15. Blackbuck* - ZT1 throwback as the first bonus animal, mixed species India exhibits are a must.
16. Muntjac (Any)*** - preferred feature of mini-deer/antelopes in the game, Red preferred, but Reeve's is most common.

Perissodactyla:
17. Black Rhinoceros*** - both white and black should be in game

Xenarthra:
18. Brown-throated Sloth** - the standout sloth species

Monotreme/Marsupials:
19. Short-beaked echidna - lets round out egg-laying mammals
20. Common Wombat - non macropod marsupial, personally prefer over Tasmanian devil
21. Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo* - an arboreal macropod, switched from Matschie's on last list
22. Tasmanian Devil* - iconic predator from Tasmania, makes the list now

Primata:
23. Black Howler Monkey - another new world monkey
24. Mantled Guerza** - need an African monkey

Hyracoidae:
25. Rock Hyrax***
- if prairie dogs and ibex are possible, then this rock-dwelling elephant relative is.

No, sorry, you can't count the gibbon for the siamang as they're different species. Please choose just 2 new animals between muntjac, black rhino and hyrax.

the conservation pack just remove one animal from my list (Przewalski's Horse), and once again, no maned wolf.

Last update: 1st July, 2022

As you can see, a total of 642 animals have been considered 'essential' by at least one forum user.
