Bounty hunting.

I’m fairly new to Ed. Been playing a out a hundred hours. I’m trying my hand at bounty hunting. I’m in a cobra markiii. . Two quick questions. First. Do I have to wait for the cops to start a battle before getting in or if I start one will the cops come help me. I am assuming of course im not in a system trying to defund the police. Second. It seems like forever for my ship to pick up a ship So I can scan it. I’m pointing toward it but a box never appears around it. Do I need to set something up or get closer. Thanks

You probably need an A rated sensor module. Much longer range. A D rated one is lighter but needs engineering to bring its sensor range up. Generally 6 to 7km is ideal for combat.
No u can pick a fight the feds or cops will help you at some point once it kicks off. As long as the target is wanted and your clean.

No, and not always.

You can start a fight with any other ship - but unless that ship is wanted (or you're in an Anarchy), the cops will show up soon after and come after you. So you really, really should scan that ship first. The cops also will only show up if you call them in, i.e. you didn't turn off "report crimes against me" and/or are close by (depends on the situation, e.g. RES vs. SC interdiction). You can't rely on them.

Scanning - target the ship. I have mapped a button to "select target". Then I only have to get the ship on my scanner, look at it and press "select target". But yes, a more sensitive sensor would help. But then again, I don't need to scan a ship from 6 km out if I only can effectively shoot it from less than 2 km. Whether it would be worth it to get a 3A scanner - the typical range would improve by ~40% to 6.4 as opposed to 4.6 km, but also the power consumption would be 0.64 vs. 0.25 MW (see https://coriolis.io/ ).

Thanks. I think you hit my issue. I was trying to go by the radar screen. If I had them in front and on the same level I would try to get a lock so I could scan them. I didn't realize they weren't close enough, or that I had to be so close to be in range. Like I said fiairly new and this really helps. I like making money that way but it was taking so long because I was a waiting to find someone getting shot at.... So just to make sure, Most of the time I can open fire AFTER I have verified they have a bounty, and I have to be in range of my scanner (4.6km) before I will get a box around them, which will enable me to scan them. Thanks Again

Too Add to the above scanner upgrade. I haven't done any engineering yet, haven't gotten that far. Obviously, I need to look into it.

Engineering. Yes... take your time.
Bounty hunting is as-good an activity as others depending upon your desires in-game.
As you mentioned, it earns credits. Importantly as well (imo), this kind of activity teaches you a great deal about flight, maneuvering, NPC tactics, feel of your ship, weapons and effective (or not) situations for them, reaction of other vessels in the area, etc. These little things go a long way towards making you more capable and confident 'behind the wheel.'
In terms of bounty hunting specifically, I can offer the advice to be careful of those wings of pirates that you'll inevitably encounter during your hunting.
Have fun with it!

Yeah if you target one and scan it and are about to open fire..but see the target is one of 3 or 4... think twice...cos all of those wingmen npcs will stop wotever their doing and head straight for you.

Yes. I fly toward it on the radar the screen and wait until the orange box is around it then hit target. My problem was I didn’t think I was getting the orange box. But from what everyone has indicated it’s because I wasnt close enough. Once I have been able to target them then my cycle through targets will add them and cycle them as well,,right. I found out the. Hard way about the winns. Barely made it out. Would have lost all my vouchers for an hours work. Was down to 38% hull

You need to do that before you do anything else when it comes to fighting.

Head to Deciat and unlock Farseer. That will get you well on your way.

Like you, I'm relatively new. I've been at it since late March of this year, so a few months. Sooner than you think, you'll start to get more powerful enemies to fight and you'll wonder why it is taking you forever to kill them and more times than not you have to take off running.

Also, you'll find that you die INSTANTLY in any combat zone.

Engineering is the reason.

You can have a bit of fun for now, but when you hit that brick wall, you'll know it's time to give it up and start unlocking engineers. When you do hit the wall, my advice is:
  • Outfit that Mk III for laser mining.
  • Mine until you make enough money to buy the Keelback.
  • Outfit the Keelback for laser mining.
  • Mine until you get enough for the Python.
The Python is your key to literally everything else in the game. It is a fantastic mining ship, a fantastic passenger ship (Robigo Mine runs in it will net you around 80 million per hour plus materials for engineering) and it's very good at cargo runs.

The Python is the Swiss Army Knife of this game. With it, the rest of everything in the game moves to within arms reach. The proof? Check me out. I'm gotten all of it 4 months.

Ones Mileage May Vary with this advice - I try to use as little engineering as possible...

Fair enough, but consider that you've been at it roughly 4 times longer than I have and I've almost caught up to you in everything except trading.
I'm def taking the slow road.

The only reason my trading is so high is due to the Golconda Tritium CG in June where I went from Elite II to Elite V over the course of 3 days of play sessions (total of 8 to 10 hours or so of play time).

ETA: Opportuniteis like that don't come along very often...apparently...

It can't be denied that engineering results in a ship of increased capability & protection. "Necessary" is not a word I would use. It's a choice. I also played for over a year without any engineering. I explored and discovered all manner of things in/about the game, I learned the game, I gathered along the way.* The pace and course is completely up to all of us. I'm all about playing ED to have fun- whatever role/course that means today. Yesterday is gone; today is here to have more fun.

I remember feeling like I had plateaued, and was very happy when I could confidently defeat those pesky, interdicting anaconda NPC pirates that I couldn't best without the help of local security forces showing up, and a pretty long battle. Just a little engineering made that possible without using the tactic of running and re-engaging. Was that a cool moment? Yes, of course it was. Was I ever really at-risk of losing a ship to them before that moment? No. Control of the situation and moment-to-moment decision-making was all mine even then.

RES combat and Combat-Zone combat are certainly different activities in ED, with the latter having more formidable opponents. Just wait until you first try an elite-level wing mission to go knock off a pirate...
I still remember when first starting out...
a) I was so careful in even Low RES sites because it seemed really difficult. That, predictably, has passed.
b) I dabbled in a CZ in Upaniklis during the Golconda 'event,' basically pestering the enemy faction and running when needed. This was right after I parked my Sidewinder for the Cobra Mk-III. I scuttled missions and dropped delivery cargoes in the CZ in order to flop their INF in the system. Was it meaningful? Did I know much or anything about the BGS? Who cares?! I had a lot of fun in that un-engineered ship. Did I upset others or their plans doing these things? I have no idea. :)

Have fun out there, CMDRs! 🚀

* This, as it turned out, served me very well when I began needing all of those Mats, encoded goodies, etc.

Just scan all ships around. I just cycle through them via the 'R' key. look towards them and wait a moment. If it is shown "wanted" feel free to fire. No wait for the security needed. But they will help anyway. If you are looking for a wing or team to bounty hunt just add me on Discord: Imo#0428. :)
