Elite: An old persons view...

I started playing Elite on the BBC Micro, when the ships and planets were all wire-frame. Even then the game was thrilling and exciting.

At that time, it never crossed my mind that I'd still be enjoying the game in my old age (now 64). Even more so that I'd be playing elite with a joystick and throttle, and immersed in full 360 degree gameplay in 3D Virtual Reality.

Sometimes I think that nowadays players are far too quick to be critical of the perceived shortcomings of the game.

If you compare the quality of Elite now to when I played it in my youth, you would see that the game today is one of the most wonderful of creations that has ever been coded for players to enjoy.

It is such a shame that many players have turned their backs on the game and no longer spend time to enjoy it.

I still get an enormouse amount of thrill every time I sit in the pilot seat and launch myself into space.

Today's graphics are breathtaking compared to how the game played in my youth. I guess, many youngsters do not realise how lucky they are to be able to venture to all four corners of the galaxy, equipped with beautiful ships, and to see such glorious sights... And all from the comfort of their armchair.

How anyone can say they have gotten bored of the game is beyond me. I have watched it grow, over the years, beyond anything I could imagine in my youth and now I just absolutely love it.

Elite is by far the best Space SIM ever created; and FDev really should be congratulated for all their efforts.

Share your thoughts... It would be nice to see a thread filled with positive vibes.

I was wandering around in Odyssey yesterday and had a lucky run of landings at sunset/sunrise on atmos planets - very nice. And the previous night I was running through the dark to exit a CZ and happened across some plants, no night vision so it was quite a shock, all good stuff in Odyssey (y)

I begun playing ELITE back in 1986 on the Commodore 64 when I was 15. Now I am 50 years old and I play ELITE Dangerous for eight (!) years, making around 9500 hours in game. I think when we were young we probably had a lot more phantasy/imagination and we had to have this because of the limitations of the computers back then. You often knew that behind a single pixel in space there was a greater idea because it was impossible to display anything properly. Today it is very different. Graphics wise you can display almost anything, but you also soon realise that behind the phantastic graphics there is nothing more to find. No great ideas. Nothing. At least this is my feel.

I didnt become bored, I became annoyed with the game. The grind and nickel-and-dime structure of the rewards. The powercreep, nerf to vaniillla n and overreliance on RNG did pretty much the rest, as well as annoyances when stuff stopped working or bugs ruined yet another couple hours of game session. It's one of he few games I regret spending 100s of hours in.

Yes, we know.

With my age of 40 I might not fully qualify as an old gamer, but I still love the game.

I actually never played the original or the other Elite games. In the nineties I was more of a Wing Commander player. Somehow Elite never found its way on my Amiga and later my PC.

Always were fascinated by the Wing Commander Privateer games and also played Freelancer. The X-series never appealed to me for some reason. Tried it multiple times.

Then came Elite: Dangerous and it changed everything for me. A game more on the hard science side of things with an interesting background lore that just fueled my imagination. It seemed it was just the game I was looking for, without even looking for it.

I love the freedom and the vastness of space it gives me, the moments of excitement and of loneliness when standing on a remote planet.

Have to admit, I took several and longer pauses from the game here and there, but eventually I come back.

I do not care about new features or wether there will be new ships, ship interiors or whatever at some point or not. I learned that it is more fulfilling to just accept games as they are and not what they could be.

Elite is fun to me now and that is everything I could ask for. And if they add any new stuff, the better.

I retired at 65 and started playing Elite Dangerous shortly thereafter. It filled the time and helped me transition to retired life. It also became more than just a game to me. It's more like a hobby -- something that is just part of my life these days.

I'm 71 now and still playing, and enjoying, the game. Sure there are things I could complain about, but man...no other game comes close to this one in terms of sheer fun and the feeling of being in space.

See you here in 6 more years :)

I'll be 57 by the end of this year and I've been playing Elite Dangerous for almost 23 months. My imagination fills in many gaps and I'm having a grand old time.

The big thing about this game, especially since Odyssey released, is that if, by chance, I get bored doing something or just feel like doing something else, there are so many varied activities to choose from.

As Codger said above, its become a part of my life now, but in my case, it is the only game I play.

Im quickly approaching 49 in a couple of weeks and have been playing Elite since it first started back in '84, I still dive into ED when I have time I dont have the time at present to devote hours a day to it but I do fly occasionally and have a few nice screenshots of plants and things ive found in my travels. Its nice to be still enjoying the whole thing after all this time as well, I would have loved the Thargoids to be on a more friendly stance maybe with a universal translator or something being developed this would be much better than the bomb the aliens into submission narrative we have now. Back in 84 we were forced to shoot them as it was the only thing we could do as they attacked immediately on entering the area now they have done loads of attempts to not attack but we always shoot them.

Agreed op
Your post nails it.
But times change. Devs change. They run with something. It backfires.
This is normal?
The spirit of elite is exploring.
Odyssey did absolutely nothing in that regard.
I've grown to like exobiology. But it's not enough.
I love the game. Just wish it had gone in the core direction. Also the oversimplified mapping of systems which raised hell back when the dss fss was introduced...I'm in agreement it's too simplistic.

I both agree and disagree...
