Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club Presents - Chicken Run: Crash Harder (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 6)

Was hoping to submit another entry after some refitting at Jameson's, but as I was coming into land at Noriega, the USBs my control system (X52 Pro and CH Pedals) decided to die on me. Net result: Crashed into wall at Noriega, got destroyed by station security and sent to the detention centre. Now can't get the USB ports on the PC to respond, nor the H.O.T.A.S. or pedals, so it looks like Buckyball Racing may be off the cards for me for a while.
No way ... damn that's really annoying. I guess you've tried using different USB ports? (e.g. front and back will run off different boards).

Yep, neither the X52 Pro nor the pedals get detected in the other ports. I have got a spare X52 which I've got working, but I'm not going to have time to set the custom bindings back to what I'm used to and get another attempt. Plus the fact I've been using pedals for the past 7 years, so going back to twist on the stick for yaw is going to throw me right out.

If you have a matching joystick you can save yourself some time setting up your binds again. I had to do this yesterday after updating firmware on my stick.

There is a file named "Custom.X.0.binds" (Where X = 3 for Horizons, 4 for Odyssey) and hopefully a file that ends in ".backup" in
Code:
%localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Back up the entire folder before launching the game.

Set a custom bind to get the new device ID.

Look in the "BindingLoadingErrors.log" file for the old device ID. I think it's one line per entry in the Custom.binds file.
Code:
Failed to find GUID for device: 05FD3300

Rename the Custom.X.0.binds then open in a text editor. It's an XML file.
Look for your custom bind and note the "Binding Device."
Code:
    <RollAxisRaw>
        <Binding Device="28DE11FF" Key="GamePad_LStickX" />
        <Inverted Value="0" />
        <Deadzone Value="0.15000001" />
    </RollAxisRaw>
Copy the .backup file (or the Cusom.X.0.binds file from your backup) back in to the Bindings folder.
Open in a new editor and do a find/replace for the device ID from the error.log with the new device ID.

From above:
Code:
%s/05FD3300/28DE11FF/g

Repeat for as many devices as you have.

If you are switching to an entirely different device the axis names might be different and you'll need to to set everything up from scratch. But if you are just moving to a spare stick or updating something the above saves a lot of time.

I'll do it for the fame then :D
and so did I ... A late entry for sure, ready for 10th + place on leaderboard.

But there is some special reason for beeing late. On the 22nd of June (07 :cool: ) a little co-pilot had a healthy landing in my little, now growing, family. Yet this mostly harmeless guy thinks most of the day about the "milky way" 🍼 and how to splatter all the possible bio-waste 💩as much as possible in the surroundings. So time was rare and all the attention to the galaxy lost. As time came by we settled ourselves and so in a tiny time window, without any practise done and only with the rough pre-planings in my mind from 2 weeks ago I set sail to go for this run. But first I needed to wrap the Maxi Cosi to the co-pilots chair in the cobra.
I would say, this was the reason for my oversecured flight style - but the truth is, I was very much afraid for loosing the up-thrust momentum. One must know, in FA-off you cannot simbly look down on high G planets. You will fall like a rock and so I needed to navigate blind with the little compass to my left.

At the end of the day, little co-pilot is still sleeping on my chest (could not convince him to go into the Maxi Cosi) and I reached the finish line in one piece.

Anyhow, fun as allways and a little warning at the end. When my little fellow reaches Elite, he will burn ass in this competition and you guys will cry for mercy 😎👶

Just glancing through the entries I've had today. There's been 9 so far. Can any of you be sure your position is safe...

Nooooooooooooooo.

These crashes! 😭 😱 😠 💢

@Ozric I'm hoping this qualifies as landed...

Honestly the crashes over these last few days have been the worst I've ever seen.

and so did I ... A late entry for sure, ready for 10th + place on leaderboard.

Huge congratulations! I'll sure they'll be stealing you ship startup codes in no time in no time :D

I'd say almost certainly not. I just managed to catch this video of Bruski landing his Cobra on 7% hull ... I'm afraid ... VERY afraid.

And I also have to report that I've given this race my last attempts. An afternoon of umitigated disasters in an unlimited Imperial Courier. Like they say, when life gives you lemons ... make a blooper reel!

Good luck everyone (and thanks Ozric for a truly fantastic race!).

Oh, and congratulations to @CMDR Sir Boundness on the new co-pilot!

Well, that's all I have time for today, and I'm counting my lucky stars that there was even time to make several attempts this afternoon. :( Sadly, my runs were marred by two figurative and one literal crash. :( :( :(

I'll be submitting this morning's sole attempt, and throwing myself on @Ozric's mercy that the literal last second crash to desktop still counts as a landing. Thank you for hosting this race! And congrats to @CMDR Sir Boundness on the new copilot!

You all saw how it ended... now witness what came before... in about an hour!

Well, that was a frustrating weekend: there was much bouncing of spaceships off the scenery, profanity was loud and inventive (my wife says she's never heard some of those combinations :mad:) and the laptop was nearly thrown out of the window 2 or 3 times :mad::poop::mad:

I couldn't beat Thursday's Courier run, so that one's submitted; and there's a Cobra run from today - with all the bases, no chickens! My final crash was at Weber, at 3 minutes past midnight game time. It had been going well, so I was preparing my arguments/pleas for the run to be allowed... Must remember not to tempt the gods of Buckyball like that again!

I have crashed at every site except King's, no idea how I missed that one out but 3g must be about my sweet spot :unsure:

Big thanks to @Ozric for running an excellent race, thanks to everyone that's put videos up, and finally congrats to @CMDR Sir Boundness on the new Lt Cmdr!

Now it is all over I just want to thank @Ozric for a cracking race.
I entered this race knowing that I was never great at planetary landings, but in my usual madcap style I went at it with gusto. To my utter surprise I started to get it, I really did. For this alone the loss of some 40 ships was worth it. By the end I was having a ball.
For me the highlight was doing a Bruski to Bruski.. That was utterly hilarious, it really was. I do not know if he has done any better since, but it was still worth it.
I was also very surprised early on that no one had done a chicken to get a decent time on the board. For me it made sense as I was taking way too many losses on the last two stations. My speed was good but execution of high g in the Cobra was terrible. I got over that of course in the end. I learned "gentle", a very new concept for me.

So thanks @Ozric for a brilliant time.

As we await the results I want to thank Ozric very much for staging what has been a welcome, diverting and fun experience that has taught me a few things and not least given me a new insight into just how capable an unengineered Cobra MkIII can really be!
Congratulations to those who win and make the podium but a special well done to everyone who managed to enter! o7. This has to be one of, perhaps the most, challenging races the Buckyball Racing Club has ever done. Normally your enemy is the clock, your own handling of your ship and maybe network traffic and flight controllers giving you a tricky landing pad. This time it was Einstein! There was a certain expectation that a rebuy was imminent at every stop and that you would be doing well to survive the distance. Coming out of glide at Weber and feeling my Adder drop like a rock was a startling experience (even though it is heavily and specifically engineered with lightweight parts). It took practice to learn some semblance of control and I particularly applaud those who attempted high-g landings in large class ships.
See you at the Mischief Mile!
Fly fast!

There was indeed a flurry of activity over the last day and a half, and a lot of entries in the Regulation Class. Before we get into it I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part. Not matter how you did, no matter how many ships you destroyed, times you cursed your computer or yourself, you've made this race awesome! And it makes me very happy to see so many people taking part in what is arguably one of the hardest races we've had over the years. And so once again a big thanks to Ashnak for originally coming up with the idea.

So let's work our way through the Regulation Class and start with a bang. Cmdr. Wotherspoon entered the fray with a determined glare and set about creating a good story. The landing at Snow Moon was fine and next up was the approach to Korniyenko Terminal, but just as he was about to enter Orbital Cruise he crashed out into normal space 😲 It turns out that because Coriolis doesn't have a section on their website for the Planetary Approach Suite, and despite the fact that the majority of the race involves approaching planets, he thought he would sell it :D What followed was a 13 minute detour to go to a station with outfitting, buy and fit a Planetary Approach Suite, and get back to where he left off. I must say full credit for not giving up, and ploughing on regardless!
We also had an entry from the other half of the award winning (may not have actually won any awards) Galnet News Digest Cmdr. Beetlejude, who like many others had some struggles with the crashes that have been plaguing Odyssey recently. She fought through the crash and managed to finish without shields, but it was just in last place. However not prepared to accept the crashes getting the upper hand, Beetlejude took to the course once again and despite being too fast of Glide at the Korniyenko and losing about 4 minutes boosting to the stations, she still managed to improve by almost 10 minutes which lifted her a few places.

Cmdr. Draig Seren managed to get around the course, although they did have to skip out the last two ports as things were getting a little dicey for them. Finishing with a time of just under 55 minutes after penalties. Next up and being plagued by nightmares of Chickens chasing him was Arrowroot. Determined to put them behind him he managed to complete a full circuit in the Cobra, well done for persevering with it and he was rewarded with an improvement of almost 4 minutes moving up a couple of spots.
Next up was the original host of the race as Ashnak took to the course, maybe feeling the pressure a bit or maybe knowing what horrors awaited him, he ploughed on fighting off an interdiction and ended up under the 50 minute mark. Cmdr. FearlessF21 was back again and determined to improve their time, although they were apparently distracted with something else and had an interdiction... Still they managed an improvement and bumped up a place.
Two new entrants came up next in Cmdrs. Rocky Star and Sir Boundness. Rocky had a fairly smooth run and took shields around to make sure of a finish, which they managed in under 45 minutes. And then Sir Boundness rocked up doing a Shieldless run but entirely FA-Off, we really should start including bonuses for completing a race entirely FA-Off, it was highly impressive and they do admit that their 'up-thruster finger' was burning after the run finished, just a few seconds away from breaking 44 minutes.

Cmdr. jspace also entered the fray on the last day, turned off the shields on the Cobra and set about proving the name of the ship 'Speed Optional' wrong. They did a very good job at it too, and although just missing out on the Crash Pilot bonus with 14% hull, they finished in just under 41 minutes and in 9th place becoming the first person outside of the 1 point club. Cmdr. Stevenson was back on the course and the gloves and shields were off as she tore around the course. Her run was 40 seconds slower than previously, but because she managed to get the Crash Pilot bonus it catapulted her ahead of three people above her. Cmdr. Caelum Incola was up next with a new entry which suffered from an obscured jump and bad piloting (his words not mine), but with the Crash Pilot bonus it was still good enough to secure Fourth place on the leaderboard.

And that leaves us with one more entry, and that's from Cmdr. Bruski. He had not been having a great time of things in the regulation class up to this point, but if there's one thing you can rely on it's that Bruski is going to pull something out of the bag, and have a good celebration ;) It was a fairly tense run in places and he took the approach to Weber quite cautiously and spent a while acquainting himself with the landing pad to secure the bonus. All that was left was to wave hello to Alec as he came in for the final landing and a very impressive 31 minute and 5 second time! Huge congratulations!

Leaving your podium as
1st - Bruski
2nd - Alec Turner
3rd - Sulu

Now we move onto the Unlimited Class. And first up we have an improvement from Arrowroot once again, feeling a bit more comfortable with the course now they managed to knock just over 3 minutes off their time. Coming in just in front of them and showing some real determination once again by bringing one of the goliaths to the course was Cmdr. jspace in a Type 9. Nothing scares ATC on a high g planet to death like a Shieldless Type 9 plummeting out of the sky towards you! Bravely they also managed to get the Crash Pilot bonus and although the decision was made to Chicken out of Weber, they finished in just 4 seconds behind their time in Regulation. Cmdr. Epaphus was back again and determined to secure his position, and he did manage to improve by almost 2 minutes, which kept him ahead of jspace's entry. A side not at this point to say that Cmdr. Stevenson was the first person who managed to get out of the 1 point club.

Next up we had Caelum entering the Unlimited in the ever heatproof Dolphin, if you're going to be crashing into planets you want to be doing it in style. His run here was a very solid entry, securing the Crash Pilot bonus and managing a time of 28 minutes. Cmdr. Sulu was up once again and managing a small improvement that saw him fend off Caelum's entry although slipping down one place from the previous update. That was because Cmdr. Aken was back and with a swap to the DBX he managed to knock almost 5 minutes off of his previous time and finish ahead of Alec in 4th place. There was no changes in the podium places from Saturday and so your top three are:

1st - Shaye Blackwood
2nd - Captain-MD
3rd - Bruski

I think I am still waiting an entry from Colin, so there may be some additions, I'll leave it a day or so for any straggling entries, as long as the run took place in time.

Once again thank you everyone who took part. You're all awesome!

Fly fast o7

Wow ... just awesome. I'm going to have to read that again at my leisure when I'm not about to run for a train but massive congrat's to Bruski (grrr) and generally everyone who took part, and huge thanks to Ozric for hosting such a fantastic (and competitive) race.

For what it's worth (not as much now it's a minute and a half slower than the fastest time) ... here's a video of my Cobra run for your entertainment and enlightenment. Feel free to ask if there's anything I do that you don't understand. I may be able to explain my actions, then again I might not.
