The original game mechanic was:
- You died, you lost everything, and started over.
- You had the option to *BUY* an emergency escape pod, which was consumed on use. (i.e. you could lose your ship once, before having to repurchase).
- That was it... (The idea was you couldn't make backups of your 'Saves', so you lost once you lost it all.
I think they should get back to that mechanic, or expand the universe.
Options like:
- You have to 'BUY INSURANCE BEFORE' you die. (Which removes some of the risk I guess)
- You have to 'BUY AN ESCAPE POD', which protects you, but not your ship (Not sure the value in that for this game).
- You have to 'BUY AN ADEQUATE LIFE SUPPORT', which again protects you, but then another player would have to rescue you.
There were several games that had this 'You die you start over again' mentality.
- Wing Commander (Did initially start off like this).
- StarFlight (FANTASTIC GAME)
- Most Recently was: Steel Battalion
But when MMOs started doing it, people went FREAKING NUTS!!
"Earth and Beyond" (For those who played this, points to you!) used to penalize you with a 'If you die, you have to wait 'x' amount of time before you are recovered." Which as crappy as it sounds, I kinda liked, because it kept people from doing reckless things. But they changed it before release. (Which release only lasted a matter of months).
"Galaxies" had a 'you revive as a Clone', but if you had special characters, (Like 'Jedi'), Jedi's could not be cloned... PERIOD... And after so many deaths, you suffered from 'Clone Imperfections', which hampered your abilities. Plus, you had to 'Update your Clone'. Again, this mechanic changed before Beta was completed.
I would like to see a little more of this in Elite, but not to upset too many players.
My fear is, we'll have 'Ironman Mode', 'Open world mode', 'Solo Mode', that everyone's gonna be scattered across 3 different universes in three different game modes, when we really want everyone to just play into one to maximize the experience!
I think that:
1) Open world: "Normal" mode, pay for Insurance upon ship death.
2) Ironman Mode: Banks award a 'Credit Multiplier Bonus' for not having Insurance, but Commanders can purchase Life Pods and 'Better Life Support'
3) Solo: Banks award a 'Credit Penalty' and you have to pay for Life Pod AND Insurance.
I also think that they need to add:
- Commanders can be 'rescued' in their ships (as opposed to Fuel tank restores), and towed to bases, by PCs and NPCs. (Including the risk of Pirates taking their ship to a 'Chop Shop'.)
- Commanders can be 'rescued' in their life pods. (Maybe sold as 'Slaves' by pirates)
- Commanders who die, all need to be presented with a 'restoration wait time', which shows them being towed back to space dock, or recovered and revived. You gotta put in some penalty for death.
- Commanders should get a 'Generation tag'. Like 'Capn Snuggie the XII'th, to show how many times they've been, errr, 'Revived'.
Multiple ship ownership is cool, and that needs to be a game play element. Like you can go off into the black, die, and then your descendant come back and use the ships you have left.
Again, I want a mechanic that fits the game, but doesn't make players throw their controllers into their screens.
I'd like all 'modes' to be in 'the same universe', to encourage more play, but the rewards have to be there for the player, not penalties that drive the player away.
Maybe 'Solo' mode can be the same universe as us all, but you only have permits to go into the 'Core Systems', where griefing is met with 'EVERY VIPER IN THE SYSTEM COMES AFTER YOU'...
I want those challenging games to come back, and not cower down after a few months of "I'm gonna stop playing (waaaahhhh)" posts.
I'd rather have "Wow, I got shot up, ejected, and picked up by a player who took me to space port, and then protected me as I took my spare ship to go salvage my wreckage, where I got most of my gear back!" (Everyone remember when you could 'scoop' an exploded ship for 'Metals'?
Sorry to rant, but long live the challenge of Elite: Dangerous!
End of Rant...
