Windows 7 Compatibility

Well, 3.5" disks weren't really that floppy. 5 1/4's, now they flopped... but not as much as 8" ones. And they were positively rigid when compared to punched tape.
Ahhh Punch Tape - I felt so high-tech wandering around the school playground with a reel of punch tape in my pocket! Logging in to the main frame by acoustic phone coupler and running your tape on the tele-type and then waiting for the response: "Syntax Error Line 20"

Oooh the nostalgia!

It’s still Direct3D 11. A Direct3D 11 implementation using Vulkan, but the game still uses through the same D3D 11 code. So of course it won’t be any faster, in fact it’ll probably be slower as the overhead of two graphics APIs is greater than one.
and yet, in many instances that overhead is nullified by improvements in executing the vulkan code in driver vs dx when run in windows on the same machine. Not always, but it happens where the game is actually faster in dxvk (this can even be tested within windows as you can use dxvk in windows). The overhead of the wrapper is extremely little.

The point though, is that to take advantage fully of something like dx12 or vulkan, you have to build the rendering pipeline around these api's from the ground up. With elite, if we were to imagine them supporting DX12 at this point, fdev would likely just substitute calls to the existing api with calls to the new api ...and that's exactly what dxvk does. So I would expect no difference.

But the idea is moot anyway because the premise is incorrect. DX11 is not why odyssey runs so much slower than horizons. Simply switching api's isn't going to resolve the problems and if they're not willing to rewrite the rendering pipeline to fix odyssey under the same api they're used to, it doesn't make any sense why they would do it to support dx12.

Greetings Commanders,

...we will no longer be testing Windows 7 compatibility for any future Elite Dangerous updates. As a result, we cannot guarantee future updates or compatibility for Windows 7 users.

Greetings,

Ok, let's get serious...

For Windows 7 users what is Frontier saying? Is there an update coming that won't work in Windows 7? Did the programmers adding more to ED find something that Windows 7 will get a black adder? This is an unusual post for a gaming company wondering why they posted it. I'll expect more with other Frontier posts about updates and if they will work in Windows 7.

So how long for a Windows 7 player have before the game quits? What did Frontier find that Windows 7 won't like? What will Frontier support versus 8, 10 or 11 or maybe some 13 in the future? What is Frontier going to support Windows PCs?

In history Frontier dropped Apple and Macs without any warning with a similar message saying moving on it won't work. Have a nice day.

Frontier has a history of never answering any of these questions so if and when I purchase a new computer to play this game maybe I should reflect upon should I do it playing since 1985. What do you think running ED in Windows 7? Is it worth buying a new computer to keep playiing? We will all have to figure that out versus real life and relationships.

Regards

They aren't testing the game on Windows 7 anymore so while it might still work it's no longer officially supported.
How long until it breaks depends on how long it takes until a Frontier programmer uses some feature that only exists in 8.1 and up, or until Visual Studio stops generating binaries compatible with 7, like it did with XP.
And if you can purchase a computer running Windows 7 in 2022, then it's not a new computer.

Hehe!

Yes, and playing noughts and crosses with students at the local college via acoustic coupler where the game moves were passed back and forth. One move took one week as it needed to programmed in in BASIC - a weeks' homework for the computer studies class.

Good luck with the backlash. When I stopped supporting Windows 7 for EDMC there was quite the wailing and gnashing of teeth from a vocal minority.
That was the very reason I started to consider Windows 10. I wasn't happy about switching at the time, but I finally had to accept the change was necessary. Although I haven't played ED in over a year now, I'm quite happy with the new PC I built. Thanks for the "push" :)

Well the good news is that people still running 7 are likely using an older CPU that can't even run 11 due to the TPM requirement.

There is many an instructional video on youtube on how to install Windows 11 on unsupported devices. It runs just fine with the obvious exception you won't be able to use programs that utilise TPM functionality.

It was hard for me but I said goodbye to Win7 with Win10 Pro 1909 (because Group Policy Editor is a must). I've made a few mods to it. Winaero Tweaker, Open Shell and a few others brings me back to the Win7 interface but with a more modern look.

Greetings Commanders,

To continue focus on providing the best experience for the more commonly used systems, we will no longer be testing Windows 7 compatibility for any future Elite Dangerous updates. As a result, we cannot guarantee future updates or compatibility for Windows 7 users.

That’s great. Sticking a computer on Windows 7 doesn’t make any sense these days, so it’s good that games also move on to newer OS.
