In 10-20 years the hot space game will probably be something completely unrelated to SC or ED, which hasn't even been thought up yet, by a developer that's able to deliver a working product in a reasonable time frame and doesn't just peddle dreams. There will be threads on Spectrum dismissing it and claiming SC will show them how it's done. And this thread will still be here to give future generations of SC noobs somewhere to post their "have you heard about this new space game, Star Citizen? omg I was able to get out of the seat and walk around the ship!!!" moment.Where I think in ten to twenty more years, even if this CIG/SC boondoggle is still around stuck, it'll be Frontier's ED or whatever continued iteration that will be the "everything" spacesim game advancement of more combined features within its achieved scope and structure and uniquely succeeded ambition.

TLDW: PES has been added to the dev build. Everything was on fire, but it's all fine now. (Some things are still on fire).
Intro: Still no news on 3.18 features. Have this slower news instead...
1m30s - Daft coffee cup clip and talk of encouraging players to clean up the servers janitor style.
2m30s - PES now in the game dev branch used by all devs. Biggest achievement of last 3 months that they stabilised it enough to add. V tough / crazy. Crazy meaning: 'Everything being on fire'. It 'touches on every sub-system in the game'. 'Transit was busted, stuff was persisting in the wrong location, you couldn't log into the game...'. New login flow etc. Timing issues (on weaker machines [?]) particularly hard to track down. Dev machines crashing and them needing to fix in 'real time' rather than being in their R&D bubble. Great to have it in the hands of those who can adapt it for players now.
5m - Right now in bug fixing mode. Feature parity & stabilisation. It's not polish. New team is breaking it up to work in cloud, to get to PTU stage. See how many players and entities they can handle etc.
6m40s - 100 player count didn't have effect, as they thought it might initially, because same number of objects stored regardless. More entities are changed, but storage the same whether 50 players on 2 servers or 100 on 1 or whatever.
7m45s - Very happy with his data feedback graphs vs old tech. Working on 'character repair' (for single item corrections etc rather than full reset).
9m - They're banging on it to get it into 3.18 properly. (Mimes banging a peg into a hole?). Not going to gamble on a date. It's running in the cloud. But doesn't want to send players into the fire.
9m50s - Don't expect obvious changes. There will still be wipes. But hopes they will have 'consistent data', unlike now, so those wipes won't be necessary. And losing mobiglass and eyes shouldn't happen. (Confirms the 'if don't have eyes you don't see markers' correlation?).
10m45s - 'Stuff will persist'. But they honestly don't know what that means once players get their hands on things. They have life cycle plans and clean up routines, but player behaviour will greatly affect how the tech functions.
11m05s - As a player, what you put on one server will stay there until manual server wipes. By default will just persist though.
12m - So next step server meshing, but for now stressing on scaling it, the last 10% which takes 90% of the time etc...

All the 3.18 goodies, like salvage, to be covered next. Plus talks with the new new mocap guys. Plus a mystery [Chris] guest, if you're very lucky.
Jorunn...as usual...just shifts the blame back onto the backers for being impatient though. He's still quoting Ci~G's company lineWhat's that? Jorunn not going full blown shill? Did i sleep through the apolocalypse?
Yeah. Quite obvious almost since the beginning CIG workforce is probably 95% art and marketing staff....And I've had to put up with years of other folk telling me that Turbulent were just the website guys who did a few hospital additions for the PU when I kept reading between the lines and reporting what I was seeing. I guess I can take it that my assumptions about Turbulent's contributions were a little more correct than I was given credit for then?
Turbulent didn't go hiring half of Eidos and Ubisoft's engineers and technical programmers to make hospital addons...they just employed a few of Eidos and Ubisoft's artists and designers to do that as well. The idiot Roberts has commandeered practically all of Ci~G's available internal dev teams to work on Sqn 404, Turbulent are carrying the can for all the technical work behind the PU development...But I'm sure I mentioned that often enough as well![]()
Jorunn's expression barely changes from the somewhat-robotic smile throughout the entire stream. It's creepily terrifying

Though the main problems persist: Chris and his close court that are still in charge. How many months before their mismanagement spoil and ruin Turbulent staff expertise and efforts...
Notes on a Misadventure said:Following on from Morph Silvan & Tomato's troubles here.
Space reclaimer mission. NPCs look standard shonk. Some player desync. Silvan gets his first ever kill in game [??]. Textures don't load at one point. Nice atmospherics in the 'salvaged' X-wing wing etc. Only one person does self destruct as they don't want to die running into each other.
Lol, Morph gets incapped in that way anyway (or by the elevator)...

Reclaimer elevator v buggy...
Sylvan has started self destruct but doesn't know how to get out of seat.... He dies...
Jeez...pay the Canadians a bit of due diligence at least...I for one are quite glad they're there doing what they do since Ci~G are all but AWOL dealing with the idiot's vanity project. They've pulled Ci~G's singed behind out of the fire with their content work for the PU alone...never mind tackling the backend focused PES and the work on server mashupNah you're still overstating it man. If that were true they'd be handling the current attempts to get salvage and cargo working for 3.18. Or the EUPU team work on engineering & life support (which Crewe hopes will finally unblock ship modularity). Or all of Tony Z's mad plans for the economy & dynamic events & emergent NPC POI. Etc etc etc.
Turbulent are definitely PU-focused, and filling big gaps left by CIG desperately trying to get SQ42 working. Both tech & content gaps. But they haven't suddenly become the primary PU stakeholders or anything. (And as such brought a new injection of competence to its overall direction, as I think you're hoping)
They're just plugging gaps. The same as the rest of the PU teams
This is the key point, ay.
I did like Benoit's 'we can't say how persistence will actually play out yet' and 'all of this is a sideshow, the main thing is: will server meshing work as planned' pragmatism though. Leaving Chris's coffee cup talk sitting in a forest looking silly
---
EDIT: A suitable metaphor could be the new Reclaimer missions that Turb added in 3.17. Atmospheric and promising, but ultimately undercut by all the old legacy bugs and half-built PU systems. (Unresponsive & killer lifts, gravity toggles not working correctly, getting trapped in the chair after setting the ship destruct sequence etc). Its not like they get a fresh start![]()
If I was investing in a Space related PEZ dispenser, I know which one I'd be backing, with a better ROI and way cheaper cost to launch ;-)
Usually I ignore the fanboy predictions. But you are one of the worst fanboys of SC and I think you are quite spot on there.Jeez...pay the Canadians a bit of due diligence at least...I for one are quite glad they're there doing what they do since Ci~G are all but AWOL dealing with the idiot's vanity project. I'll let John Crewe, the vehicle experience team and the three devs left on the EUPU team have their bit for the ship stuff...but ships don't make the game work, even for Sqn 404.
I've got another prediction for ya...as we roll into next year, an expanding Turbulent studio will assume more and more of the responsibility for PU focused stuff as Ci~G continue to fart around with the further delayed magnum opus![]()
