Infinity Battlescape

Just gave it a go recently...almost forgot I backed it

Anyway, it was fun...mildly satisfying. Lots more to for the dev team to do.

Agree, the game feels like it's still far away from completion, but I find the flying quite satisfying already. Not sure about it's success, every time I try it there's rarely more than a couple of people playing.

I especially like the solution they implemented for speed restrictions, the speed is progressively capped the closest you get to objects or planetary surfaces. This allows speed to be properly reduced for combat situations, while at the same time allowing for easy high speed travelling. Flying over planet surfaces is fantastic in this game, you just need to gain a bit of altitude and you can go very fast, feels fantastic.

I wish ED had this system for travelling, we could fly over the planet surface to all planetary POIs without that irritating need to go back to supercruise and then back down again to avoid the static speed cap. It's the reason why I rarely visit more than one POI per planet.

There's been a couple of recent updates which have added features such as rank progression, competitive ratings, couple of new weapons. Slightly less recent updates introduced ship loadouts and a customizable HUD. I think they're aiming for a release late this year, maybe early next year, but don't quote me on that. They've stated VR is in their plans but not high priority before release.

I have found the game consistently fun to play even with low player counts. When it comes to the flight model and general feel of zero-G 6DoF combat this game is second to none.

I loved the original Infinity: Quest for Earth game (which is strikingly similar to what Elite provided), I played quite a bit on the Infinity: Combattest (still have the files at home and set up a server sometimes), but Infinity: Battlescape never caught my interest, to narrow in scope, although it is on my steam wishlist and I check on it from time to time - VR would be tipping the scale to buy :)

So just what is this game? Is it a big MMO with all the "treat the game like a full time job" baggage that comes with that, or is it more like ED's CQC or other casual PvP games like Overwatch? If it's a more casual, "Come on in and join an ongoing battle for an hour at your leisure" type of game, I may be interested. It's 50% off on Steam right now, thus why I'm asking. I already have plenty of MMOs (space and otherwise) competing for my time, so the idea of a more casual "Overwatch In Space" game appeals to me, if this is what Infinity Battlescape actually is.

Much more casual, you jump into battles that last several minutes, and if there is any carry-over between battles it’s I guess something like points you can spend next time.
I haven’t followed it for a while, last year it was still pretty rough and with a higher percentage of bots than players, which probably indicates a smaller player base than might be healthy for the game. Always fun though.

Closer to Overwatch but not exactly. Closest comparison would be something like Planetside. It's a large, on-going, several hours long battle that spans the moon system of a gas giant (later will be expanded to a star system). You can jump in and out. Every battle influences the eventual outcome of the war. Then one side wins and it starts over.

The one thing especially that reminds me of Overwatch are the ship classes, which play genuinely differently and perform very different roles in a battle, and the rock-paper-scissors dynamic between them. In the rare case there are enough players online on both sides, teamwork becomes very important.

Maybe my choice of words was confusing! I called it a several hours long battle but really it's a series of battles each lasting minutes. I think in game it's called a round.

EDIT: The actual term is match.

I'm very tempted by the game, but it kinda feels like abandonware... Is it getting updates like my other favorite space games (see sig), or is it the same game that OA reviewed years ago?

It's still in active development. The team behind it is very small (3 people IIRC) so it's going at a slow but steady pace.

Is this game controller friendly? Ideally I would want it not only to support my controller, but to also allow me to customize it. One of the reasons I was able to fall in love with X4 was the ability to replicate my muscle-memorized Elite control scheme over to X4.

The controls are freely remappable like Elite, I can't really speak for how playable it is on pad as I use a KB+flightstick combo, myself. All the important functions should be accessible through various selection wheels even when they're not mapped so there's no strict need for keyboard or HOTAS.

EDIT: The above pertains to in-flight controls. I'm not actually sure if the non-flight menus like the loadout screen or system map can be used without a mouse.

Unfortunatly this did not get much attention from space game players. I think most of the available $$$ from space game nerds did go to SC. Most other space games that tried to get crowd founding after ED and SC did not go well (maybe DUAL UNIVERSE is an exception). They fail or get peanuts. The scope as PVP is too narrow for my taste. But I can underand why they had to make this changes. I hope they can get it done finally.

A good overview of the game, and why it's still ignored at large:

I agree with the youtuber above, it's wise of the devs not to advertise an unfinished product. Let's see how it goes when they release it and spend some $$ on marketing by then.
PS: I never saw any of the usual griefers going in there, maybe because they cannot shoot at defenseless newbies ? ;)
