Why should I? Im totally fine with odyssey and its performance.
And which competition? Nms looks like a cartoon and sc will probably never leave the alpha state.

I can think of plenty of better space simulation games, but none are persistent first-person open-world MMOs, and half of them are Steam exclusives.
Elite: Dangerous is nearly completely alone in it's particular nice.
Some times it would be nice to see whats changing on the server side list... not just the client ...

Yea I know that paint skins and all DLC has to be put in the client before they can be released on the DLC server side store they leaked that in error but do they have to have images and jpegs made and put on the server months before they are put up for sale as well and added to the server for each twitch stream and friday release...

Versioning seems clear to me, though I've been reading pretty much every single developer post on this so it's kinda banged into my noggin by now.
Horizons 3.8 is what we know today. It will remain accessible to everyone.
Horizons 4.0 is the Odyssey client without on-foot gameplay, and will instance with other Horizons 4.0 users only.
Odyssey 4.0 is Odyssey and will instance with other Odyssey users.
The only thing unclear to me is whether we Odyssey owners will be able to access the Horizons 4.0 client (to play with someone without the DLC), and whether we need to download the entire client again to do so if we can at all.

It doesn’t matter how creative you get, if the Horizons client isn’t capable of displaying a person, then it’s not capable of PEGI 16 content. So again, I don’t understand why that would preclude instancing in space.
Not sure if this answers your question, but 3.8 missions don't carry over to 4.0 and vice versa.
I don't know if it's possible but I for one would like the option to upgrade Horizons 3.8 to 4.0 and completely loose access to 3.8 to gain access to EDH 4.0. I can't even remember the last time I used 3.8 so for me it's not needed, but access to 4.0 would be as I have squadron friends that don't own EDO. Hopefully once todays work is completed and things settle down a bit Fdev can look at this problem and look at possible solutions.

It's like saying that if you play the base game you wont be able to see someone in a Dolphin (a ship introduced in horizons)

Ah but is it the choice between a better simulation or a better game? I have found in the past that really good simulations rarely make really good games, and vice versa, we are basically stuck with mediocre simulations and mediocre games, which may indeed be the best that can be done. Starfield may in fact end up being the best space game (still up in the air about that), and Space Engine may be the best space simulator, but the best game set in a simulated galaxy may still end up being Elite Dangerous.

Can you confirm that this means that ODY owners will not be able to even launch HOR4.0, as the wording here implies? Most of the people replying to others in this thread are getting confused about the difference between launching and instancing, and I think a clarification is in order
Without Horizons 3.x , all the fun places are lost. Such as Bucky Ball racing locations, and all the rest fun and interesting systems discovered in the past 7+ years.
Not to mention the very convenient Crystalline Shard sites.
