Newcomer / Intro what's the most fun way to grind fed rank?

i've watched some youtube guides of how to grind fed rank the fastest. not sure of those are even still up to date. it's these courier missions which aren't necessarily super fun. so i was wondering, what would you say is the most fun way to grind the rep?

i'm currently getting back into the game and thought, hey, maybe as a goal, try to get the corvette. i need rank for that though and i want to have a good time getting there. any suggestions highly appreciated.

Lots of people seem to use Ceos - which has 1 Fed faction. Ranking missions seem to appear randomly on a faction, but only the Fed faction can spawn it so you have a 1 in 5 chance the mission spawns when you want it.

I tend to like aligned systems like (at the moment) LHS 449, Bhaguthians and Wangmin. They all (according to eddb) have only Fed factions, so you are likely to get rank-up missions any time you want them. And you can take any mission (because they're all Fed).

But grinders love Ceos, maybe there's something in it 🤷‍♀️

Grinding and fun don't often go hand in hand, unless its a game that is designed around the grind, like Diablo/Torchlight/etc.

Early on, you don't need to grind much for ranks, just work out of a system with lots of Fed factions. Later on, when progress slows down, it might be worth considering a bit of grind to get it done. Up to you.

Hmmm grind and fun ?? Personally I just flew around the bubble doing stuff and when I eventually figured out about the ranks ( even the smelly fed ones 🤣) I found I ranked up pretty quickly as I just needed the ranking missions , the problem with rank fast guides is that they arent meant to be fun . And you miss the fun bits in game play ??

I somewhat liked the Canopus <=> Exphiay site a few months ago.
You use a big cargo ship and run cargo missions for fed factions, with some data missions on top.
The process is quite good if you like getting interdicted by pirates and assassins - and very bad if you don't.
So it's basically hauling with a high chance of getting some fights in between.
However, I couldn't do it in one run.
I had to do something else in between, because it became boring.
Maybe that's because I wasn't that keen on having a Corvette.
I didn't even buy one, yet, just wanted the unlock to buy one if I wanted.

any suggestions highly appreciated.

  • Have several other goals to accomplish at the same time. So it feels like you are accomplishing more than just getting a Fed. Corvette. Have additional goals like getting your trade rank or combat rank to a certain level. And unlocking certain engineers and guardian items so they are available for your corvette once you get it.
  • Some activities can be applied to achieving multiple goals at the same time. This can become more efficient than working on one goal at a time. (example: trade missions that increase trade rank, federal rank, credits, and collecting eng mats all at the same time).
  • While ranking up collect the credits and engineering mats so you can easily purchase the ship and fully engineer it. Plan ahead. It saves time.
  • Look at the mission rewards. If they offer G5 engineering mats definitely take them over credits. Stock up on those mats!
  • I find it fun to constantly improve my methods. Don't just blindly follow some youtube video. Or keep repeating the same method over-and-over-and-over. Experiment and try to do things better. Keep a notebook, write stuff down, time how long it takes to do stuff, tweek your ships, try missions at different stations, whatever. It takes the grind out of the grind.
  • Don't choose grinding activities you don't enjoy. Even if its supposedly "the most efficient". The "grind" will be more enjoyable if you are having fun.

On my alt (second) account I've been building Federation rank recently. I never tried passenger missions from Ceos to Sothis and the Sirius Atmospherics tourist beacon before to gain Federation rank, so I've done some today.
It works well enough considering there is only one Federation faction. I can sometimes fill a Python with Federation missions, sometimes take 2 to 3 others for a few credits or materials from other factions.
I've tried every other method on YouTube except cargo missions which my son got bored with and gave up playing Elite.
I've even tried finding systems with 3 factions and running a lot of planet scan missions in Odyssey which are fun for a while, work well and gain you encoded materials.
Before coming out to Ceos, I was in Riedquat where there are 5 Federation factions running any missions I could find for rep+ rewards. Some were data courier. There is a good variety of missions here and the rank gain is as fast if not faster than anywhere else if I let missions lead me to a new system with new Federation factions. Is it possible you get more Federation rep before you are allied with the faction giving the missions?
Maybe not.

In any case, all of these methods of gaining rank feel as if they work just as fast as each other. So do yourself a favour and cut out the grind. Go for Riedquat or find your own systems with 3 to 5 Federation factions and run any missions that look fun and have good rep+ rewards. There are pirate assassination missions in there that will work as they can have 5 rep and don't take long to complete. Don't forget to look out for those one way transport a passenger missions that sometimes have 3 to 5 rep.

Play the game, don't grind it. Do what's fun for the rep and don't stress about trying to get the rank fast. It will come. The Corvette is good for conflict zone combat and tough assassination missions and something else does everything else better. It's not worth growing to hate the game to get it.

Find a system with as many fed factions as possible...4 or more is good.
Get allied with em spam their missions
Any other way is a grind. Like the data one etc.
Make alot of credits too along the way. And you'll find your niche mission choices. Ones your good at and can turn in quickly.

One of the effective ways is the rescue mission. Get an Anaconda with light emission engine and saves the citizen in trouble

As @aRJay says, that is not a great suggestion for rank missions. I would go further than that but I might get an infraction for using naughty words. ;)
To be fair it isn’t a bad location for rank missions as there are more providers than you can shake a stick at. It just isn’t good if you want to flat out grind due to having to go back to Sol merely playing the game instead.

Yes, yes. I thought someone would bring up the permit lock. But be honest, the permit comes relatively early, Sol has many factions and is a beautiful hand-made system with lots of cool places to visit. So my opinion was to recommend this system to the OP because the request was for the most fun way to gain fed rank. “most” is certainly a matter of opinion, but I remember going to Sol for the first time and I immediately wanted to get allied with all the factions, just because I thought it would be cool. After about 6 years playing this game I still periodically tour Sol and do some missions there, because it’s home. So that’s my reasoning. YMMV

The issue is that (to the best of my knowledge) that missions aren’t offered to systems that have a permit lock even if you have access to the system. The OP also specified grind.

I agree that Sol is a fun system to do stuff in and I did a lot of donation missions there when I was pushing to gain rank. When I get back to the bubble I must visit Sol again to see the sights now I have better graphics I won’t be doing any missions there as I almost never do them except for rank or access and I have enough of both.
