What do you do in Elite, after you earned enough for a ship you're happy with?

For me, I'll probably deck out a Cobra for long distance travel and call it a day as far as ships go...

What do I do then?

Is there any content besides economic stuff for merchant souls - hauling missions, cargo running and war zones for earning bounties...?

If you fly, say to near the center of the galaxy, is there actually a black hole you could check out?
Any armada of aliens? some AI singularity ruling a cluster of stars?

Well, we dont know for sure what the final release of the game will hold...

But if nothing else, you could explore 400 billion star systems, even though they all just look the same at the moment.

Buy another ship (and another, and another...) and outfit it to do something different. Switch back and forth any time you get a little bored.

Do what you like.

- Search for your retirement planet and pimp it, by hauling all the stuff they need there.
- Go to the station that gave you a hard time and intercept all incoming traffic until they starve
- Search for aliens and either become their friend or eat them
- Go searching for Black Holes
- create a community event "Race around the Galaxy"
- Help newbies
- kill newbies, so your name becomes known for everyone
- wage a personal war against the Empire, because you want to become Emperor instead of the Emperor.
- go after miners for two hours and when they are done, intercept them and steal their cargo
- Go PvP... never gets old
- Get the highest bounty in the game and announce your whereabouts to the forum. The fun will come to you.
- Get tons of Gold and play "Gold or Grave" with newbie sidewinders. Ask a question, give them a minute to answer. If they do, drop a ton of Gold. If they don't, kill them.
- Get Sidewinders and blow yourself up in front of docking Lakons.
- Create a radio station and broadcast music to random players via voice comm
- Get a cargo full of Biowaste, park in front of a space station, and when someone docks, shout "FATAL FECIES" and jettison all cargo.
- Create a passenger line and sell them as slaves to the empire.
- Intercept people and talk flim-flam to them, keeping a long list of people you have abused. Post it on the forum.

The possibilities are endless.

- Get the biggest ship there is, with the biggest shields. Park in the entrance of a space station, completely blocking it. Use the 5 minute timer to preach your religious or ideological beliefs to the leaving people.
- Get a few friends. Search for a system that is populated, Anarchy, and easily reachable. Declare that system to be yours. Announce it on the forum and on reddit. Make clear that there is a passing tarriff of 10.000 Cr. Enforce the tarriff.
- Build 3 dimensional space sculptures made out of Betrandite. Avoid making them look like a genital.
- Spread rumors about endless riches in far away systems. Wait for people to arrive. Have them enjoy one of your 3 dimensional biowaste sculptures that looks like a genital
- destroy a space station
- smuggle booze and drugs into religious systems
- create a space ballett with some friends. Make sure that it works to the sound of "Never gonna give you up".
- invent a sport where you throw a cannister of performance enhancers against a space ship. The space ship has to bump into the canister, then pick it up as far away as possible from the bumping point. Call it "Space Ball".
- Write a guidance novel about the burnt out pilot
- Write another guidance novel about "99 wicked things to do with biowaste containers".

All the replies so far are excellent. A key feature of the Elite games was that there is not exactly an in-game end game. I've been playing FFE (and Frontier before that) for a good decade or so. I've never been 'Elite' rating though, so that is going to be one of my aims in ED, which should give me something to aim for for the next six months/years it takes me to reach that status.

Seriously, you have more years you could invest in a game of Elite than is probably healthy, don't worry about an end goal because you will probably grow old, have kids, and die before you finish everything you could do in the game (in relation to setting your own goals, rather than the game setting them for you and giving you a 'You Are Winner!' sign when you 'finish' the game).

You could be happy with a ship for many reasons. Maybe enhancing it to the max was your final goal, but ships are not enhanced for the sole glory of it, after all.
If you rig a ship for long distance travel and call it a day, then you probably forgot the most important part: to actually travel :p

Bring us back some nice pictures of those uncharted systems, commander ;)

The systems aren't the stuff that should be interesting. If you want to look at different star types then you can do that easily here : http://www.planetseed.com/files/fla...n/byostar.htm?width=805&height=550&popup=true

Just one star creator of many I think.

What needs to be interesting is what we find IN the systems, not just the systems themselves.

Cool, thanks for the great variety of suggestions!

I don't really go much for ranks or fame or 'achievements', but I could really dig flying to the center of the Galaxy if they actually put something - I don't mean a station I can trade with, but a black hole I can fall into or some other distortion. Maybe the center of the Galaxy actually has a band of giant aliens playing music day and night, with the most amazing disco lighting ever. Stars crashing into each other behind the stage and stuff ^^

I could go for some group campaign to help the Eranian people, that might be fun.

Is that the same Mostly Harmless from EVE?

I get that about no totally pre-fab end game.

But its always a double edged blade, between just turning 'no content available' into a virtue (like EVE at the start, they had no money to make anything more)
And a total lack of missions that are somehow connected and tell a story. Like probably a lot of people, I came to sci-fi games from sci-fi books, and so I like to find a good story somewhere in there, not to consider the end of the story the end of the game, all I'd need would be a hint for additional chapters to be forthcoming one day. If SWtoR got one thing right, it was the story telling, but I think the guy who was mainly behind that was let go after the troubles with people leaving a few month after release.

True, players can make their own stories. But I can't say I liked the stories that got created in EVE. Just didn't grab me, except for finally kicking BoB out of Delve, after that developer scandal making themselves extra T2 ammo BPOs. That was the only war I found exciting to be in, even if - as usual in EVE - we were spending whole nights just camping places, with the FC reading a freaking book over Vent so we wouldn't all fall asleep from boredom.

Not the same really, just spawned from the Elite Dangerous sub reddit and consequently took on that name (as groups in other games have done like the planet side 2 or star citizen Test groups). The name was actually decided by vote.
Some people that played in Eve TEST also play in TEST:Mostly Harmless but that's all. I personally never played EVE for example.
So don't let the EVE link put you off, 5 mins on our site will show you that we're a good bunch of guys and galls ;)

what's HHGTG...?

And was the Mostly Harmless Alliance in EVE also from HHGTG then or not?

Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

It's EVE TEST and TEST:Mostly Harmless. TEST:Mostly harmless is a group of E: D players that originally spawned from the E: D subreddit. I don't believe there was a EVE mostly harmless but I didn't play it so I dunno really.

Just bough a Cobra ...
After lots of bulletin board missions mostly carrying goods.
Best so far was 20T gold for over a 160,000c :) to Kelly City
but that was after I bought the cobra (upgraded cargo hold)
Just keep looking for multi missions to the same system or better still stations.

Getting to a ship I am happy with is my first goal (along with financial independence), something to be achieved as quickly as possible, because only then does the game really start for me.

I wage war against my enemies, assist my allies in achieving their goals, and roam around the galaxy seeing what it has to offer.
