It is for scanning the new Odyssey biologicals. Remember, Odyssey is a completely different game, created by people who know the square root of eff all about Elite Dangerous and who then performed a coup d'etat and bolted their legs-game onto the real game and just could not give a "throw" about all the resultant discrepancies and incongruities, etc.

It's for doing exobiology. There are a lot (a huge lot) of biologicals you can use it on. But not barnacles.

Barnacles, like the Thargoid ships and "structures" are probably biomechanical rather than flora and fauna that the Vista Genomics wants to collect.

It will also scan the old ones from Horizons on the old or new planets, but you don't get much for those, but only the bio, barnacles are probably bio-mechanical, but they are thargoid structures so don't count.

Those are old Horizons brain trees. The new Odyssey biologicals only appear on atmospheric worlds.

Sorry, I really wasn't trying to be a wet blanket! Those were some of the first things I ever found when I went out to the Guardian sites. But some of the Odyssey biologicals are really exotic and interesting, so I hope you do come across some of them.
Just to add - I recommend Elite Observatory as an add-on tool when gardening. At the very least, it let's you know when you've travelled far enough to achieve diversity for your samples.
