Autumn DLC Speculation

Zoo Atlanta had bush dogs until a few years ago. They were part of a complex of mostly unusual small carnivores, including a binturong, a clouded leopard, the only fossa I’ve ever seen, as well as the tanukis I so fell in love with which are unfortunately also no longer there (now only Oklahoma City has raccoon dogs in the US, to my knowledge).

The bush dog enclosure was full circle with a bunch of viewing windows at different levels around the perimeter, each giving a very different view through the foliage, which worked well with how they were inclined to just patrol their entire habitat. After they lost their bush dogs (not sure if they were just transferred out or all died but I assume the latter), they replaced them with maras. And like, I like maras and all, but they’re a very sedentary species. I don’t know if I’ve ever actually seen one moving in real life. So the habitat setup that worked so well for the bush dogs just feels wasted on them. Similarly, they replaced the tanukis with tortoises of all things. I don’t even recal which species, just that it’s a smallish tortoise. These new species really don’t hold a candle to the rare weird canines the zoo lost.

Anyway uh yeah bush dogs are amazing

It's a bit of an unfortunate pattern I've noticed. A lot of more niche species seem to be phasing out of aza zoos.

Bushdogs are quite nice...although they wouldn't be really my favourite animals.

But...if we get them, I wouldn't say no 🙈🙈(like I would do it with most of the animals they will hopefully release with the next DLC)

Top 5 waterfowl anyone?

1. Black swan
2. Muscovy duck
3. Mandarin duck
4. Bar-headed goose
5. Any pelican
Pelicans aren't waterfowl (only anseriformes technically count) but I'll assume you mean 'water birds' in general.

In which case:
  1. Great white pelican (any other would be a second place achievement for me, I want the Big Guy).
  2. Mute swan (I mostly build in Britain, so I'd love to fill my lakes and ponds with the royal birds).
  3. Mallard (ideally I'd like these to be ambient visitors that flew down out of nowhere to hang around on water, but since that's not really possible without massively hurting performance I'd take them as a habitat animal).
  4. Cape Barren or Magpie goose (either one is fine for me).
  5. Grey crowned crane.

Gonna follow NZFanatic's idea of just any type of waterbird (plus seabird), although I'm also going to only include species that would require additional swimming/diving behaviours (otherwise, I'd have the Shoebill and Great Blue Heron on the list too).

1. Australian Pelican (I'd take Great White tho)
2. Atlantic Puffin
3. Mute Swan
4. Black Swan
5. Mandarin Duck

Atlantic Puffin
That's always such a tricky one for me, because realistically puffins absolutely require an aviary to be contained, but in game-terms I feel like I'd be willing to overlook it considering how the majority of their behaviour would be spent swimming and sitting on rocks...

It's a bit like ibises. Like, yeah, they are waders, but modern standards require an aviary because wing-clipping isn't seen as good practice anymore, so you could get away with making them "ground birds" (in the same way as flamingos or peafowl) but really they should be part of an aviary system.

I'd feel a lot better about both if we had a dedicated mesh building set.

I'm still hoping the release day is the 4th October, I'm so ready for this DLC. Whenever I have a few minutes at work I keep checking if anything new has popped up haha. This week is going to be interesting.
I always get the motivation to play when it gets close to DLC time. I like to have a zoo started so I can use the new animals right away, so long as they fit.

Of course, I always get stuck with the damn entrance building. Why are entrances so hard to be creative with?

Same, I always try to build an entrance before new DLC then use that map as a testing ground for said DLC. Alot of times I just got stuck and did not finish it, so what I am doing lately is that I made a blueprint for a really hollow basic entrance building and gift shop (walls and roofs) that I use and then just decorate it differently with details for each zoo. So most of my zoos have a variation of the same entrance. Not the most original, but it saves me alot of headache.

As for the ongoing discussions regarding species:

For an additional penguin species I would really like Little Blue Penguin. It is true it is not held in any EU zoos, but it is the most unique one because of its totally different colour palette with its feathers. Also, any additional Oceanian representative is a plus imo.

I got to say I am more of a dog person myself, I would really love Maned Wolf and Racoon Dog. Bush Dog would be also neat as well as additional foxes, mainly would love to see Bat-Eared Fox and Red Fox.

Small cats would also be nice though, I would love to see at least:
1) Smaller African cat - Serval/Caracal.
2) Smaller SA cat - Ocelot.
3) Smaller Asian Cat - Fishing Cat or (as much as I find them utterly ugly af) a Pallas Cat.

I love just about every animal they offer to include. There are very good proposals.

I especially have a weakness for ruminants, ungulates, horses...

For this reason, I don't feel comfortable having only the zebra and the Przewalski horse as equids.

I would love to be able to include the African Wild Donkey or the Onager as they are very unique, not everyone knows them, they are quite beautiful and their inclusion brings more variety to this beloved group.

I like many of the animal proposals that everyone makes and I would be delighted if they were added as well.
Each of us has preferences for different groups of animals, and that's great, because it makes the content we want to receive more varied and rich.

This is my contribution for the 200 pages.

Let's go!!

I would honestly love grevys zebra... They are very very different from other species of zebra

I would also like to see Bushdogs in the game. In Germany, Cologne there are plans to relaunch the Zoo of Cologne, which means it will become a Geo-Zoo, with it's own South America section and they plan to keep Bushdogs together with Spectacled Bears. I would like to see such an interspecies bonus in Planet Zoo, as much as exhibits shared by Spectacled Bears and Coatis, which is also a very common combination.

I'm with the idea of small cats. I'd go with the Sand Cat myself.

As it stands, I think my cat(like) power rankings would go as follows:
  1. Fishing cat
  2. (Genet and then fossa go here)
  3. Ocelot
  4. Sand cat
  5. Serval
  6. Caracal
  7. Pallas cat
  8. Black-footed cat
  9. Bobcat
  10. Canadian lynx
The last two are real fringe choices, but I think that’s the extent of the cats I’d actively be looking forward to in the game.
We need all those plus the Golden Cat. To make small mammal house.
