Help/advice on collecting and understanding the biological/geological landing spots

hi fellow commanders, i have been on a few long trips now with landings on multiple bodies, but im clearly missing something or am i? i have also looked at various posts previously and i see bits and bobs of stuff and the community has really helped me understand a lot in this game but see when i scan a body and its says for example -geological(40) , i get there and the "40" is split into different landing sites like (5) , (20) bla bla. so ok, pick the 20 one, but when i land i only find either one or 2 geological examples not 20, same with the biological bodies. The one im on the now said 4 at the landing site here but have only scanned bark mounds. What am i not reading/understanding about the body data/body markers?

Also im console switch over and i purchased odyssey as well but im currently in horizons getting used to all my systems, craft, and gameplay again before jumping into odyssey as by reading various posts this makes a difference somewhow?

thanks folks,

in horizon the pois are simply ordered by number, so geo (20) is simply point number 20 - with no reference to the number of e.g. fumaroles you'll see there.

ok cheers for that :)

Yeah the numbers in Odyssey refer to the number of different "types" of geo, the numbers in Horizons refer to the number of "locations" of geo, the problem of course is that without visiting every single site in Horizons you can never know for sure if you have found every type of geo on the planet, whereas in Odyssey of course once you have the stated number that's it! It's a major change that confuses a lot of player coming from Horizons to Odyssey.

irrc there can only be 3 different geo types (e.g. fumarole, vent and icefumarole) per planet on horizon.

Yes 3 different "types", but more than 1 source, as for instance both carbon dioxide and methane geysers could exist on the same planet depending where on the planet and what the conditions were in that particular area, from our early explorations during the searches before there were even POI's I am sure we found a few like that.

thanks everyone, makes more sense now, appreciate the help. although im gathering im best leaving horizons and jumping to odyssey, il boot that up when im back to the bubble, is that side of things an improvement then with odyssey? is there a lot of changes?

I switched to Odyssey a couple of weeks ago or so, shortly after FD upgraded Horizons to 3.8 (and had that sale on Ody).
"Improvement" - that's a point of view thingy. You don't get VR on foot (although the injected flat screen works reasonably well), and I am one of the presumably few who prefer the new lighting system (apart from the shadows...). As for bio/geo, I'll still have to find out - but there are a few people over in newcomers who post very nice screenshots of their findings.
One thing I did find out already: you're going to have to buy at least one new suit. Yes, you can use your flight suit to walk around on the outside (or inside of a station, for that matter) - but basically any of the other three types of suit is better for that. The three suits are:
  • Artemis (genetic sampler)
  • Maverick (plasma cutter)
  • Dominator (second primary weapon)
The suits come in different grades (1-5) and can be upgraded, although you can buy grades 1-3 directly from the supply store in all stations with a concourse. Grade 1 is always available, grade 2 and 3 are rarer to find and apparently only get restocked on Thursdays. If you're lucky, you'll find a piece of kit that's not only upgraded but also has a random(?) Engineer mod already installed - I found (and am currently wearing) a grade 2 Artemis with improved damage resistance.
What you want for exploration is an Artemis suit, as that's the only one that lets you collect info you can later sell at Vista Genomics. The Maverick is supposedly sturdier, and that plasma cutter lets you open up otherwise locked places (useful for scavenging), the Dominator is for combat.
I haven't yet gotten around to actually visit one of the new planets and have a look at the flora - first, I want to collect a good handful of mostly data mats to finalize engineering my exploration ship.

thanks for this bro. man, sounds like there's gona be more learning curves to come then.... im really an explorer at heart along with passenger transits other than combat, so my gear will be more weighed to that side, i am partial to planetary data jobs/scans so il need to see what the equivalent is for that in odyssey in terms of gear

depending on where you are - i bought an artemis suit from a DSSA carrier on the north-eastern side of the galaxy, instead of buckyballing back to sol or colonia.
not all DSSA cariers have that service, but some have.
i still only run odyssey if i find an interesting tennous atmospheric planet i want to land, or want to go bio-sampling.

As Ashnak said, improvement is subjective. For me it's been a huge improvement, and like you I really enjoy exploring.

With the new exobiology stuff and landable planets with thin atmospheres, you really get into the feel of exploration -- finding a new system, checking out the various planets, discovering some with biology on it, swooping down to travel low and slow over the landscape to find the plant(s), landing, getting into the SRV to scan the plants with the Composition scanner, then disembarking on-foot to scan them with the hand-scanner and collect sample data, which can then be sold, etc.

It's very satisfying, and the view are amazing. My screenshot folder is overflowing.
