Skirt biome hopes and ideas

Hey! The new biome skirts that will be added in the 1.11 update will only be available to specific maps. You won't be able to swap biome skirts to different maps. Hope this clears things up!
That's a bit disappointing. Was it for technical reasons or a creative decision? If it's for technical reasons I can live with that, but if it's not I would really heavily suggest the dev team uncap that restriction and let us use any background for any map.

oh that's little bit disapoointing, is that mean not every biome would have biome skirt? also can I ask what the biome skirts are like ocean? city? forest? I would like to know what to expect!

Wouldn't say a skirt created for a desert biome look a bit weird with a temperate map for example. I assume each skirt has been tailored to match terrain paints and design choice so I can't see how they are interchangeable

That's not really the point.

Like I said, if it's for a technical reason and they can't do it, ok. But the devs should not be restricting player choice for something like that just because they might think it "looks a bit weird".

In a game that allows dragon shaped mountains and floating islands I don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to switch backgrounds.

I wouldn’t say that they would necessarily look weird - as I have said in other threads, I’d love a temperate map with a taiga or tundra mountain background. I would use a temperate map with a grassland background perhaps for a zoo in Australia or California.

In real life the curated and cultivated environment of a zoo isn’t necessarily a continuation of the surrounding - or distant - environment.

Ultimately we should make our own decisions about what does or doesn’t look weird.

What would solve this is the ability to select any terrain ‘paint’ in any biome, I think. To be able to put the tropical soil or the taiga short grass in my temperate zoo would be game changing!!!

It really would! Along with manual temperature control. I’d still like a neutral, low lying horizon background, hopefully something we will get in the new update.

Honestly, I’m still hesitantly excited to see how these turn out.

I did suspect we may see a limited amount per biome, which may seem stifling for those that were looking for options, but personally I’m just hoping it removes the disconnect the map has from the rest of the world in that zone just outside of the editable area but before the backdrops/skybox.

Hoping it improves or removes the need of car parks etc so our focus can be on the actual zoo element, but the current default remaining an option for those that enjoy doing so.

Fingers crossed I haven’t paused working on a new franchise till the 18th for nothing.. but that’s my gamble to take I guess!

I was hugely excited about this. Following the confirmation that they will be significantly less transformational than I first thought I’m still keeping an open mind but definitely managing my expectations.

A little surprised they didn’t have a screenshot of one to share to illustrate their impact. Biome skirt isn’t exactly the easiest term to communicate without a visual I don’t think, judging by some of the responses.

We’re a community filled with creatives and those who want the best version of this game, so it’s not hard to think we’d run away with concepts without set expectations! Though maybe they just weren’t ready to share at the time of announcement, who knows.. time will reveal all!

I've been trying to find it, but I may be overlooking the answer. Are we going to be able to change the skirts on existing zoos or only on new ones?

I think it was confirmed, only new.

EDIT: actually this is confusing, does it mean if you do a new save of an old zoo @Tim Smith ?

I'm pretty sure during the special livestream on Thursday, they mentioned this will only be for new zoos, not existing ones. I don't know how that works with save files but I would assume that means only new zoos starting on the 18th, when you have the update.

I'm assume it would work like the Height Mapping tool that when u click for example on sandbox and then u chhose the biome and continent and then u could choose what skirt u want in the menu with how difficult mode u want and if u want height map and the name of the zoo I'm think that's how it would work and because this can't be in existing ones. like the height map if u didn't did that when u start the zoo u can't add it after.
